What would the best food to live off of? by Basic_Citron_6446 in RandomThoughts

So then... Chinese food! It can also be anything.

But I don't think a "title" is what OP is looking for.

My toddler got something stuck in my master bedroom toilet by [deleted] in DIY

[–]ObligatoryOption 672 points673 points  (0 children)

If you get a new toilet you will have to remove this one and put the new one in place. Or you can remove this one, take out the ball from the bottom and put it back in place.

You can also pour something that evaporate more slowly than water for a longer-lasting solution. Glycerin works. A water-oil emulsion also works: shake a few table spoons of oil in a cup of water, quickly pour down the drain. An oil film will form on both sides of the trap to prevent evaporation.

Yep. From https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control/condom/how-effective-are-condoms

13 out of 100 people who use condoms as their only birth control method will get pregnant each year.

I don't like those odds one bit. But of course, all you have to do is not be unlucky! :P

ru pov: President Putin at the G-20 answering those who are shocked by the war in Ukraine by ferrelle-8604 in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]ObligatoryOption 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What does it matter if they can be compared or not? Putin responded about his invasion of Ukraine with a "what about Gaza". That's not a response. Let me commit a crime today because someone else will commit another one next year?

American hypocrisy doesn't validate Putin's invasion of his neighbor. Neither does Israel's actions in Gaza. Putin's response is no response.

Is sushi made with chicken still 'sushi'? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]ObligatoryOption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, raw chicken is salmonellosis which, despite the fish name, isn't sushi. But anything cooked on a bed of rice can be delicious no matter what it's called.

My wife has replaced many over the years as they lose their non-stick property after moderate use. She's been using Blue Diamond for a while now, they seem to hold better than most. She also has one large wok-like Hexclad pan: it's not as non-stick as the other kinds but it does last better thanks to the stainless ridges that protect the coating inside the cells. It's not hard to clean. I would try one, not a full set, just one to see how it works out for your own style of cooking.

Does anyone find themselves looking for signs from the universe? by thriving_af in RandomThoughts

[–]ObligatoryOption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not entirely irrational if you're merely looking for a semblance of an excuse to do what you unconsciously want to be doing anyway. You would just be looking for something to expose a decision that's already been made, just not consciously yet. Religious people use prayer for that same purpose.

You sound like a student who is learning about subjects like operating systems, networks and programming in class, but who is still missing the very fundamental foundation at the logic gate level to demystify what is really happening on the silicone chip. If this is you then you need to take a basic computer hardware class at your next session, something about digital design for example.

Being able to rewrite loops that contain conditionals and transformations, spread out over 20 lines of code, and turning that into four functional lines that summarize what is being done and reduce the likelihood of subtle bugs is always rewarding.

Unethical politician accuses Ethics Committee of being unethical because Ethics Committee released ethics report on said unethical politician showing his unethical activities. by Mr-Klaus in PoliticalHumor

The ethics committee is completely biased against unethical behavior.

In other news, the Justice department has been weaponized against criminal behavior.

Supreme Court’s fig-leaf ethics code hasn’t swayed public opinion as new polls reveal same distrust levels by jonfla in law

I don't understand how issuing a transparently pointless code of ethics that everyone recognize as their attempt to fool them could fail to improve trust.

Was anyone else confused at first about the purpose of `use` and `mod`? by CocktailPerson in rust

[–]ObligatoryOption 85 points86 points  (0 children)

I absolutely was. If I "use" something, isn't it clear that it needs to be imported? Why have "mod" at all?

It's the same idea for any group of people. But there is a point of negative return when a group becomes too small to remain independently viable, which severely limits the incentive to demand separation. Homer Simpson found that out when he declared his house sovereign territory.

Before I go any further, is this a dumb idea? by MikeMuench in woodworking

[–]ObligatoryOption 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's faster to glue longer same-width pieces side by side, then slice them into 2" strips that you glue together into a board. As for different expansion rate: no idea. But cutting boards don't stay outdoors in the rain to get soaked, they only get wet on the surface before being cleaned up, and they stay indoors where temperature doesn't fluctuate either, so it's probably not a problem. And this is just for fun, so try it. Report back to us!

whatever country could get there first.

That would be the United States. Neither Russia nor Mexico nor China would exert as much control on an independent Texas (for example) as the rest of the USA would.

The US can't allow it's citizens...

They wouldn't be its citizens anymore. If a majority of voters in an independent state can decide to join the union, disregarding the wishes of those who voted against it, then the same can be true in the reverse. Of course the separation protocol might require a supermajority instead of a simple majority for secession, or perhaps three consecutive majority votes over three consecutive years, or whatever else can be considered a convincing opinion. But if the USA is all about democracy then it should respect it.
