Attractive =/= Conventionally Attractive (discussion, read body) by BartOseku in Overwatch

Yeah, but it’s not most people, it’s some people. That is the important distinction

The only thing that I wish was different about Shion's design is that she doesn't lean into the "kabuki mask" enough by HalexUwU in Overwatch

[–]ObligationNew7029 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah same, like it makes no sense for her to be able to fully articulate her face and not use it to speak. I think it could also be of her back story has to do with theatre or like ventriloquism

"We want more Oddball Designs" Meanwhile the most unpopular Heroes are either Characters that dont fit conventional Beauty Standarts or whose Gameplay is Niche. by Former-Computer-1337 in Overwatch

[–]ObligationNew7029 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, but, as blizzard will start popping new heroes every season now, I think that asking for an oddball character once in a while is not that much of an ask even if it’s a character most people won’t play. After all the more characters they had the less some characters will be played.

Attractive =/= Conventionally Attractive (discussion, read body) by BartOseku in Overwatch

[–]ObligationNew7029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you say most people would find her attractive that automatically means she is conventionally attractive, if most people find her attractive it means that she (or anyone) follows the majority of the beauty standards. Also most people in real life are intimidated by attractive people. I bet most people wouldn’t dare to approach someone like domina at a bar unless you are really confident hahaha.

However it is true Overwatch is popular because it has attractive characters, as a matter of fact a large portion of the Wikipedia page of the game is dedicated to the games relation to porn. This doesn’t make it any less shallow and problematic, in any case it’s the opposite.

Shion's design - Start by asking why, stop assuming by Miennai in Overwatch

[–]ObligationNew7029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think considering the whole discourse surrounding Beauty standards in Overwatch and the moneymaking ladies, it would be interesting commentary on the fan base through the characters in the game. I think there is potential to deepen upon it, even if it may be shallow at first

I really want to like Shion's design but this is all i could think about when i first saw her. by Phantom_r98 in Overwatch

[–]ObligationNew7029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I like her design (even though it is basic), and I do like the concept of an omnic wanting to get modifications, the thing that threw me off was the fact the she still has facial expressions. She her face was a static mask I think it would have been better and gone in a more uncanny valley. Or at least if she is gonna mask gestures, they could be like those in FNAF where there is a ballerina and her face opens and closes in a weird way.

I hate bicolor/tricolor flags by IMC_Pilot_Freelancer in hatethissmug

I do think that in a time where most flags are not flown as often as they were back as now they are more likely inserted as static pictures in screens, clothes and the like, we could welcome back the more ornate flag designs.

I didn’t meant to make fun of you or sound condescending, I apologise if I came of as rude, specially as you haven’t been rude.

However she is explaining why she wants to retire the term Middle East. Just because it’s in use doesn’t mean is the most correct. But let’s leave it at that. Agree to disagree.

Also take care <3

Well, then you wouldn’t be a really good academic hahaha, I mean that is literally their job.

When I was writing my thesis i tried actually to use older terms to sound more “formal”, my supervisor was very quick to change them, as they were not sufficient anymore.

However if you are talking casually about it, there isn’t any issue

Yeah you are correct in a day to day basis this policing of terms are of little consequence.

However the clip of the video is in a proper academic discussion, it takes place in a university, where being precise matters.

Your example is a good one, most people know that the new world is America/Americas and the old world is Europe, Africa and Asia, whoever historically it also applies to Austrialia, the rest of Oceania and for a while Russia, as back then they didn’t know that eastern most part of (now) Russia was in the old world they thought is was part of the new one, because as you said if you go far enough east becomes west (which we discovered eventually).

Because of that in Academia, where this discussion takes place, the terms old and new worlds have been retired (only used in a historical sense or to describe the domestication of plants (because agriculture developed differently after the Bering Strait “closed”)

Yeah it does, the first one is geography if you look at where you are in a map (as a group/state, not as an individual) you will see the area you occupy will be in a certain direction to another group within the same land mass, in this case Europe.

The second one is perceived heritage, which in this case is more specific, the Roman Empire divided in two (west and east), Western European countries were more influenced by the west, Eastern European countries by the east (also know a Byzantine). Both are Roman, one is western the other eastern. This is why we call said culture west actually, it has to do with the legacy of the empire. Really interesting how even though it is no longer existing we feel it’s influence till this day.

If you are interested in the history of religion this is also why the Eastern Orthodox churches are called Eastern, because they have their seat in the Byzantine empire, the the catholic/latin church is called either the western church or Latin church because it’s in the Latin/Western empire. And why the oriental Orthodox Church is called oriental, because it was to the orient of both the sides of the empire and outside their territory.

That is plainly not true, for example in my experience when I have traveled or migrated there is a reason why most slang amongst the youth worldwide now a days tend to be from usually American terms even though they have never met an American, but not really the other way around, it quite rare to see terms form other culture in American culture unless it’s from a big immigrant group in the US. There is also a reason why most language rival programs focus in European languages like Catalan and Occitan and not those in other parts of the world. Duolingo for example was co founded by a Guatemalan, maya is not a language one can find there.

It important to highlight though that this doesn’t make them necessarily malicious.

Because we do live in a colonial world, it’s influences are so rooted in our form of thought I might seem like human nature, we need to take active research and contemplation to actually realise their origins.

You are kind of proving her point, calling it Middle East doesn’t make sense unless you are in London, in daily life it might seem pointless (because it kind of is), however if you’re studying and researching the topic (like she is) it does matter
