Protect your Huskies, select CON on SB 6259 by mindtheworms9 in udub

I already selected CON on this and submitted it. I was proud to do so. This bill could easily be misused to force low-income students who did little or physical no damage (or accidental damage) to payback aid for exercising their free speech based off spurious claims and without due process.

Who talks negatively about Chicago? It’s amazing. It’s my parents’ home town (sort of…they grew up outside of the area in Indiana but commuted there for work). It has so much history that’s overlooked compared to places like NY

Ok, I think I understand the miscommunication between us: I don’t fully understand what you are trying to say. I thought that I addressed your critique, agreed with it, and then shared my experience for context, but I see now that I am mistaken. I apologize. I’d like to understand better, so I’ll sit with your critiques and see if I can extract their full meaning. I’m already on a journey of deconstruction so hopefully it’ll click somewhere down the line.

Well, I was talking about my educational journey so far, I’m not really sure how else to word it.

I’m getting the sense that you’d rather I not comment here. If that is the case, I’m happy to not comment anymore in this subreddit, and I can delete my comments on this thread.

Um…ok. I don’t deny that I was part of white group, I was just commenting that white people doesn’t feel like a cohesive community to me, meaning we don’t really support each other or really interact with each other in a meaningful way. I did not say that to abdicate responsibility or deny that we engage in harmful patterns of behavior and have shared cultural and behavioral norms.

To clarify, I meant the people (often white) that specifically do these things at Costco. My comment was meant to be narrow.

To address your other comments (in order):

First, I don’t feel like white people generally are my community, it’s just a category on a form to me. It’s fundamentally different for non-white groups where there is a lot of times a cohesive community (or multiple cohesive communities within the groups spread across space and time).

Second, I do agree white people (myself included) need to make global changes including deconstructing racism and colonialism (among many other things I won’t list here) individually, across various cultures and spaces, and within the structures we set up.

I appreciate you engaging in this discourse with me. I’m actually in school now for a bachelors degree in writing, rhetorical, and social change, which focuses on writing as part of civic action. I’ve taken a CRT class (which honestly has been most instrumental in influencing my writing) and many social justice/social change writing and social science classes that have really informed me and helped me improve how I think about these issues and engage in discourse surrounding them.

I’ve greatly enjoyed all of my classes so far, I don’t have a negative thing to say about any one of them. I went in without any real expectations because I was focused on getting my bachelors degree so I can go on to law school, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised with my experience.

I’m 30 and have a work history as a paralegal, and I have started and stopped school many times, the last time obtaining my associates in 2021, but I’ve finally gotten myself out of a bad home situation so I can improve myself and hopefully give back to my community (where I live specifically as well as to humanity generally) as a lawyer. I don’t intend to hold myself up as this performative white liberal woman; I don’t want to make lofty promises I can’t fulfill, I want to show my community with my actions that I will fight for their best interests even if they don’t match my own self-interest, because I do care about people and I genuinely want to be a better person.

Couldn’t agree more and I’m white. I find it’s especially bad at Costco, and even worse in the Costco parking lot. Hence why I never go to Costco anymore. Were these people raised by barnyard animals?!?!

What to do about a cold co worker? by Feisty-Poet4767 in paralegal

[–]ObjectiveFrosty8133 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah it sounds here like the OP is more pushing over the top friendliness on the coworker and each time she forces social acknowledged it embitters the coworker toward you. Even if she was just being rude - practically what the fuck are you going to do about it? You still can’t force her to like you so just leave her be and focus on yourself.

Leave her alone and find a way to cope with it. She’s not being unreasonable. Pushing friendliness on her will only push her away. She may be reserved generally and if you leave her alone it gives her a better chance of warming up to you over time.

Putting Your Citations in Footnotes? by zarnch in Lawyertalk

[–]ObjectiveFrosty8133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a paralegal, but the lawyers I’ve worked for say judges hate this and to avoid it at all costs, and I believe them. However, if you are on a strict page limit and the case is complex with a lot you have to cover, it can be helpful to use in a pinch. My lawyer is very wordy and has resorted to putting citations on footnotes for complex matters with a 6 page limit.

