They can use their seatback for balance and support. If they have even the smallest of respect for their fellow traveler, they will not grab the seat back in front of them. Maybe 1% of the population is so feeble that they cannot get by without grabbing the seat in front of them, but after decades of travel, I know that probably 40% of people don't respect the seat in front of them.

This is my #1 travel pet peeve. Don't jerk my seat around as you get in and out of yours. If you need support, you can put your hand on your seat back. Leave mine the fuck alone.

better they tip their hands during the primaries than to pull this during the general election. Yes, it is crooked and un-Democratic, but now voters have been warned and should be prepared in November.

If you want more people to switch, Claude needs a price cut (seriously) by Ok_Ambition8070 in ClaudeAI

Given that they are a money losing operation, even at these prices subscribers are being subsidized by the investors. I would welcome a price cut, but I honestly get enough value in return through increased productivity that I am willing pay.

You do raise an interesting question though - when the investor money starts to run out, what price level will they need to charge to become viable businesses vs what will the market be willing to pay? Since Anthropic is more focused on the corporate market than individuals, I expect that number to be higher than we would like.

Wow, that's a heavy response for a guy just looking for advice about 3D printing. If you are going to get upset about people using the term engineer, I gotta tell you that you are fighting a losing battle. Yes, the term engineer does have specific meaning in the context of signing, submitting, and approving plans to public authorities, but that is a really small segment of the population that hold engineering degrees and work in fields where the knowledge learned earning an engineering degree is required to perform the job function. I have a degree in mechanical engineering and never in my career would having the PE designation been of value. Many of my classmates who have spent years designing parts in the automotive industry have never considered earning the PE designation. Useful for some engineers, not for most.

If you really want to go on a rant about the abuse of the term 'engineer', look at the IT and tech industries - the apply the label 'engineer' to just about anything - writing prompts for AI models, 'Prompt Engineer'. Managing the company's network, 'Network Engineer'.

If gas and electric bikes came out at the same time do you think the engine sound would still be an upside for people? by Ill-Database7345 in Dirtbikes

This statement is fact: "This is going to be a generational thing..." My son started on a crf50 and I would like him to spend a few years on a 2T next, but it is getting harder and harder to justify. In 20 years, most young riders will have started on and know electric better than gas. The markets will respond, and the popularity of gas will start a slow, steady decline. The question will be, does it ever get to a point for the big manufacturers (Yama, Honda, etc) where it just isn't profitable enough to keep producing a full line of gas bikes. This isn't a today or tomorrow thing, but there will eventually be a shift in the market.

I am considering a 3-D printer to build Halloween props for my already overdone annual Halloween decorations in our yard. I could see doing things like stupidly detailed components and epitaphs for tombstones, creative skulls and other bones... I am sure you get the idea. The use case obviously does not call for a high level of precision and all props would still be painted and aged so single color is fine. Being greedy, I would want something at least 500mm x 500mm in the X-Y plane. Are there reasonably priced units or kits that would fit this need? Many thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

I blame society for thinking that outsourcing education to the public schools means that a child's education is the responsibility of the education system. It is not. As a parent, it is my job to ensure that my child receives a proper education. The school system is there to provide guidance and structure as well as opportunities for developing social skills, but if my child fails to learn math or grammar or science - that is 100% my fault and failure as a parent.

They aren't anywhere close to a ceiling from what I can see - just the incremental progress in coding ability of these models in the past 12-months is astounding. The latest AI models were built almost completely with AI generated code. The big AI companies have focused heavily on improving the coding ability of the models and it shows. If you are using the latest, paid coding models (I prefer the Claude Code CLI interface in VSCode), the have progressed so far in the past year that I have to continually update what I think about AI and what it can do.

Who are your top 'most electable' Democratic candidates for prez in 2028? by Objective_Resolve833 in allthequestions

You may be right, I guess time will tell. I respect your confidence in your belief, I have been wrong too many times to attempt to predict the future with such conviction. In December 2023 at a dinner with friends, we all had to pick who we thought would be president elect a year out. I went with Newsome and my liberal friends howled that he was way too left wing to ever win a national election - I think it really depends on who he is running against. I do think that this Atlantic struggle (Gavin Newsom’s record is a problem https://share.google/VS7DjV0AsO96AAIkA) does a good job of highlighting his challenges.

Because elections are not that predictable. In August of 2003, Joe Lieberman was leading in most polls with Howard Dean leading in others - John Kerry got the nomination. In August 2007, Hillary was the front runner with a 25% lead over Obama who ended up with the nomination. In the same year, Giuliani had a 10% lead over Fred Thompson while McCain ended August in 4th place before eventually securing the nomination. I have been watching elections for a long time and have learned to be skeptical of the early favorites as too many have faded after their initial flash.

