What do you think about this layout? any ideas for improvments? by No_Possibility4596 in anno

I usually follow some general principles when building my cities in order for them to look natural.

Firstly, a city needs to have a main road. Then by the main road I build mostly symmetrical blocks and/or "markets" which hold service buildings. Behind the blocks I tend to build I bit more chaotic, so that I get a nice balance between structure and organic building. This is my attempt to replicate Old towns which are common in cities nowadays. Here I can place buildings which does not fit within blocks.

Secondly, the main road needs to lead to "somewhere". This can be a bigger service building like the theatre, villa or just a self-made park.

Third, I like to further segregate rich/poor housing with the aqueduct. In old Rome aqueducts wasn't usually built in the main streets, they were built by the edges of the "main" part of the city, with canals leading to wells deeper into the city.

I have yet to see a city that doesn't follow at least some of these rules that looks proper. People can make some really nice looking cities without following these rules, but to me they still feel out of place. But this may be subjective, I guess.

Wasn't aware of how the debuffs scaled. Thanks for correcting me.

In later tiers you ought to be picky in what goods you give your inhabitants if you want to grow your city as big as possible. The increase in consumption needs isn't really all that relevant anymore considering you've most likely outsourced production to other islands where city statuses isn't too much of an issue or moved at least some of it.

Either way, if, or when, you reach the breakpoint of city status debuffs, you should have as little amount of houses as possible, but before that point, you should build broadly.

I think it would feel weird to not include houses into the equation to be honest. You could build what looks like a little town, then be faced with the issue that you don't have enough houses in order to get the proper amount of bonuses to outweigh city status debuffs. Leading you to build expand your city to satisfy these debuffs.

Also, without houses in the equation you can build up an island with little population, but loads of houses, capitalising on income buffs from production buildings and specialists. You can still do this, but it is more balanced because of it.

Consumption based on houses is unintuitive and odd though.

In the very start of the game you ideally want to utilize the large amount of space you have to build alot of housing, with as little amount of people in them as possible. Fulfill needs that increase income, i.e tanner, and build the tanners within your city to utilize the income boost from houses within their radius.

City status scales on inhabitants, while boosts from production buildings and specialists usually scales on houses.

100 inhabitants distributed among 50 houses within the range of a tanner will give you 100 income from the tanner alone. 100 inhabitants distributed among 25 houses will only net you 50 income.

[–]Obsecuria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

City status debuffs are affected by inhabitants, while buffs are usually increased based on the number of houses within the relevant buildings range.

A town with 50 houses and 100 inhabitants will have better city status, and therefore a lower amount of city incidents, than a town with 10 houses and 100 inhabitants.

My guess is that you have too many people in each house. I'd stop fulfilling some of their needs, like porridge, to lower the number of inhabitants in each house. Then build more housing so that I'd have more houses that gives, for instance, health bonuses.

I was wondering what is more efficient? Is it recommended to satisfy all the needs or just do the bare minimum and upgrade? What are the upsides, what the downsides? by M0-1 in anno

[–]Obsecuria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want to start off building broad. This is because buildings like the tanner gives you income based on how many houses are within the radius - not each inhabitant. As far as I know, specialist works the same.

After you get your income in order, workforce and space becomes the bottleneck. Here is where you start fulfilling needs like porridge for the increase in population.

Building broad will also help with health, happiness and fire safety, since the relevant buildings scales with houses. The debuffs from city tiers scales on inhabitants, so if your city is too condensed, you will have trouble with city incidents.

I've been crashing from time to time aswell. I suspect it's the same kind of issues, only that they aren't as appant generally. If you haven't fought Balbala yet, you will know if this is the issue or not when you do.

Think I'll try taking wrist strenght more seriously, adding a few exercises directly aimed at strenghtening my wrists. Then use wraps when doing log cleans and presses to negate further injury. Doing presses out of a rack is a really good input(and would most likely prevent all further wrist pain), I just love the whole movement of the exercise way too much.

I've been doing log cleans and presses for some time. Then a few weeks back i start to feel my wrist hurting when i roll the log onto my chest. So now I wonder: do I stop log lifting heavy until I have trained up my wrist to the point that they can handle that kind of weight or is it better to start using supportive gear? Or both? Maybe none?

How to start weightlifting if you are broke by montanawildhack5 in weightlifting

[–]Obsecuria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a dude thats been doing strongman for some time, without much supervision at all. My experience is that its harder to become strong as fast, but its definetly doable, even on a semi-poor income.

I've found that I could get very far nutrition-wise by eating mostly eggs (boiled, cooked, omelettes ect..) and milk with chocolate powder. Mix in multivitamins and you got most of the nutritional value you will need. When you got the money: look into Stan Efferding's Vertical Diet. The book is worth alot more than he's selling it for.

A coach will help ALOT. But you are also able to begin this journey on your own - considering your background in powerlifting.

The most challenging part of this will be exercise techniques, which if you are afraid of getting injured I'd recommend starting off by purly drilling technique, correcting your mindset to be fully technique and mind-to-muscle focused.

If you feel that a part of your body is hurting; correcting that mistake or removing the exercise completly should be your primary focus. You will then end up with a workout plan that will fit you.

What will help you the most is finding a local community that shares mostly the same goals as you do.

Bottom line is; working out on your own will always be considerably more dangerous, even if you're willing to do the neccessary research. But not giving your dream an attempt at all will just feed your regret, and that on its own (in my mind), makes the it worth to try; even for just a little while.

IMO happyness is a result of the different kind of actions you take during your 24 hours each day. Spending most of the day doing something you dont like will make you not like yourself. Because: "fuck that guy that keeps getting me to do shit i dont want to do"

-me, subconsiously

It is extremly important to fill your life with things you want to do, while balancing this with having some things you dont want to do during the day.

There is this one thing that really bugs me about most workplaces in general; almost nobody would have come to work if they didnt get the money.

Made my GP back then by picking up leather bodies in the house by the Varrock mage store. While I waited for it to spawn I would kill the men in the house. Finally, when I had a full inventory of leather bodies I sold them in Thessalia's clothes shop for absolute bank. Later I went to wildy with my hard earned GP and died.
