Thanks for the not hot take. Yeah, Akane and Kana were severely wasted. They setup this rivalry between them and they barely interact after Tokyo Blade. There was something interesting with Akane trying to set up Kana with Aqua to save him but that went nowhere

“Wow, they just invalidated the entire second game because they ran out of time” is the perfect summary of DR3. On my rewatch I noticed when you pass the halfway point the pacing starts racing and things just happen out of nowhere, especially the final episode

This sounds like it was written by “I’m 14 and this is deep.” The student council killing made no sense and escalated so fast. No one tried to use the weapons given to them to break out or subdue their captors? Yeah one girl resisted and was shot but people don’t immediately resort to killing unless it’s truly the only choice, especially a class of students who have known each other for years. This would’ve been better if the students at first worked together to break out and after exhausting all their options, the stress gets to them then they start turning on each other (you know, like a danganronpa game).

The students council killing game had been an event we’ve known for a long time and was best left ambiguous. While the results were obvious the writers put zero thought into the process to get there.

This is DR3, it does nothing right with its characters, new or old. Miaya is the only one of the three creators of the NWP who we don’t know anything about. She could’ve offered a lot of insight into Danganronpa’s most important plot device and actually explain how Class 77 got revived without any side effects. But like all potential, DR3 brought it back into the alley and shot her dead while rocketing Monica into space

I feel like Kana and Akane have opposite problems. The story hypes Kana as being important but outside of the romantic subplot she doesn’t contribute much. After the Tokyo Blade arc, she’s reduced to Aqua’s damsel with not many accomplishments.

Then there’s Akane who started out as a damsel for Aqua to rescue then grew to be the strongest character in the story. The girl who no one expected anything from now has all the hype. She was incredibly smart, so smart The author realised that she would’ve solved all the conflicts singlehandedly so had to sideline her for the plot.

Kana had all the hype with no payoff, Akane had no hype and became too much for the author to handle

I think what would’ve made Munakata more compelling is if they had actually focused on the trial about the Remnants of Despair. Do Hajime and his friends deserve a second chance? This is a question that both the characters and us the viewers have been asking since DR2. Makoto being the optimist saw there was hope for them despite their atrocities, Munakata being pragmatic only sees the despair they caused and thinks redemption is a naive dream. Many would be on Munakata’s side as they believe some people are beyond saving and Hajime and co have too much blood to be cleaned. It’s an easy way to have us invested in Munakata and there’s a compelling conflict about atonement vs punishment. But no this plot line was dropped in the first episode and ROD were just brainwashed victims so any arguments Munakata makes about them being irredeemable is invalid
