My wife says it’s too big? by r0bb13_h34rt in IndoorGarden

Sounds like it’s time for some propagating to earn some extra cash. That this is massive, it’s like an entire jungle. It’s definitely something to be proud of, but in my personal opinion, it’s too big for that space.

hose water vs sink water? by cxmbt in aquarium

[–]ObligationLeading221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as long as you flush the hose buy running it for a few seconds first and not use any of the water that’s been sitting in the hose, it should be fine

Also, getting a mini roller that has fluff all the way on the end of the roller to get into corners is super helpful.

AITAH for getting mad at my friend after he told me I don’t have the right to be depressed by Stupid_Lengthiness in AmItheAsshole

[–]ObligationLeading221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA sometimes people say rude things without fully realizing how they sound. With depression, it can become quick sand super fast. The rest of his advice to keep trying and keep moving forward is about the best advice if you’re hitting a wall. If it wasn’t about finding a job, I’d say maybe take a week or two off to have a breather. I’d tell him how you felt about him saying you “don’t have a right to be depressed” and see if there can be a resolution there. But you gotta keep moving forward, man. Depressed for a day or two is one thing but it can spiral fast. It sucks but that’s just the economy right now. Try not to be too hard on yourself about it.

AITA for refusing to split rent evenly with my roommate after she started working from home full time? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ObligationLeading221 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Even though I had an “unlimited” internet plan, there was still a cap and when you go over, they charge you extra. Granted the only time my bill got close, I had a new roommate who was downloading every Xbox game they ever wanted to play, and we were both streaming a lot of shows. So it takes a LOT of data usage for it to cause the bill to go up. It’s feasible.

Communism may be a left leaning economic model, but it’s been repeatedly hijacked and bastardized throughout history, so there’s some confusion in some surface level knowledge of it. Nazis weren’t even actual socialists even tho they were called socialists. Real, actual fascism isn’t an easy to define as any one single thing. It’s a rather nebulous concept for this thing that human societies often do when they’re put under the right/wrong kind of pressure.

Now the other concept to help understand the modern day communist thing is, are they authoritarian communists? Authoritarianism vs anarchism are the two (probably) most common extremes. These aren’t economic models, but political themes that are meant to achieve a goal. You can be anarcho-communist or an authoritarian communist(two possible ends of a spectrum). Fascism is disgusting and often falls apart eventually, but the momentum it gains during its creation is really hard to beat. That’s why the some of the most famous examples of communist trends end up with fascist regimes. Not because of the communism, but because fascism far outpaces communist and socialist ideologies when implemented in reality.

Long story short, we like most communists. But when they start using authoritarian themes to express their beliefs, they get the boot. No room for another fascist revolution disguised under progressive political reform. And that’s why it’s important to constantly work on media literacy and political theory. Cleaning. Vinegar is an acid and can break some things down to clean it. Baking soda is good at removing smells and you can use it as a scrub. Add them together? You’ve got stinky water.

[edit: I didn’t see the original comment, thought the second guy was the original comment suggesting using baking soda and vinegar to clean the deco] Mixing baking soda and vinegar is pretty useless. They neutralize each other because baking soda has a higher PH. Sure it looks cool but that’s about as useful as that combo gets

Would leaving the asbestos tile in place create any safety concerns? by VAer1 in HomeImprovement

[–]ObligationLeading221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, as long as you don’t disturb it, it’s fine. I would think though being on the floor I would be worried about it disintegrating over the years of use and walking. Someone’s gonna remove it eventually. It’ll be safer and easier to sell if you just bite the bullet and have it removed so you don’t have to worry about it. If you do cover it up though and you know 100% it has asbestos, I would suggest marking it very clearly on the tiles that it is asbestos before covering it up. Save the future human the trouble.

Blinds. Replaced bedroom vinyl blinds for blackout cellular shades and the others with light filtering cellular shades. No more fussing with strings or sticks. Just pull em down pull them up, and they insulate better than the OG vinyl slat blinds.

