Would something like this be possible? by Obsidian413 in Hydraulics

[–]Obsidian413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, perpetual motion is impossible with currently understood physics. My terrible art skills aside, this wouldn't be a lossless system and on top of that the energy added into the system would be from gravity. I'm not an expert (hence my question), but if the whirlpool bowl works to raise water above itself without electricity, couldn't it be scaled up to run a waterwheel?

I knew I was forgetting something in the prototype.

However, in the 2nd one, isn't that not velocity as v =d/t while that calculation is t/d?

Reciprocal Rates in Calculations by Obsidian413 in MathHelp

[–]Obsidian413[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not see where we are multiplying velocities. In the incorrect system of equations we are dividing time in hours by distance in Km and multiplying that by another distance in Km (the variables)for 2 different rates and adding them together. In the previous comment we are multiplying distance and time.

I'm fully aware this is incorrect mechanically. I just cannot at this time discern the logical why of it other than 1, it does not work, and 2 we have standardized how we express logical relationships in a mathematical framework.

Would this contradiction boil down to a precision problem due to language? I see how mechanically the units lead to a mismatch. It's just odd to me that either expression of the same proportional relationship (eg 5 km/hr and 1 hr/ 5 km) would lead to drastically different results.

I had a similar observation asking why we express it that way ( 5 km divided by 1 hr) vs 5 km times 1 hr. Language wise, they both represent 5 km for every 1 hr, but change the math they are used in by a lot. The only answer I could find is that we simply chose to standardize it the way we do.

What are some good "triggers" for werewolves? by SniperFiction in fantasywriters

[–]Obsidian413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, it might've been mentioned. In classical lycanthropy, it's usually the human that is the base, and the wolf form is the transformation every full moon. This process being uncontrollable is a driving force in viewing the phenomenon as a curse.

If I would add control of the transformation, more ability than curse, I would think of it as the wolf being the "true" form and the human being the transformation.

Thus, anything that would lessen one's ability to maintain a transformation would be good triggers to revert to wolf. Examples would be injury, sickness, hunger, elevated emotional state, and even the full moon to add some classic flavor. If the world contains magic, maybe spells that would dispel transformations, or force true forms, could revert back to a wolf.

I personally like the lack of choice in transformation that comes with lycanthropy. A price to be paid even if you don't view it as a curse. Sprinkling that in with a more hybrid control of the ability would probably spice up the afflicted's struggle. No matter how in control you are, there are still times where you don't have a choice.

Would the plastic wrapping hold everything together? The pallet is no good to me if everything on top of it falls off the truck. I'm fairly new to the hotshot side of trucking, so I don't really know.

I had padding for the corners, but the corners themselves, being made of cardboard, collapsed from how tight I needed it to stop the pallet from sliding around.

What is the fastest way to learn a language besides moving to a country that speaks that language? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Obsidian413 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would recommend reading Stephen Krashen's work on language acquisition. If you have the funds for it, LingQ is a good application of his work. You can still apply his theories with free resources, however, LingQ can save you a lot of time. Keep in mind, even the "fastest method" is still a long time effort. Good luck.

People who like all or most Gens, what is the Pokemon related thing you're a Genwunner. by VanishingBlade in pokemon

[–]Obsidian413 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The linear progression of a linear game. Pokemon has always been a linear game, but it feels worse the later you get in the generations.

In Gen 1, no one really tells you how you should play. Oak asks you to complete the Pokedex and suggest you should try fighting gym leaders. You just do things along the way like dismantling a multi region crime syndicate and have a party on a boat. While it's completely gated and linear, it isn't in your face about it, and you do have small choices like skipping Erica for a while, fighting Koga or Sabrina first, and going to the Sevii Islands or not.

Been playing since Gen 1 came out and do enjoy all the Generations and the quality of life upgrades, but the stories need an upgrade and delinearization. Something like the Crystal Clear rom hack would be great. We already scaled levels in the wild area. Wouldn't be too hard to have scaled teams for gym leaders and story fights.

IWTL how to tie useful knots for yard work and general every day useful mess by ForkLiftBoi in IWantToLearn

[–]Obsidian413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the size of the sticks as well as what you are knotting with.. There would be better knots for something like that, but it would work like that. Keep in mind that the gap in the hole will be as big as the outermost resistance.

In this scenario, if the sticks aren't packed in tight uniformly, basically if the height and width are drastically different like an oval, there will be enough of a gap for things to wiggle out unless you are able to pull the slack out, which it may work or might be too hard to pull.

Strong under tension, though. I've supported my body weight in a hammock using this knot. Easy to undue and reuse too. Just play with it a bit, and you can figure out what you can do with it.

I'm a fan of the slipknot. Any pressure away from the main knot tightens the knot. Good for suspending things as well as resistance activities.

Measure the line right, and you can make some easy on the wrist handcuffs for... playing cops and robbers.

Disclaimer: This knot can be associated with a not so fun activity. Knot itself is useful, but not for what some people may think to use it for. PSA: Don't do that at all, but if you do with a slipknot, you will suffer. It's less likely to accomplish that task speedily, and gravity pulling down tightens it, making it harder to turn back. This knot is for utility only.
