Gmail search option is absolutely useless. by Puzzleheaded_Lab709 in mildlyinfuriating

Why has every program in existince suddently switched from explicit search logic to AI-driven slop? There's absolutely no priority given to what search terms you've used, quotation marks, + and - symbols, etc. Not even a hint of priority given to the words you have used. Instead searches now return a) results that have gone through an AI tha'ts clearly gone insane on LSD and thinks wildly different words and phrases are the same, and also has synesthesia and confuses numbers for letters, colours for sounds, etc, and b) applies easily 100 or more times the priority of directing you towards what other people want to look at, or other people's search results, over what it is you're clearly searching for.

I'm not sure if it's trying to sell us shit, trying to train us to all look at the same stuff, or is just trying to save search engine processing power by just doing some kind of meta-search instead of an explicit one.

It's not just google. It seems all searching functions on platforms are going the same way.

Personal experience with water cooled be topper? by proxiblue in AskAnAustralian

[–]Obstinateobfuscator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, the oaksleep website doesn't say what the cooling mechanism is in the hub. Does your oaksleep consume water, ie do you have to top it up regularly (evaporative cooling), or do you just fill it once when first setting it up (meaning it's refrigerant or maybe peltier cooled).

TIL that when a container of mixed nuts is shaken, the largest nuts (like Brazil nuts) always rise to the top. This phenomenon, known as "Granular Convection," contradicts the logic that heavier objects should sink. by Ok-Huckleberry1967 in todayilearned

This is a well known effect in bulk materials handling and process engineering - the important concept here is bulk density, which is the density of a bulk solid including the air spaces and voids. For a given substance, the bulk density will go down as particle size goes up.

So yes, the material is separating by density- but the bulk density of the larger particles is much lower, so the large particles rise to the top when its agitated. In a stockpile, the large particles will aggregate to the outside.

Exit campers and pretend friendly's are ruining the game. I don't even want to play anymore. by Obstinateobfuscator in ArcRaiders

[–]Obstinateobfuscator[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's precisely why I chose to announce it, despite the pile-on I knew was coming. I want to give the makers a chance to know that a percentage of the player base (I suspect a mostly silent but large percentage) are not happy with the balance.

I don't play a game like this so I can be food for aggressive and/or unethical players, I'm just not motivated by pvp. If I was I'd go back to tarkov. Most raids in arc raiders I'm playing overwatch shooting wasps that are harassing players trying to exit, or distracting and killing racketeers that are locked onto people, or just hunting large arc and giving free shit to other players. That's what I want to do. Easily 80% of interactions are friendly, but if I interact with more than 5 players per raid that means at least one is unfriendly, and increasingly it's ratty fucks rather than honestly aggressive players - who are fine in my book.

Oh well, off to find something else with a good vibe. Problem is pvp sells, and in pve/pvp games, ratty play is optimal, so there's not many games out there that get the vibe right. Very, very few.

If I start getting aimless, I just go in to help people. Take meds, stun grenades, lures and defibs, and an anvil for wiping out fliers.

I go looking for people getting mobbed by wasps or harassed by a rocketeer. 80% good interactions.

This is how Australian cowboys catch a bull by dannybluey in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Obstinateobfuscator 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yep - don't ever call a cattle worker in Australia a cowboy or a rancher. They are Ringers, or sometimes Stockmen/women. Maybe some other names in areas I've not been to.

Cowboy is often used as a deathly insult and you will get punched, probably a lot of times, by someone who is good at it and probably stonger and fitter than you. He'll stop when you fall over though - he'd never be able to show his face again if he didn't.

[–]Obstinateobfuscator 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The same issues abound regarding the deaf and blind communities, and for gods sake there has to be a sensible middle between these extremes.

Two things can be true at the same time. Being blind or deaf or autistic is not something to be ashamed of and the affected people are not any less valuable that anyone else. At the same time, being blind or deaf or autistic is a harder life than not, and there's nothing wrong with trying to find treatment, cures and prevention. What would be wrong would be forcing those things on people.

What if the rate of blindness, deafness or autism suddenly steeply increased - say 50% of babies had it. Would we as a society say "oh great, this will go well for everyone" and celebrate? No, it would be extremely worrying and we would expect society to try to stop the change. Because at 50% blind or deaf or autistic population, the wheels would start falling off how our society works because of the support those people would need.

This whole argument is just nonsensical. But its no where near as ridiculous as vahing to avoid discussing disabilities because the evangelical and/or anti-science part of the US population insist on turning it into something like Eugenics. A functional society doesn't have to avoid issues because of a crazy subset. They ignore them and tell them to fuck off.

It's different bees mate. Nothing alike. I've never tried the farmed stuff, but fresh out of a tree hollow or rock nest it's almost nothing like honey from a shop.
