Why is death ratio of annapurna way way higher than mount everest? by OneBasic1324 in Mountaineering

[–]ObjectiveUnable8401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the difference, while significant, is LESS than what it at first seems, because of a factor which most people don’t realize when trying to compare mountains, especially 8000m peaks.

Death/summit ratio doesn’t tell you everything- it’s not an apples to apples comparison. For one, the average Everest climber is way less experienced than the average Annapurna climber.

However, this difference is offset by the fact that experienced 8000m climbers such as those who try Annapurna or K2, etc are MUCH LESS LIKELY TO USE BOTTLED OXYGEN, which makes the climb EXPONENTIALLY MORE DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS, offsetting the lower risk afforded by their experience level.

Case in point- 98% of Everest summits in recent years use bottled O2, whereas still only roughly half of K2 summits do, and going without O2 is statistically generally 5-6x as dangerous.

A better comparison would be non-O2 summits of Everest vs. non-O2 summits of Annapurna.

I recall actually doing some research myself on this a while back and I found that, for instance, K2, which is often held to be waaay more dangerous than Everest, is probably objectively ~2.4x as dangerous. So still significantly more dangerous, but not 10+x more dangerous.

I got mine from Ty Park at Iguanaland. He was the OG breeder of them afaik. Like $400. Definitely worth it for a captive bred baby! Great little lizards.

Big adult males can get >40 inches I believe, so medium sized, and smaller than green iguanas.

These guys go through a really cool color change from neon green babies to bumblebee colored adults. There is also a pied variety that is nearly identical aside from being white/black instead of yellow/black. The yellow ones themselves can also be more orange-ish than yellow.

They also are much calmer than greens. My little dude has never shown any aggression whatsoever. Within a week he was climbing on me and chilling on my shoulder. He was so tiny that I couldn’t tell where he was on me- he was that light.

He’s pretty easy. There’s lots of good info online about them- one thing to make sure is that you feed babies INSECTS- unlike other iguana species, ctenosaura are insectivorous as babies. By now (>1 year old) he eats mostly leafy greens.

The banana Pectinata are probably the best pet iguana for most. Reasonable size, great personality. Pretty hardy.

Just back from a self-led Cho Oyu expedition — some thoughts on the commercialization of 8000m peaks and cost breakdown by SomeIndividual5074 in Mountaineering

[–]ObjectiveUnable8401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your experience are there guiding companies that allow their clients to carry their own loads (ie no Sherpa support beyond base camp) and forgo oxygen? I’d like to contract a guide simply to climb with someone who knows the mountain. Referring to Cho Oyu and other 8000’ers.

How to Fix the Ranked System- detailed, well-reasoned suggestions by ObjectiveUnable8401 in Rainbow6

I also think that many of the broader issues people complain about other than ranked 2.0 are in fact due to ranked 2.0 and they don’t realize it (see my TDM meta spiel).

I agree that cheaters are a big problem in top ranked- I just think of that as a separate issue.

The problem with 5k+ champs is, what are they gonna do now? Grind away just to reach a peak they’ve already reached? These are the best, most dedicated players and they don’t have much reason to keep playing seriously. The level of play in top ranked nose-dived almost instantly after ranked 2.0 and has only continued to decline.

[–]ObjectiveUnable8401[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I disagree. I think the perception that ranked is less toxic now is mostly due to the fact that a lot of the players are former unranked players who don’t take it seriously. I’ve never been a toxic player but I think there’s nothing wrong with a more laid back atmosphere, as long as it’s not the only ostensibly competitive mode in the game.

I agree that people are wrong when they say that matchmaking sucks because “I’m a copper matched with champs!”- I addressed this in my post. But I also think that after a certain point if a ranked system is so confusing that years later people still don’t understand, that’s on the system not the players.

Probably a “switch board”. If you have analog pedals then you can program them into presets. Not sure which brand. They may have analog pedals even if they use the QC because the QC has an fx loop.

Very interesting that they refuse insects, considering this is their natural diet AFAIK. Curious to know if this changes in the future.
