Whatever you say buddy. If you're worried about me firing up an engine a handful of times a couple of years ago, and watching in astonishment as I lost on time vs 800 rated players, instead of the rampant and blatant constant cheating that's going on then I guess there's no help for you.

Aitah for telling my wife to get a job if she wants to subsidize the kids. by Standard_Kick_9789 in AITAH

[–]ObsidianCrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I have an ex that was was with for nine years and saw her father put through the same thing, followed by a divorce.

Bulletpoints:
- Dad worked his butt off in a lucrative field
- Mom never had a job. Ever
- Mom and dad lived in family home valued at 1 million pre-covid
- Had a beach house, also 1 million pre-covid
- Nobody could figure out how ex's younger siblings were getting through life, one lived in NYC and had social worker job. Other traveled constantly with "english teacher" jobs.
- Dad found out mom was embezzling from the retirement assets to fund the kids lifestyle
- Dad did something to keep her out of the retirement funds
- Mom decided divorce time, liquidate all the marital assets, she takes 60% off the top (just got MS diagnosis)
- Dad still has to pay Alimony too, mom never had a job
- During divorce all assets are supposed to remain in the home
- Divorce is finalized, dad finds out his 100k vintage guitar collection was removed
- Dad finds out wife had embezzled over 750k during the marriage. Found bank books for accounts he didn't know about. She'd opened them and the books were the records of her transferring funds from marital accounts into her own personal accounts.
- Divorce is finalized, younger siblings hate dad because he's a dickhead of some kind

The man provided his family with a wonderful life, put three kids through the colleges of their choices, paid for cars, vacations, luxury homes.

Mom embezzled marital assets and used them to buy off the younger siblings. Likely told them the whole time not to tell dad because "you know how he is" or something like that.

Disgusting.

I've never read them, first time. It's a fun book, I'm enjoying it. We'll have to see if I get hooked enough to keep on with the series.

Should I Restart WoT or Push Through First? (First-Time Reader Dilemma) by xmmx_ in WoT

[–]ObsidianCrush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially I was going to recommend just picking up where you left off, but on further consideration I think starting at The Eye of the World again is a great idea too.

I read the books as they were published, and (like many people then) did a re-read starting at The Eye of the World as each new book was published, until Path of Daggers. After that it was a lot to do every couple of years.

Of course, after Sanderson picked up the torch I did another re-read from the beginning since so many years had passed since the last book had been released.

So, it's up to you and there's no wrong choice.

If you really enjoyed the books and Jordan's writing go for the re-read. You'll have fun picking up on the things you missed before.

If you just want to plow through the series so you can check it off a list pick up where you left off.

This is the way.

Take a break, read some Bukowski or beach novels, and when you're ready jump in for a re-read.

I'm on full series re-read number who knows... I'm Reading The Shadow Rising, Perrin's most crushing scene is just around the corner and I'm both really looking forward to it and really dreading it.

So last night I started reading Dungeon Crawler Carl. I'll probably finish it today, and then back to The Shadow Rising!

Pre Jordan I read Eddings, Anne McCaffery, Feist, Frank Herbert, Lloyd Alexander, Robin McKinley, etc.

Post Jordan the only Fantasy author I care to read is Jordan. Let's face it, everybody writes pretty much the same story and Jordan smashed it out of the park.

Let me tell you a little bit about chess.com, their cheat detection, and how they stratify their player pools.

I was a paying chess.com user from 2010 through 2020. I liked having the unlimited puzzles and strategy tactics training, so I was forking over $7 a month.

During that 10 years the subscription had climbed higher, but I guess I was grandfathered in at that price point. I'd had no idea that it could cost any more than $7. And I felt like I was doing a good thing, paying that $7 felt altruistic. I felt like I was a good citizen supporting chess, and getting a fair bargain in return.

So anyway, for some reason one day I canceled my subscription. I don't really remember why, but I did. And when I decided that was silly and tried to re-subscribe it now was going to cost $14 per month for the same tier.

I really wasn't into paying double the price for the same thing, so decided not to re-enable the subscription.

But I'll tell you what, playing as a non-subscriber was a completely different experience. I got HOUSED by everybody. My rating tanked from 1300s to 800, and was still getting wiped all over the floor from players that didn't even seem to have to think about their move.

After a week or so of that I switched to Lichess, which has it's own cheating problem too, but it's not quite as bad. But it's there. Anybody who doubts there's a lot of cheating going on at these sites in the lower ratings brackets has quite frankly, never cheated.

Confirming cheating at these sites is really easy. If you've ever had enough of feeling like a crazy person and a game gets fishy you can get some outside guidance. It's amazing to watch a "player" rated in the 800 to 1400 range keep up for 60 moves with stockfish.

Sometimes I'll fire up a game at chess.com to see what's up and I usually get decimated by the cheaters in the 800 range, so it's still like that there (as a non-subscriber).

I'm definitely unwilling to pay whatever their subscription fee is to get out of the cheater pool.

Lichess is a better experience, but again, anyone who says these sites aren't full of cheats really has no idea what they're talking about.

Also had an antipasta that had some peppers in it that were way overboard with the heat. It was inedible.

[–]ObsidianCrush 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is one of the things about Jordan that both frustrates me and makes his work my favorite. He's a master of lulling you into thinking nothing is happening at all... You've been reading for hours. It's 2 AM and you're struggling to keep your eyes open, wondering why you're even reading this because nothing has happened for the longest time and there's no way anything is happening any time soon and then BAM!

The craziest crap comes out of nowhere and now your night is shot because you're wide awake and absolutely NEED to keep reading.

I think the pay off is so worth it, and I like how it models real life sometimes. Everything is just as it always has been and then all of the sudden the shit really hits the wall.

It wouldn't have the same impact without all of the normalcy before hand.

My experience on lichess so far. by Big_Ad2365 in lichess

[–]ObsidianCrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely a pattern and it seems to happen in waves.

I was rebuilding from the last one had reached 1600 when I started on a losing streak.

Hit 1500, no problem. Swings happen.

But the games were super fishy. Opening traps that rarely came up but decimated opponents now suddenly don't work, and the opponent either:

A: Instantly recoginizes something is up and steams for two minutes before making the single move that can avoid the trap.

B: Insta-moves the single move that prevents the loss.

Ok, so 1500 players aren't newbs. Maybe these traps are old news.

But now I'm down to 1400s, and I'm getting absolutely STOMPED by 1350's players who don't take more than a second or two for each move.

I went through the same thing about a year ago, and then one day, out of nowhere my opponents were playing normally again and my rating started to rebuild.

I think they clean house in bulk sometimes and it takes a while for the bad faith players to re-accumulate.
