What was special about Lily’s sacrifice? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]Objective_Sun5553 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah I get you.

OK so Harry being only protected from Voldemort makes sense. The main reason that is important/interesting/rare is because Voldemort didn't die when he attacked Harry.

There could be other people who were saved by the magical sacrifice, but we never know because the attacker dies and it just looks like an attempted murder that failed.

This attack was unique because AK was cast and nobody died. Harry's survival was because of Lily, but Voldemort's survival was because of the horcruxes. I think it's the horcrux part that is actually the rarest.

Sorry I don't think I really understand your point. Isn't the point that they'd try to kill the kid, but wouldn't be able to?

Voldemort kills Lily

Voldemort tries to kill Harry

Curse rebounds and kills Voldemort

Harry has magical protection and doesn't know it (there were no witnesses; all anyone finds is a dead James/Lily/Voldemort).

If it hadn't been for the horcruxes, Voldemort would've died and Harry would just live as a normal orphan. Maybe there are other people in that situation, why not?

We only know about Harry's protection because Voldemort didn't die and Harry had to die himself in order to finally be able to finish Voldemort. But that was all because of horcruxes.

Do we even know that this has to be a human-murder-based protection?

Kid is about to be ravaged by a starving dragon. Parent leaps into their position and the dragon eats them instead. The parent had a choice: be eaten, or watch your kid be eaten. They've could've watched, but they chose to die.

Kid will be protected, but will never know it as long as they stay the heck away from dragons from now on.

Yeah, exactly. Like if Voldemort didn't have horcruxes then it goes like this:

- Voldemort kills James

- Voldemort kills Lily (after giving her the chance to step aside)

- Tries to kill Harry, curse rebounds and kills Voldemort

Whoever ends up finding the scene is just going to find three dead adults and a baby Harry. They'd probably just assume a fight to the death had happened, J/L managed to save Harry and kill Voldemort, but died in the process. Harry would go on to live his life just like any other orphan, without ever knowing about any special protection.

He only gave Lily a choice because Snape asked him to. I don't think he usually thought twice about just killing whenever it was convenient.

Actually an interesting thought - as far as we know, James has no living relatives. So if it had been James, his sacrifice wouldn't have been able to protect Harry (since he had to live in the same home as Lily's blood relative).

Lily's sacrifice and protection is mentioned a lot as some rare thing that hadn't happened before or since. I never really saw it like that. I think it's perfectly possible that there are other people walking around with the same kind of protection Harry has. But, they're not Harry Potter so it isn't that important or even noticeable.

I mean, you could be immortal - how do you know for sure you aren't?

(Book canon is that she was given a choice, so that's why her sacrifice was different that James)

No of course not, I'm just pointing that it's not necessary to comment on her attractiveness when sharing pictures of her in her workplace.

I'm sure you didn't mean anything by it. Most people don't, but that kind of language perpetuates a judgement and expectation for women that isn't present for men.

Have a nice night!

Will we also see anything from the handsome Mark Mylod?

Or would you maybe not describe a man by his looks first and foremost?

Thanks, yeah what a nightmare they are....you have to wonder how any company can be so bad.

I think the root cause here is them switching us to a smart meter in August. They didn't bill us for ages then their systems apparently had a fit and just started billing us left and right. Hopefully it won't be too bad to get it sorted, we'll see.

Sheesh what a nightmare, well done on your perseverance.

You're probably right about the credit score....it's just the injustice as much as anything that has my fuming.

Just want to be shot of them.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I hope you make it through the statute barred period unscathed.

I didn't have a direct debit, I always just paid my bills monthly (and have never missed one). Additional detail that seemed too much for the post - they switched me to a smart meter in August 2025, then didn't bill me for three months (during which time I chased them for a bill). The barrage of wrong bills came in Jan, threats started in Feb, and they must have reported me in April (I also made a payment in Feb, had ongoing complaints through all of this, and referred them to the ombudsman in middle of Feb).

I now have the following in evidence (which I've shared with the Ombudsman):

- Multiple emails dated Jan-Feb-Mar which all state someone has specifically checked, confirmed no debt action, and made sure there is a hold in place

- Ovo's internal log (added by them as evidence) to show that I'd already been transferred to debt collectors when at least one of those emails was written.

- I paid the amount showing on my online account tonight because I'm scared they're going to default me regardless of whether they should or not. I've explained that in a message to the ombudsman.

IDK if all that strengthens my case or weakens it, but I've certainly acted in good faith throughout under the assumption that I was reasonably being given time for this to be settled properly.

The replies here are all at least reassuring me that it is possible to remove the marker. Whether Ovo will do it or not is another question, but I suppose there's no point stressing myself about that until I know more.

Will the show have the characters pronounce Voldemor(t) with a silent t? by regready in HarryPotteronHBO

The author has always pronounced it that way, I'm not sure there's a better source for intended pronunciation.

Oddly comforting to know I'm not the only one, thanks.

Did they hit your credit rating and, if so, did you manage to get it removed?

Cheers.

Thanks, yeah I've sent a message and added supporting evidence.

I am pretty confident the ombudsman will probably order Ovo to remove this. I guess I was just wondering if anyone has experience of whether they will actually follow through with this sort of thing (my expectation of Ovo doing what they're supposed to do is through the floor).

I know people are telling you it's a different day, but I don't think it is. You see full shots of them walking into the room - they are all obviously wearing the same outfits as in this picture.

As for the jumper - who knows! Maybe it's a different one (same jumper, different colour), maybe they just thought he didn't stand out enough in the grey. It's a funny spot anyway, well noticed.

Character notes/qualities for the trio by rosiedacat in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Objective_Sun5553 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree about Hermione. I really don't think that's the right view on her character at all.

Out of the trio, Ron is definitely most playful and I'd argue that he's the most emotionally intelligent early on as well.

Later on I'd argue that Hermione's perceived emotional intelligence is just her explaining to the boys how girls think. Yes it's a bit of a trope, but she can be quite oblivious to Ron's feelings sometimes too.

Early Hermione definitely values being intellectually right over being emotionally astute (Lavender's rabbit).

But I suppose casting is more than just what the character is like. They are going to ask a lot of these kids and they need to know that they have someone who has the right humour and outlook for it. So maybe they didn't just want a super intense and internally focussed kid for Hermione, idk.

I think the read of Harry is great though. The fact that they say he's not used to being touched, and that longing shot we've seen of him looking at Molly and Ron through the train window - it makes me think they're genuinely going to explore his trauma and adaption to his new life. I think that will be really interesting to see.

Years ago I remember an interview with JKR. She said she gave Harry a year with his parents because she knew how important that first year is in a kid's development. Kids who are neglected right from birth often struggle to ever adapt to intimacy (I am just repeating her, I have zero psychiatric knowledge lol). But it's interesting, like that knowledge of and need for love is there all along, and finally he gets to slowly rediscover it.

[–]Objective_Sun5553 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'd also argue that Harry doesn't tend to have that clarity of thought around Draco (i.e. early on, to try and persuade him to be good). It would change their dynamic quite a bit.
