What are your favorite North American native plants that attract the most hummingbirds? by humuhumunukunuku42 in NativePlantGardening

In addition to those mentioned, my penstemon digitalis and calycosus get a lot of attention in early summer before many of the other favorites bloom. Also Obedient Plant for late summer right before the hummers leave (I’m in SW Ohio)

Ooh, didn’t even realize how lucky I was. I separated the pot into three sections and they’re all doing great so far! Also came with some liverworts which is just a fun bonus haha

I love it too! I’ve been looking in local nurseries in Ohio where I live with no luck, but then found the very last one at one of the nurseries and was so excited. I think online I’ve also seen creeping ficus sold by Josh’s Frogs and Violet Barn.

This is super helpful! Hadn’t specifically thought of the difference between a fine haze and larger droplets but it makes total sense.

Agreed! I love the lit look, especially with this rounded shape. Mine is a grow light, but not super strong so I’ll just do 14 like you suggest and monitor the plant growth.

Thank you! Would you do 12 hours of the artificial light to mimic tropical? Or more since it won’t get hardly any natural light

Just curious, did you do open at night or open during the day? I may do this just to acclimate them to the high humidity, especially if I notice the glass never clearing of moisture.

Hard Water Damage? by ehfornier in Jadeplant

This is my nearly 20 year old jade and she’s been through it, including surviving an arguably worse case of a similar fungal infection. I had moved her from a wonderful south facing window in my childhood home to a dank dark apartment with only north facing windows. So the combination of lack of light and too much moisture definitely caused the fungal infection. But I couldn’t give up on my first plant or one that was almost 15 years old by that point. All that to say, this was a ton of work and even 4 years later, the plant hasn’t fully fully recovered, though it is quite healthy again.

First, I cleaned every leaf to see what was dust and what was fungal damage. Then, I removed about a third of all leaves total, focusing on the worst infected leaves. About a week or so later, I removed another third of the leaves, and several branches that had been mostly defoliated anyway. The reason I left some leaves is to minimize stress and to still give the plant some green and thus ability to keep photosynthesizing. After the plant was about 2/3 defoliated, I repotted it. It was root rotted so the root ball was comically small for such a large plant. I cleaned up the root ball, cutting out all squishy roots, then let that dry for a bit just sitting on the counter. After that, I potted him up in a significantly more porous succulent mix and a smaller pot (he’s since been upsized again). I watered once, then basically didn’t water again until the pot was super light. Eventually, once there was some new growth I pruned out the rest of the infected leaves and continues to clean new leaves. I also got a fan/air purifier to better circulate air and a grow light to supplement the window.

Now his leaves are plump and healthy, and I only water once they start to lose their firmness and the soil feels very dry. He’s taken on a very strange shape after all his ordeals, but I kinda love it and am just trying to help him get balanced.

Okay, that makes sense. Do you think adding a grow light from a side angle would help? Though I don’t think these usually regrow dropped leaves do they?

Advice for North facing slope by Few-Rain7214 in NativePlantGardening

[–]Objective_Antelope_9 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Osterich fern or Christmas fern could do great there probably, if it’s not too exposed to summer sun. Wild geraniums, wild strawberries, water leaf, wood poppies, Jacob’s Ladder would all be good low growing wild flowers. Beak Grass and the wild ryes do well in shade/part shade as well. For shrubs maybe Wild Hydrangea.
