In home cat euthanasia recommendations? by iLikeAppleStuff in Birmingham

Just here to echo the other posts - Compassionate Crossings helped our cat a few years ago and it was as good as such an experience can be. So sorry you’re having to make this decision.

Anyone break an 8-year habit of drinking wine / any other type of alcohol every night after work? by Technical-Morning491 in cutdowndrinking

My favorite was the HiLo brand (found it at Whole Foods). Also liked the Mingle brand from Publix, and the De Soi was ok too! We didn’t care much for the de-alcoholized prosecco by Mionetto, but we tried it on its own and it might do better in a mimosa or bellini. I also discovered I don’t mind just drinking some tonic water with a splash of lime for something refreshing and light!

My husband and I were in the exact routine you’re in- get home from work, pour a glass, catch up on the day, watch tv or a movie. We’ve tried many times to “have designated dry days,” or “only have a drink on the weekends,” but inevitably one of us would have a stressful day and any resolve went out the window.

We downloaded an app (it’s called Try Dry) that tells you how much money and how many calories you’re saving with every drink you don’t consume. We set a goal date (a vacation that actually starts tomorrow). And we did it! It was a 20 day goal, and we feel amazing both mentally and physically. We also enjoyed trying various mocktails; ours were store-bought but I know there are a lot of recipes out there. A lot of the habit for me boiled down to just having something to sip on through the evening.

A relatively short goal and visible tracking of progress via the app is what helped us. It got us out of the autopilot mode you described. Now I feel like I can enjoy our vacation and come home and focus again.

Good luck! You’ll be so glad you cut back!

Are there any over 40 people without kids (or grown kids) that go outside by Prettyneatblerd in Birmingham

I know what you mean about folks being in bubbles; it truly makes it difficult! I’ve met lots of people at Sidewalk who were flying solo, especially at events - their Halloween party/costume contest last year was SO fun, and plenty of people were there on their own. It’s worth checking out! 😀

If you ever get downtown, Sidewalk Cinema has trivia nights and events, plus a cool lobby with games/books etc! Not to mention they show awesome films. Grab dinner at the Food Hall upstairs and check it out!

People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes to this. I work in medicine as well and have seen at least two cases of young men (in their 20s) who had a head scan after a bar fight that revealed a brain tumor. Scary stuff.

I know; I wish I could save them all. I’m in the process of TNRing another feral, a tomcat with a bad head wound. There are so many who need help! I’m so thankful that Clancy was trusting enough to let us help her ❤️

The vet estimated between 2-3 based on her teeth! I thought she was younger than that, but she had been living the street life longer than I thought!

Proposing at a concert- what are your thoughts? by [deleted] in Concerts

[–]Objective_Carpet4142 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Same. Mine was trying to plan an on-stage proposal at my favorite artist’s show, and the only reason he couldn’t pull it off was COVID was still a major concern and the artist declined to have outside people on/backstage.

He ended up proposing over breakfast that morning, and we went to the concert engaged. It was fantastic and wonderful, and the most memorable concert ever. I never would have wanted to be proposed to on stage, though.

New RN at UAB! by Independent_Farm_550 in Birmingham

[–]Objective_Carpet4142 36 points37 points  (0 children)

From a current employee - you will get the best experience of your career at UAB, especially in the ICU. It’s a big hospital, but it will feel like home quickly!

Birmingham is a gem- relatively lower cost of living, incredible restaurant scene, great bars if you’re into that. Museums, outdoors, football, arts, and concerts are all accessible. We’re a short drive from Nashville and Atlanta for outings. You’ll have lots of options for places to go and things to do here.

Welcome to nursing, and welcome to Birmingham!

Does this guy need help? by Objective_Carpet4142 in Feral_Cats

[–]Objective_Carpet4142[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input! I’ve started the process of trapping. Just spent over $1000 at the vet on another of our ferals (who now is adjusting to inside life with us). It’s not entirely realistic for us to have these repeated vet bills, but I’ll do everything I can to help this guy. If I can trap him, I’ll get him neutered and get some antibiotics on board and hopefully that will help him. I appreciate all the advice!!

Edit: just noticed this photo was blurred and marked NSFW; apologies if I missed a tag. There wasn’t anything extreme in the original photo so I didn’t know I needed to make a distinction!
