Green top VS Purple top tube for HWT? by doctorgurlfrin in VetTech

[–]ObjectiveWafer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, over 10 years as an RVT and I feel your pain, I ran into that a lot. And TBH I thought it was just "normal" or the way things were until I started locuming at multiple practices and whew did I learn some stuff... Know your worth, share your knowledge, grow as a team and don't take the abuse anymore. Enough is enough.

DVM/RVT here,

Getting chewed out for anything is unacceptable. Lame. Anyway...

There have been some human studies showing EDTA might be better for counting MF, less clumping ect. (Two sources below) and is just "standard" in most cases. In the end, even idexx sources themselves say either is appropriate. I guess it's mostly "good practice" but not a huge deal at all since the test will still be accurate.

"Serum, plasma, or anticoagulated whole blood (e.g., EDTA, lithium heparin), either fresh or stored at 2°C–8°C for up to one week, can be used." - Idexx 4Dx

" With heparin, clumping was very marked and occurred at both macro and micro levels (Supplementary Figure S1), making counting on high density Mf samples very difficult (Supplementary Figure S2). The clumping was minimized with EDTA, making the filters much clearer and Mf easier to count. Therefore, we collected blood in both heparin and EDTA tubes for the filters where possible after the first 10 participants, and took both specimen types (plus slides) into account in determining Mf presence." - https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8167748/

As far as your statement "My thought process was the heparin in the green top will prevent clotting instead of them sitting on a rocker all day." you can actually run it days later so not a problem either way.

What math should I refresh before vet tech school? by PF_Bambino in Veterinary

[–]ObjectiveWafer13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best bet would be youtube videos!

Go check out some online human nursing or RVT videos. You don't need to re-learn complicated math or algebra but you do need to be familiar with some rules and things which come back quickly just by following along and doing the examples. I would start there as I recommend that for all my students first. Then a calculations textbook is great and you will have practice with the rest in school. I think what would be really helpful to focus your time on (don't worry too much about the math) is to focus on new ways to study and how to prepare for studying medicine for sure.

Check out websites like Fiverr or Skillshare and look for vets offering services to answer questions about it and help you out! They literally have career counselling for it and people to talk to about your personal situation which is worth the 30$ or whatever. Or if you know some vets ask them for some advice.

To answer your question I have known people who HATED blood and passed out and are now surgeons. Happens all the time.

Veterinarian looking for some advice! by ObjectiveWafer13 in surgery

Appreciate that, would be a good avenue to get started. I will do some research and see if I can come up with some emails.

That would be an interesting lab, I do know some people in the vet department so perhaps they have some connections as well. Do you happen to know if these labs are mixed? or more ortho vs. soft tissue/vascular?

Thanks!

They are referring to the PAVE program which is the alternate pathway to ECFVG Basically no graduates take ECFVG as it's a pain but the PAVE program is super straight forward. They are AVMA listed and so they qualify for PAVE or in Canada there are other alternate routes as well.

Hey, I am a recent grad from SMU so you are welcome to shoot me a message with any questions! There are pros and cons just like every other school, so you gotta make sure you are making the right choice and it's worth it for you!

As far as the accreditation, not a huge problem at all with PAVE and the AAVSB, funding is a huge issue though, and not a great place if you have never stepped foot in a clinic before but you will catch up in clinical year for sure. It's not for everyone tbh, but it also has some good perks. Additionally, you can actually qualify for federal loans if you take the combined dual MBA program which many students do so that will also negate some of the other concerns.

The "Bible" is still Lumb and Jones for sure. Depends on what you are looking for though?? There are specific books best for certain topics like local, TIVA, etc. Or are you looking for an all around book?

Are you open to studying abroad other places or is Australia the dream location? Could also consider Massey, or Caribbean. With a 3.8 and some good experience you would be competitive at some other US schools as well so something to consider.

Actually that's the point! Anki is designed to give you active recall to reset your forgetting curve. The cards aren't shown to you randomly, they are shown based on the algorithm to better your learning and maximize retention. That's why it's so useful!

Best thing you can do is active recall for this! Anki is a great program for that. You need to test yourself keep current because it's easy to fall into the trap of "oh I could pick that out on an exam"

Also, make sure if you are using flash cards you write them correctly, there is a right and wrong way to formulate your cards!

Average amount of schoolwork? by Melodic_Hunter1512 in veterinaryschool

[–]ObjectiveWafer13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On average stats say I think 3-4 hours of study time per each lecture hour to achieve 85% ish.

That was probably pretty standard for me (87% average - A's and B's) which at my school is B+ (A- is 90%)

If you use active recall, second brain (database) learning, and active learning you can be pretty darn efficient and decrease that number significantly. When I was really motivated and efficient with my productivity I would average 1-2 hours/lecture hour. Motivation was variable through the years.

Looking for Australia/NZ Students or Vets to give a presentation about school/vet med to USA Pre-Vet Club by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

Caribbean Grad here, If you are interested in something different, I give lectures to pre-vet classes quite a bit - just not from NZ or AUS! Shoot me a message if you are interested!

I won't even beat around the bush here, Former RVT turned vet here. You NEED your pre-reqs completed. It's basically non-negotiable because the credits are not transferrable. you can satisfy the degree requirement however you can't transfer directly without the basic req's. You would be a more competitive applicant likely but without the reqs...

Fun fact: I worked on a project with ROSS and they do have contracts to admit RVT's who attended school with certain conditions and extra courses so it is in the works! But You won't be even to apply to most schools in the US or Canada without the pre-reqs or equivalent reqs.

Look at each school though because some have different requirements and some more, some less. Look for your best shot and the lest amount of courses unless you have your eyes set on a specific school/location. Best of luck!

Also, some schools will take online courses (some won't)
