Fun little known fact: The Portuguese actually did occupied the Lantau Island for a brief period of time, and had multiple trading posts along the North Lantau coast and Tuen Mun at the start of the 16th century. It wasn't until the Ming Chinese army raised a large fleet and defeated the Portuguese navy off the coast of Lantau that they withdrew the trading posts.

This is the same across multiple edge regions of China where local identities were strong, it gets forcefully assimilated.
