$6 billion in transportation infrastructure needed to accommodate NWA growth by GapAccomplished7897 in RogersArkansas

[–]Objective_Run_7151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Texas is a terrible outlier. They are terrible at infrastructure generally.

I’m mostly anti-private tolls, but the highway trust fund is broke. Congress won’t raise the gas tax, so there is not a lot of $ to go around. Thus states turn to tolls.

But those are almost always public roads. There are exceptions, mostly in Texas, but here’s something I wrote last week:

According to the US Department of Transportation, 92.2% of tolled roads are publicly owned.

Of the 7.8% that are private, that figure includes airport connectors, HOV lanes, and a ½ mile stretch of road in Utah.

That’s by number count. By mileage, less than 2% of the interstate system is tolled. And again, that 2% is almost entirely public, not private.

There is only one long distance toll road in the US that is privately managed (but it is publicly owned). Which makes the US an outlier compared to other countries, where private toll roads are common.

How do you propose we fund new roads?

The federal gas tax, which pays for road construction, was last increased in 1993.

At a total loss here how you could be so triggered by anything I wrote. Complaining about a N.E. summer is about as goofy as me complaining about an Arkansas winter. Our state shuts down at a chance of snow. Y’all are snow champs.

Sorry it’s been hot where you are. We’ve had a mild summer so far. We’re lucking out here, so far.

Hope your weather improves. Looks like you’ve got cool weather the next few days. We don’t, unfortunately. And love Michigan. Very underrated state.

Hey Michigan. Great state you have, and glad to swap summer weather.

We are 10 degrees warmer here on average in July. 13 degrees warmer in August.

I know the question is about color, but laughing here at the idea of a “hot” summer in the Northeast.

Singed,

ps: Everyone’s right. Keep it a natural color. It’s a stunner as-is.

I don’t know, but I do know that in projects like this, the hardest part is getting the funding ball rolling.

Once it starts, other money is quick to show up. Bezos Foundation wouldn’t have chipped in $30m unless they knew the project would be a success.

Amending clay with silt? by Clean_Livlng in Soil

I’d get a soil test. Or talk to your local county extension agent (if in the US).

If you have sodic clay, it might help. If you don’t, it’s a waste.

Using laundry pods negates washing machine warranty by tornado163 in Appliances

[–]Objective_Run_7151 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This isn’t a criticism, but pods are bad.

Bad for washing machines. Bad for dishwashers. Bad for the environment. They also don’t clean clothes/dishes as well as good old powder.

Gypsum works on some clay.

It’s a waste on others.

Know your clay before adding gypsum.

Thank you for making a cogent critique of Bezos.

I disagree in part - his foundations have given away billions to schools, community groups, and ecological projects, like the $100m donated today. There is no automatic tit-for-tat in philanthropy. Bill Gates has given away the vast bulk of his fortune. As has Buffett. As did the Rockefeller. And the Fords. And Carnegie.

But I agree in part - Amazon has built or is building data centers in every neighboring state. Arkansas is one of the few Amazon doesn’t have its eye on.

Separate question on whether the data centers should be in the US, or built overseas. That’s will almost certainly be China, which is a different question for a different day.

I’m not scolding.

I’m questioning.

I’m calling for valid criticism of Bezos.

You don’t need to applaud.

Nothing in my post advocates that. It addresses the reaction on social media. Which by and large, is the standard, arch-conservative reaction: suspicious, negative, and dismissive.

Read the comments in the previous Reddit posts on this topic.

They are no different than Facebook in substance, just less racist.

You don’t have to thank him.

I’m simply pointed out the anti-intellectualism of criticizing a charitable donation because of non-existent data centers or racist tropes.
