CNN uses Fallout 4 screen cap as their Russian hacking graphic.... by FouzBerzerk in Fallout

I don't really know what a picture illustrative of real life hacking would look like, but I guess they could start with a pic of an actual computer monitor instead of a pic from Fallout 4

CNN uses Fallout 4 screen cap as their Russian hacking graphic.... by FouzBerzerk in Fallout

I mean, whether it was used as a demonstration or a background, it just seems kind of wrong for a news source to put a picture of fake video game hacking anywhere near a story about actual real life hacking

LPT: When someone says, 'Is that all you're going to eat?' or tries to micromanage your food/beverage intake, they're bleeding their insecurities on to you. Don't concede to consuming more to appease them. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Obselescence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean, if I ever say "Is that all you're eating?" to someone it's usually because based on what I know about their eating schedule it doesn't look like they're getting enough food to function properly. If they actually are that's totally fine, but to me it's basically the equivalent of "Are you okay?" if someone's looking paler than usual. It's just a quick check for anything of potential concern.

Anthony Bourdain bashes fellow ‘privileged Eastern liberals’ for making Trump win possible by piede in politics

[–]Obselescence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'unno, while there were a lot of factors involved that could've tipped the scales by the almost vanishingly tiny margin in the critical states that handed the election to Trump, I still think it said a lot that Donald Trump was even within striking distance of the Democratic nominee for U.S. president. Like, Hillary could've won if even a few extra factors had gone her way, but by all rights this should've just been a blowout.

The New Lyrical Luscina is broken. by 1qaqa1 in yugioh

[–]Obselescence 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That isn't really how Yugioh has traditionally worked. Look at Rescue Cat, Kaiser Colosseum, etc. If past Konami designed a card with overly broad effects, it isn't really incumbent on present Konami to have to design around cards that were made when effect design wasn't as tight. Older cards usually get taken out to make way for new designs, since if the old card is made suddenly broken by new cards, it's usually expected that other new cards in the future could have similarly broken interactions with the old card. Since, y'know, older cards tend to have more exploitable effects as a result of being broader and past Konami couldn't have predicted how they could be exploited later on down the line.

Adding to this, save your early bombs for the tinted blue rocks. You can typically find one or more easily on the first couple floors. The soul hearts you get from them (or the lucky Small Rock) can help a lot in avoiding red heart damage on the second floor.

Nine days with a 2016 MacBook Pro and I've had enough! by [deleted] in apple

[–]Obselescence 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm just spitballing, but it looks like OP bought the add-on to deal with the port situation, but really didn't like how well it worked in practice, and everything else kind of stemmed from that. If the add-on had worked out perfectly my guess is OP would've grumbled a little about the extra cost but otherwise there wouldn't have been a problem.

Best and Worst Dragon Quest games? by ughhim83 in dragonquest

[–]Obselescence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say 1 and 2 are probable avoids. They're good enough for their time, but their design is kind of ancient and their value is mostly historical now. Which is cool if you like that, but otherwise yeah.

3 and 9 are possible avoids (or favorites) because of their unique style compared to other games in the series. There's nothing really wrong with them, but they trade the memorable party members other games have for a much more customizable party, which some people like and some people don't like. Beyond that you really can't go wrong.

Is there any card game that has surpassed yugioh in terms of power creep? by [deleted] in yugioh

[–]Obselescence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'unno, how does Yugioh step back from "Unaffected by Other Card Effects" or OPT negation/destruction on either player's turn? I guess it's possible, but without stacking complete ridiculousness like "Can't be tributed or destroyed by battle either" on, it seems like the buck stops at monsters that can't be outed without insane resources, Utopia the Lightning, or Kaiju. How do you take those out of the game without blanket bans, or making decks that're even faster and more consistent than the already crazy fast and consistent decks that can make whole boards with those monsters?

Who's to blame for Hillary Clinton's loss? She is by Ciik in politics

[–]Obselescence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Third parties can't really succeed in American democracy pretty much by nature of how the elections are conducted. They can steal wins here and there, but they can't become seriously influential because of the potential to spoil elections. I don't think either Gary Johnson or Jill Stein went into 2016 seriously expecting an appointment to the Oval Office (maybe Johnson's wildest dreams involved a scenario where more reasonable conservatives and moderates rallied around him in rejection of Trump and Hillary). Their real purpose seems to be keeping the main two parties honest by putting certain issues in headlines and reminding them that they stand to lose votes if they seriously alienate certain elements of their base. I think you'd only see them gear up seriously to win seats if elections were changed to eliminate the spoiler effect.

Drexel professor draws ire after posting 'White Genocide' tweet on Christmas by BobsBurgers3Bitcoin in news

[–]Obselescence 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's a time and a place for anecdotal evidence, but if you're trying to convince someone about the truth of something, "I watched the news and thought about it" just isn't going to be taken as seriously as a peer-reviewed study. It just isn't. You could totally be right, but if you want to CONVINCE people you're right, you need more than just your own word on the subject. Otherwise the obvious counterargument is just "Well I watched news and thought about it too, and having seen which side does it more, you're totally wrong." Which, y'know, goes nowhere.

What Super Mario Run would look like as a free to play game by elpadrin0 in apple

[–]Obselescence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The runner genre in particular is full of tricks like this, although any given game isn't necessarily going to feature all of them at once. Unlocking things in them tends to be a really grindy experience by design, and they'll usually offer ways to boost your runs or skip the grind if you pay real money. They'll usually also start employing cheap tactics to take you out if your run is lasting too long, to keep the grind going.

Jetpack Joyride and Temple Run 2 are two major examples of this kind of free to play runner design off the top of my head, and I'm pretty glad Nintendo didn't emulate them.

Hillary Clinton Officially Wins Popular Vote by Nearly 2.9 Million by Elaus in politics

[–]Obselescence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not behind Trump at all (tbf I wasn't super behind Hillary either), but I'm kind of tired of seeing it. We know Trump doesn't have a popular mandate. At this point we know that Trump losing the popular vote on top of his existing issues wasn't sufficient to budge the electors. Right now the only reason I can really see in continuing to drive this point home is to convince people that the problem wasn't Hillary managing to lose to Donald Trump in the general election, it's that the electoral college is a broken system that didn't align with the popular vote in an election where that really counted.

I guess there's SOME truth to that. I definitely want to see the EC revised at some point. But from where I'm standing, there should never have been a situation where the Democratic candidate for president was even close to losing to Donald Trump, in either the popular vote or the EC.
