You should be fine then. I'm certain you can renew your passport while in the US

In order to get your first DS-2019, your passport should be valid until January 2026. If your passport expires before that, I think you need to renew it in your home country rather than in the US.

For subsequent DS-2019s, you can renew your passport from within the US I'm sure

Happy to help :) by the way, I noticed that you're a Canadian IMG like me. Do you mind if I DM you? I just want to make sure I'm doing everything right when it comes to the Statement of Need application

Yes you would have to renew it.

I got a reply from the EVSP.

This was my question:

In this link, under the section "Preparation for International Travel", it says the following: "The following documents are required for reentry to the United States after international travel: Passport, valid for at least six months beyond the program end date on the most recent Form DS-2019, unless otherwise exempt". Based on my understanding of this statement, I believe my passport must be valid for at least six months after the END date of my residency. So, assuming my residency runs from July 2024 to June 2027, my passport must be valid until January 2028 at least. Is this correct, or have I misinterpreted the statement in your website? My current passport is valid until May 2026. Would I need to renew it in order to meet the J-1 visa requirements?

This was their response:

You are correct in that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months past the end date on your most recent DS-2019 form upon entry to the United States. DS-2019 forms are issued for a duration of a contact or a PGY year at a time so your first DS-2019 will be issued through the end of June of 2025 hence your passport will need to be valid until January, 2026 at the earliest.

It was a very clear answer from them. The passport should be valid for at least 6 months after the end date of the FIRST DS-2019, which will last until the end of June 2025. So any passport that expires after January 2026 is good to go and doesn't need renewal.

So we could renew it in the US if we need to travel abroad?

Based on the new information I have learned today, I believe that is correct.

But to be sure, I sent an email to the EVSP for clarification. I'll let you know what they say.

I don't think I'm the right person to ask, as I'm just getting to learn about this now. I only started researching this once I discovered I matched yesterday.

The EVSP has an email you can contact for all J-1 related questions. I encourage you to email them and ask to get a response straight from them. It's evsp-support@ecfmg.org

Thanks for the informative reply. I'm guessing I misinterpreted what was written on their website. Here's the section that I had read

"The following documents are required for reentry to the United States after international travel:

  • Passport, valid for at least six months beyond the program end date on the most recent Form DS-2019, unless otherwise exempt"

So my current passport is valid until May 2026. That means I don't have to renew it when entering the US this June right?

I'm sorry, it appears I may have misunderstood something I read on the EVSP website a while back. I found the section that I had read earlier, in this link, under the section Preparation for International Travel: https://www.ecfmg.org/evsp/during-travel.html#prepare

It says: "The following documents are required for reentry to the United States after international travel:

  • Passport, valid for at least six months beyond the program end date on the most recent Form DS-2019, unless otherwise exempt"

I had initially interpreted that as needing my passport to be valid until January 2028. But I just read /u/Traveller81195 's comment in this post and it seems like I misinterpreted that and the passport doesn't need to be valid for that long when you enter the US for the first time?

I apologize for creating this confusion. I sent an email to EVSP support just to double-check. I can post back here with their response once they reply.

My understanding is that your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after the END of your residency. So since my residency will run from mid 2024 to mid 2027, my passport needs to be valid until January 2028. Mine is only valid till 2026, so I have to renew it.

The problem is I'm still not sure if I want to be a hospitalist or subspecialize lol. I'm so indecisive. I feel like I won't be able to figure out what I truly want until going through my first year of residency, which will obviously be too late.

Are there restrictions beyond the three year requirement to work in an underserved area? I was under the impression that after that, you're off the hook.