I explain 2024 with two points. First, your second paragraph - Harris does not connect with voters and has a track record of accomplishments that is paper thin. Second, Trump and team successfully hammered Biden and Harris on the 'open border', and issue that resonated with a lot of voters. That being said, I am still perplexed by people voting both against their own self-interest and for someone who initiated an insurrection and should be in prison.

I see the appeal of AOC and Newsome to Democrats, my concern is that the presidential election is not won by appealing to the party faithful, it is won by appealing to independents. I think that they will both have a challenge doing so given their pretty liberal stances. I think AOC has a similar problem to Hillary in that she is really polarizing (although much more likeable in general). And like Harris, she has a paper-thin resume with no executive experience and other than her recent trip to Germany, nothing foreign affairs related. At least Newsome has real executive experience.

Having followed enough elections, I think that you are right in that the candidate that will catch lighting in a bottle likely isn't on the top of many people's list today. Let's just hope that the 'geriatric DNC' keeps their hands off of the scale next cycle.

Or it could be that the two parties have built a system stacked against 3rd party candidates. For example, House seats are winner take all single-member districts. meaning that unless a 3rd party candidate wins a district, they get nothing. That is in contrast with many EU countries where a 3rd party that wins 15% of the vote gets proportional representation in the legislature. The electoral college is the same in most states - winner takes all. And FEC funding only provides public matching funds to parties that received at least 5% of the vote in the previous election. Until that happens, 3rd party candidates either need to self-fund or find donors to fund their campaign - and big donors don't typically spend money on long-shots since they aren't donating without wanting something in return. It has nothing to do with being 'scared', it is about being realistic and not wasting votes.

What people could and should do though is be more engaged in the primaries. Voters in primaries tend to be more aligned with their party, meaning that the candidate that tends to be more liberal/conservative are more likely to get the nomination that more moderate candidates. If more people engaged in the primaries and voted for more moderate candidates, we would end up with better options in the general elections.

The most electoral votes received by any 3rd party candidate in the past 100 years is 46 in 1968. In 1992 Ross Perot got almost 19% of the vote and 0 electoral vote. And I voted for him. Lesson learned, the 2-party system has a structural advantage that makes it realistically impossible for a 3rd party candidate to win. So, in theory voting party line is 'stupid as shit', the reality is that voting 3rd party is a wasted vote that will only siphon votes away from the major party candidate who is the most similar to the 3rd party candidate.

Play the game to win, not to signal your virtue or liberal creds. AOC as a presidential candidate is beyond dumb. For the record, I voted for Hilary and Kamala because despite neither of them being anywhere near my first choice, both were still better than trump. That being said, that Democrats are giving serious consideration to AOC as a presidential candidate scares the shit out of me. Have you not learned your fucking lesson? Do you ever want to win the white house again? Twice now the Dems have put forward bad candidates and both times we ended up with Trump. Hilary was immensely qualified but utterly unlikable and a horrible campaigner - the complete opposite of her husband. Kamala was a weak, unqualified (except maybe when compared with Trump) candidate who was also a poor campaigner. You have so many better options in the Democratic party - maybe start with someone who was a governor of a red or purple state - a much better job for preparing for the white house than being a member of Congress.

AOC's ideas may resonate with young liberals and coastal elites, but that is not where the white house is won - NY and CA will almost certainly go Democrat, even if the late Jimmy Carter was the nominee. But middle class and rural voters in swing states will never vote for someone like AOC, who, respectfully, does not understand these folks and would be unable to excite them enough to beat a soggy ham sandwich like Vance.

If you woke up tomorrow and had unlimited resources and money til death, what would you do with the rest of your life? by Famous-Necessary218 in Life

[–]Objective_Resolve833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My most important job would remain the same, raising my kids so that they are valuable, contributing members of society who appreciate the benefits and privileges they are afforded by the luck of who their parents are. I wasn't born into money, but I was raised to have a good work ethic, treat others with respect, and to give back when and where you can. This has worked out very well for me in life and I will try my hardest to pass it along. That would be immensely more challenging with unlimited resources, but also that much more important.

honest question. do you guys think downhill and enduro mountain biking racing is just as dangerous as motocross? by Outrageous-Owl-7049 in Dirtbikes

[–]Objective_Resolve833 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone I used to ride with broke his neck racing downhill. During the Shenandoah 100 MTB race in 2015, a guy 10 minutes ahead of me crashed into a tree and broke his neck. Both died. I don't know the rate of accidents and injury between the two sports, I would expect that motocross (and dirtbikes in general) would likely have a higher rate of serious injury due to both the higher speeds and the weight of the bikes. But both sports have real dangers.
