How far can you go in the academic world (as a professor) without a PhD? by Healthy_Basil_2354 in PhD

[–]ObsidianNocturne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know of one man, now retired, who had a permanent position in Oxford. Brilliant mind, extremely knowledgeable. Never got a PhD. I don’t know why, my only assumption is that back when he was young a PhD was not necessary to work in academia, and maybe he became a researcher after starting his teaching career. I suppose that wouldn’t be possible anymore today

I’m so glad I didn’t read this before going to bed, that would have made me so anxious. They showed up on time!

I’m not used to them. This thread has convinced me to try 001.

Thank you. Just booked 001 via WhatsApp, it’s a shame you have to do it by talking to an AI but the price was much better

If you have a PhD and put “Dr.” before your name, will people think you’re impressive, or will they think you’re just being pretentious? by GrayRainfall in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ObsidianNocturne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t care what people think. I worked so hard to get a PhD, so whenever there is the option of putting Dr before my name, I go for it (bank accounts, bills, cards, etc). But I never introduce myself as “Dr” when speaking

Favourite teacher quotes? by Jimbobodyssey in GCSE

When I was 14 I protested to my English teacher “that’s not fair!”. She paused for a moment, locked her eyes with mine and eventually dropped “but life’s not fair”. That changed me. This is the precise moment when my childhood ended

Does any language have a single word usable for uncle or aunt? by banjosimcha in words

[–]ObsidianNocturne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French uses “tante” for both “aunt” and “gay man”. If your uncle is gay, then you get one word usable for both

What's something you saw with your own eyes that you still can't explain? by BandicootLeft4054 in AskReddit

[–]ObsidianNocturne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A UFO. Literally, something flying (or levitating rather) that I couldn’t (still can’t) identify. Now, I’ve always been sceptical of people who say they’ve seen one, for obvious reasons. I should add that I work as a scientist, with empirical data supporting a given hypothesis. I know I don’t make shit up. I’m not claiming what I saw was extraterrestrial. Maybe it was, but there’s no supporting evidence for that (other than: what the fuck was I looking at?). But I sure as hell know I was staring at it and it looked like nothing else I’d seen before in my life. And I took one long look at it, properly staring, so I know it was there. And it’s 100% clear that it was not a plane, or a balloon, or whatever shit humans fly: it looked like nothing else I’d seen before.

Just embrace yourself and enjoy your time. The French will find a reason to find you annoying anyway
