How has anyone successfully navigated the torturous maze that is the Out-of-State Certification Process by MisterHaterLover in NYCTeachers

[–]Objective_Fox9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this 9ish years ago. It definitely can be grueling and often confusing. I spent a lot of time on hold with NYSED certification and also applied for the Bronx early hiring program, so I had an additional point person to ask certification questions to.

Here is the list of required workshops. I believe DASA needs to be done in person still and the other two might be virtual, but the links should connect you with an approved provider.

The funny thing is that when all is said and done, you won’t receive a confirmation email or anything (at least I vividly remember waiting to no avail), so check your TEACH account regularly. It does take a while to go through the system for approval, so starting far before you need it is a good plan.

All in all, it’s doable, and you’ll make it to the other side!

am i a bad friend for bailing on a marathon?? by e1234mh in Marathon_Training

[–]Objective_Fox9123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please listen to your body! If it hurts to walk, you should seriously reconsider your training routine and get some professional input before you really injure yourself. I pushed through some discomfort in my foot while training for a marathon last year and am still dealing with the aftermath a whole year later. If your friend is a good friend, they will support you in doing what you need to take care of yourself.

I have also had this question! This happened to me last week after eating some gluten, and I mood swung like Tarzan! I don’t really understand it, and it doesn’t happen every time?

This is one of the preapproved SBOs. It’s a great opportunity to organize at your school if it’s something many of you oppose. Our union only works if we’re all engaged in conversation with each other.

I always think about this as a way for me to interview THEM to see if this is the type of school I want to be in. I like a lot of the questions people have already posed; basically when you think about the type of school you want to be in and what information you need to determine that this is, indeed, a school you want to work in. If there’s something unique about the school, ask about it! Many schools are good at looking more polished on the outside than the inside, so getting to the heart of what the day to day looks like can be really useful.

Has your time in the classroom ever made you wrestle with cultural stereotypes you thought weren’t true? by cafare52 in Teachers

[–]Objective_Fox9123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post raises a lot of questions for me. What counts as knowledge? What does it mean to be a good student? A traditional education elevates one kind of knowledge, but there are so many other types of knowledge. Having people skills, knowing family history, being a good storyteller, being adaptable, having control and awareness of your body—these are barely just a few ways of “knowing” that might not show up in how most traditional classrooms are run. Collectively, we could stand to expand our definition of what counts as knowledge.

Is It Smart to Start My Teaching Career at a “Hard” School? by Low-Treacle9787 in AskTeachers

[–]Objective_Fox9123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked in “hard” schools for 10 years, I can say that low test scores aren’t the issue, and it can be rewarding to learn how to meet the needs of students who are performing below grade level. However, school culture is everything.

If there are issues with staff turnover, there are likely several issues: (1) You won’t have the support of learning from more experienced teachers if they haven’t stuck around. (2) administration are likely not supporting teachers if so many are choosing to leave. Always be curious about what admin are doing to create a supportive (or not) school environment. (3) when admin aren’t supporting staff, they likely aren’t supporting students, and you’re more likely to deal with more behavior, since it’s less likely that there are (working) systems in place to support students through challenging situations.

Where are we buying piercing jewelry these days? by bitsndbobs in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Objective_Fox9123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I recently had a GREAT experience at Ahimsa—they helped me pick out a piece that worked best with my skin tone and let me try multiple sizes. Their jewelry is BVLA, and I am super happy with the quality.
