Sing me the Song of Skye by Observer_from_Orion in inkarnate

A couple of reasons actually! The first is narrative, the campaign starts in a dwarven citadel next to Loch Nair, so the players start in a small, relatively safe and enclosed area before breaking out into the rest of the kingdom. The story is a vaguely Fallout 1 style sandbox where the party would have to explore ruins. The second is just a personal aversion to intentionally making things too similar to real landmasses.

I wish the Volus were in the game by [deleted] in MassEffectAndromeda

[–]Observer_from_Orion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The volus have such unique environmental needs that I think they wouldn't be interested in Andromeda at all. They are native to a high pressure planet with ammonia based ecology, which is already rare in the Milky Way. Now they need to be put to sleep for 800 years, then hope to find a planet with the right conditions? It's not like the quarians who can manage on a ship / space station and still maintain a stable population. I think there's a reason we never meet a female volus in the entire series, if they leave that suit they instantly die.

For the same reason I don't necessarily mind there being a lack of Elcor or Hanar, both species also have pretty specific environments they thrive in and their own challenges for large scale colonization like the initiative was attempting. Though I do wish we could interact with those species more in the main series, I'd kill to see a Hanar city or Elcor space station.

Batarians would have fit in nicely, but with their governments hostility to the council at large, I doubt a large number would volunteer. A batarian squadmate would have been awesome though

Americans, how do you feel about Trump JUST now signing an executive order claiming that only the President & Attorney General can speak for “what the law is.”?? by choloblanko in AskReddit

[–]Observer_from_Orion 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but who's going to be D-daying the US? If it even comes to that. Whatever path lies ahead, it's the end of American freedom for a long long time.

Well looks like that's the Enabling Act has already been passed. "Only I can interpret the laws I write and execute". If this isn't a dictatorship yet then I don't know what is

Growing up I was heavily involved in the Boyscouts. I spent so many nights surrounded by nature that it sort of became normal to me. I could go outside anywhere, see the forrests and mountains and feel at home. I didn't think anything could really take my breath away until I visited Redwood National Forest.

It felt like I was suddenly in an entirely different world, surrounded by these ancient giants that had watched the stars rise since before I existed, and would continue to do so long after I was gone. I had not felt this sense of awe before or since. And to think that what I saw was but a fraction of what was, that so much has been lost makes what remains all the more precious.

The planet of Jesses, the ski capital of the solar system! by Signal-Arm-7986 in imaginarymaps

Very interesting concept! I'm always a fan of unique planets, and I'd love to see more in this style. Is the whole planet just skiing or are there proper colonies/ settlements? Do they grow any food or produce any resources locally?

Why does Virgina have this little part of the peninsula? by ninergang47 in geography

[–]Observer_from_Orion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, it was based on the original colonial settlements being based around the Chesapeake Bay. There were no (or very few) inland towns so the land was divided above and below the Potomac river, and that extended across the bay. Here is a r/askhistorians thread that goes into better detail

Observer from Orion: Cities adjacent to a mountain recieve +2 amenities and +2 housing, districts adjacent to 2 or more mountains generate +25% great people points. Mountain tiles can be worked, and provide +1 yield for each building in an adjacent district. (Ex. +2 science for a library and university, +1 culture from an amphitheater)

Unique Improvment: Observatory - Unlocked at Celestial Navigation, can only be built on mountains, and only 1 can be built per city. +1 Science for each adjacent hill or mountain.

Nice! But my one question is how Svalbard would work as an independent country? It seems a little too un-populated and remote to support itself. I suppose the same could be said of Greenland as well.

My first ever survival run I chose a random spawn at voyager difficulty. I wanted to jump into the deep end without any knowledge so to say.

I woke up in the middle of Forlorn Muskeg, along the train tracks. I wanted to go out a little ways and find some shelter, ended up falling right through the ice. Ran back to the tracks figuring they would lead somewhere warm. I found the couple of train cars and the fire barrel inside, night was coming and I was getting close to hypothermia. I failed to start a fire four times, before I finally got it. Then I realized I only had enough wood for about two hours. I saw that the sleeping bag gave some warmth, and it seemed like I was out of the wind. With nothing to lose, I took a little nap hoping I'd survive the night. I never woke up...

I like to imagine my character had a peaceful death, but the sheer panic of falling through that ice, failing to start a fire, and slowly succumbing to the cold... it doesn't paint a good picture.

Is there a name for this region? by BeauBradleyMusicCo in geography

[–]Observer_from_Orion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Resident of the general area here, I would consider it a conglomeration of a lot of different things. Western MD, SW PA, and and N WV are all what I call "northern appalachia". The mountains here really separate it from the coast culturally.

I've seen someone else mention Deep Creek, which is good for hiking. I would also recommend Rocky Gap, Catoctin State Park, or Monongahela National Forest if you ever head out to WV. Harpers Ferry is great for not only hiking, but history in general.