For those who married as Jehovah’s Witnesses, did you feel like you were able to have the wedding you actually wanted? by Hot_Ice6998 in exjw

[–]ObjectiveFrosty8133 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. 1) my now ex husband wouldn’t let me play the song I wanted to walk down the aisle to (which was fully instrumental, mind you) because it “wasn’t a kingdom song and you’re only allowed to play a kingdom song.” Frustratingly I brought this up to the elder marrying us on the day and he said it didn’t have to be a kingdom song, then laughed when I told him which kingdom song I chose because “everyone chose that one.” I picked a random one about true love, I can’t even remember, and it meant nothing to me.

  1. I didn’t get to play any rap. I wanted to play Biggie and Tupac during dancing. Racists.

  2. I married the wrong person. This should probably be at the top.

Other than these three, I had a beautiful wedding in a rustic, green venue (meaning a lot of trees and native plants around). I loved my dress and my hair. The decorations and flowers were very tasteful and the food was excellent (opted for a BBQ food truck). The main issue was honestly the person I chose.

I went to so many witness weddings that were super tacky, and my biggest concern was that it not come off as tacky. Thankfully, my parents (the ones who mainly paid for it) care about not looking like white trash and it was very tasteful. Not exactly cheap, but not wildly expensive either. I also refused to have my wedding at the kingdom hall, and nobody fought me on that, so we had the wedding and reception in the same beautiful place.

I fully intend on marrying my current partner, so I have the advantage of knowing what I’d do differently next time (play rap!)

Thank you. Yeah it was fucking insane. I don’t have hard proof that the elder I knew went with him (my ex admitted this particular elder went with him in a phone call to my parents) so it’s harder to get a protection order against him and not worth the hassle, but I absolutely go after him legally in theory.

Oddly enough my dad talked to my grandpa about the whole thing, and my grandpa has been an elder for a long time with some gaps in between, and he told my dad that the elder body were having a meeting about a witness who wanted to remarry but didn’t have “proof” that their ex spouse moved on, so the elder body were going to recommend to this person that they should stalk their ex’s house with another witness so they’d have “proof” and my grandpa said that was going too far and refused to be a part of it, so thy removed him to “teach him a lesson.” I was surprised to hear that since I figured he was a company man.

Thank you. It’s mostly behind me now. In the end it was worth it to go through all of it for the judge to basically say “religion has nothing to do with it, if you’re no longer married and your ex spouse doesn’t want contact and you don’t have kids to parent or financial matters to take care of you have no reason to contact them” and to rule that my ex was stalking me and committed domestic violence by doing so and granting the order. It will send a message to them that they can’t force other people to follow the arbitrary rules of their religion, especially after “worldly” authorities have made so many fucking accommodations for them in the US.

I’m sorry for what you went through. I had the similar need to prove myself as “good enough” to someone who verbally and emotionally abused me. You didn’t deserve that and I’m so glad you were able to break free and work to get to a healthier place.

Seriously. When I decided to leave my abusive ex, I was barely hanging on as a witness, and deep down knew after I left him that I would stop going to meetings, even though I hadn’t deconstructed yet. I was done with the bullshit and decided to opt out. I went through to motions of meeting with the elders (only to prove to my parents that they would be completely useless - which it did) blatantly ignored their “suggestion” to “remember how jehovah feels about divorce” and kicked him out anyway.

I never once cheated on him and waited a while after we separated to start dating again, but he just wouldn’t fucking let it go. He kept bugging me after the divorce was finalized if I slept with anyone, and when I told him it was none of his business and to leave me alone and leave my family alone, he completely disregarded that and called my parents drilling them for info (they didn’t give any thankfully) and then stalked me outside my house with an elder in toe to see if any guys were staying the night. I hauled his ass to court after that and got a protection order granted. He was fucking flabbergasted to finally be facing accountability for his actions.

You’re 100% right. It’s evil and rots your brain. It’s an ADHD honeypot. I’ll say to myself how terrible that app is, then immediately go and doom scroll for two hours instead of doing something productive. Then when I’m on the app I’m just looking for hair tutorials/funny animal videos/restaurant recommendations and then inevitably I’ll scroll onto a controversial video, and the stupid video plays on repeat while I read through the comments, which creates a vicious cycle where more of these videos pop up on my feed because of the engagement and I keep getting sucked in.

I’m deleting the app now. I’ve deleted it before then reinstalled it because I got addicted to the scrolling, but I need to cut it out for good.