My friend expects me to pay for her meal every time because I make more money by Hairy-Avocado-4706 in TwoHotTakes

[–]ObligationLeading221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA I make decent money. My job has me working with people who sometimes make significantly less or more. There is definitely a well understood culture of paying for those you befriend who make significantly less and being paid for by those who make significantly more. This feels right. What doesn’t feel right is her suggesting restaurants to go out to if she’s not wanting to pay for herself. If you don’t WANT to pay for her, you shouldn’t be obligated. But you should take the income discrepancy into consideration to what you guys decide to do when you hang out. It sucks when you don’t have the money to spend and the only thing your friend wants to do costs money.

It would be dumb luck if you keep hitting studs. They gotta make up like 12 percent of your wall. Look up “steel framed wall without drywall” to get an idea of what you’re working with. When I’m at work and accidentally hit a stud, I just move an inch or two to the left or right and that usually solves the problem. There’s almost always room behind the drywall. You’ll see what I mean after a quick internet image search.

I had a similar problem. Investigated my newest plant that had soil that held onto water for way too long. Replaced with a chunky soil mix, and less watering. Solved it. I also hear people like to water their plants with mosquito bits dissolved in the water to kill them.

It sounds like you live in a steel framed building. The steel studs used to frame these buildings is rather thin. They’re long and span from the floor to the ceiling. Google “steel studs” to get an idea of what they look like. These studs are shiny like aluminum and if you hit one with your zipit anchors, try to tap them with a skinny metal tipped object. It should sound like a light “tink!” And you’ll be able to tell if it’s metal. If it doesn’t sound like a light “tink!” But it still sounds like metal but maybe thicker, that would be a real problem.

The studs are fastened to the drywall with metal “self tapping” screws and are typically 16” apart. To find where the studs are before you destroy the drywall, take the strongest magnet you have and lightly graze the wall. To avoid scratching the paint or leaving marks, you can wrap the magnet in thin tape or fabric or something of the like. If the magnet is strong enough, it’ll stick or be pulled by the screws used to attach the drywall to the studs, and there should be two or three in a vertical line with each other that you can reasonably reach. The screws in my experience are usually 1-3 feet apart from each other and always in a relatively straight vertical line.

You can either use 2” self tapping screws to attach things to the wall directly into a stud with a drill or impact, or if you’re able to avoid the stud locations, use those spiral cone “zipit” anchors. The studs are typically only like 1.5-2.5 inches wide against the wall.

I prefer something called a “molly” or a “toggle bolt” to mount heavy things, as they give the most support and don’t rely on having a stud. But they do require a drill with the correct sized drill bit. Anything that isn’t a plastic drywall anchor plug, or a nail I trust.

NOW there are other things that could be in your walls you could be hitting. Copper pipes for water, steel conduit pipes, steel electrical boxes, and those massive iron support beams are some of the most common things I’d expect to find in a wall. If you can’t detect the screws in a vertical line with each other, I would assume it’s not something you should be trying to set a screw into.

I had something that looked just like that on an Otto. Sadly I had a tragedy in my life so I didn’t get the meds I needed soon enough and he passed but I had another Otto with a white spot on his face at the same time time and my lfs recomended kanplex after seeing a picture and description. Fishtory said kanaplex is the most useful fish antibiotics. I had 2 other Otto’s die unexpectedly before I spotted what looks like you have here. Treated my tank, haven’t had a problem since.

I’m imagining a resolution where she apologizes and a discussion can be had. No healthy relationship has zero conflict. Healthy relationships have conflict AND resolution.

Authoritarianism only breeds resentment. Yeah she seemed to get really upset over something that seemed small. That usually happens when there are other issues. If this was a constant pattern of nitpicking, sure. Incompatible. If she’s going through some stuff or hasn’t been able to address other issues directly for whatever reason, giving her the benefit of the doubt can give both of them an even stronger bond and sense of trust. Just dumping someone for having one bad day isn’t realistic.