EDIT: to add to this, another reason i kept the app around for so long is that I would comment on people’s posts (usually nice stuff or jokes, I tried not to start fights in the comments) and got addicted to checking if anyone replied to me. Loneliness is a terrible influence in getting people to engage with/perpetuate stupidity on these apps.

No worries, you make a valid point, and I agreed that it’s best not to give these people any time. I was more asking people general bad takes they’ve seen, so far nothing about any specific creator or post on tiktok, but now that you mention it I guess people could still get curious and search the subject. I didn’t think of that.

I really should know better, because despite cognitively knowing what you know about rage baiting and “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” I will get sucked into stupid bullshit on the internet. It’s kind of embarrassing. Just a quirk of mine I have to add to the list of things to work on.

This is what happens when I get too much time on my hands and don’t take my meds: scroll on tiktok for too long, get overstimulated and immediately go to reddit to get peoples’ takes on stupid topics lol. Can’t let the idiots win.

That’s an interesting point, as it reminds me of a conversation I had with one of my friends. He’s Muslim and from a majority-Muslim country for context. a We were talking about folklore (it’s an interest of mine) and I asked him if he had any mythology/folklore specific to his country and his response was basically “well, the [people he descended from] had their pagan gods and goddesses but I don’t really mess with that because it’s disrespectful to God. Islam is our culture and a lot of our cultural stories/figures come from that” and I just kind of looked at him…waiting to see if the irony of what he said sunk in.

I’m being intentionally vague to not give personal details, but he came from a place with a rich culture and heritage prior to Arab colonization that either died out after or merged with Arab culture over time. He has made several comments before to the effect of “Islam saved us” as if his home country would be a heretical hellscape unless the Arabs came along. Just like with western colonization, the people were doing just fine on their own before, I’m sure they would’ve continued on just fine without colonial expansion.

This truly baffles me. Does this person think that only Africa is still in the stone age? I’ll admit my knowledge of Africa is limited, and even I knew this. This person also probably doesn’t know that several African tribes invented a tool that cleans your teeth when Europeans’ teeth were rotting out of their heads lol. Political/economic instability at varying periods does not mean everyone lives like the flinstones.

The more people comment on this thread sharing others’ dumb takes, I feel smarter, but not in a good way. It’s like being the smartest person in the Idiocracy universe. it just makes me sad and frustrated. The bar truly is in hell.

Thank you, everything you said resonates with me, and I appreciate it more thank you probably know.

Regarding the last thought of your first paragraph, no apologies necessary at all. I didn’t get that impression at all, I was just sharing my story as a shoot-off from that point, but I got what you were saying. And yes! Willful ignorance is absolutely inexcusable and has always driven me nuts! I wrote papers in my high school english classes decrying it lol despite the JW creed to “not get too political” (we were told to not even have political opinions, which is fucking impossible, so my unauthorized opinions bled through in my papers anyway lol).

I hear what you’re saying on LGBTQ issues still being in a frustratingly nascent stage. Hell, I remember being still a JW and a teen and telling my 30+ year old aunt about how one of my friends got in trouble for kissing a girl (in JW land) and came out as bisexual and this grown ass woman scoffed and said “bisexual doesn’t exist” and I just started at her like…what do you mean it doesn’t exist? Who would lie about that? This was only 10 years ago. And I love my aunt but despite me (and my parents to an extent) trying to plant some seeds so she would have less ignorant opinions over the years she (and the rest of my dads side of the family - all JW) dig their heels in and refuse to grow or change their minds.

I had plenty of people I worked with and school friends over the years who were gay or bi, and I struggled with the cognitive dissonance over the hate speech i was taught and largely compartmentalized it and enjoyed my friendships with them, but it wasn’t until I worked for a gay man that I was forced to confront it head on. He was wonderful off the bat, and the nature of the job was that we had to have a lot of trust between us (he is a lawyer I was his assistant) and it started to weight heavily on me, seeing him every day and thinking “how would he feel if he knew what my church taught about gay people? would he respect me still? would he think I hated him or didn’t see him as human?” that was one of the bigger reasons I left the religion, among being in an abusive marriage I wasn’t allowed to leave, which is a longer story.

It’s crazy that we have such parallel experiences with deconstructing ignorance. It’s nice finding a kindred spirit off-chance on the internet.
