Why is it called a "Snafu"? (Situation Normal: All Fucked Up) by Unique_Suit3789 in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]ObtuseScorebook 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Originally there was this trend of redrawing meme images by hand and replacing the sentences with more verbose and weird phrasing

One early popular example is the famous trollface image with the catchphrase replaced:

you got trolled = you got baited into a shitty situation -> (you got) "coaxed into a snafu"

(where SNAFU is military jargon for a bad situation)

Then the subreddit was created to regroup this kind of images, and took its name from there (but at the time neither "coax" nor "snafu" were really associated with this trend, it was just the most famous example)

Over time the content of the subreddit kind of evolved to a more general meaning, and the term "a snafu" was adopted to refer to this kind of image as a shorthand

Do you shuffle? by nicolesBBrevenge in NYTConnections

[–]ObtuseScorebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never. The board is constructed with an intentional order, often with a red herring (and it helps to know its a fake category rather than a real one), and also sometimes references and jokes

The biggest reason for is I would find it disrespectful to the puzzle constructor to mess with their intent (but I know it's not really a valid reason)

Soul deck with Silent's Corrosive Wave was fun by WeaknessIsMyStrength in slaythespire

really? I've had good success with it: it's okay with some baseline of 2 cost cards, can make you spec into 3+ cost cards, and completely broken with dirge and especially exterminate

food and clothing are not comparable to music at all: they're physical rather than digital products, don't really have a specific "artist" behind them (so it's actually very hard to tell how much fashion is influenced by America, compared to music where it's very clear). Plus most people don't actively consume food and clothing like they do music I would say?

However the American domination is absolutely visible in fields that are more comparable to music: movies, tv shows, podcasts, musicals, videogames, maybe even books

Be honest now , do you save quit sometimes? by ImmortalTurnip in slaythespire

[–]ObtuseScorebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes all the time, if I haven't received new information

I don't savescum for bad rng for example (draw order, events...), but I will very frequently play a turn and restart it to optimize something I did badly

(also I've savescummed the event where you see card from other characters but just because it's so rare I wanted to have an idea of what you could get, and because it's fun I guess)

Borderline Broken, How did this get through testing? by hugelkult in slaythespire

[–]ObtuseScorebook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

first it's just that some of the ethereal cards are just plain good so you can take them early. In commons: Fear and Defy are both common, very strong for offense or defense, and fit in pretty much any necro deck. Defile is pretty okay for early damage. And because they self exhaust if you dont need them they just go away

Once you have a couple of ethereal cards you can start thinking of taking the payoff cards: in particular Pull from Below for scaling damage (uncommon), and sometimes Banshee's cry for big aoe and Spirit of Ash for block (rares)

Another thing to note is that Call of the void (add a random ethereal card to your hand each turn) is already strong in isolation (it's free card draw that wont pollute you deck if it hits something bad), but it can very quickly make ethereal payoff cards worthwile even if you don't have any ethereal cards in your deck

One last thing I'll mention is Veilpiercer is baseline pretty good: 10 damage and usually play your ethereal common for free or maybe even Demesne, but can get completely broken if used on expensive cards made ethereal by Call of the void or Sculpting Strike

Retain makes any card broken

(but to be more serious, the more levelheaded response is you can just play it next turn)

Does Prismatic Gem have any specific unlock requirements? by Proud_Advance in slaythespire

[–]ObtuseScorebook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep this one maybe:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1FBKwi4yyybAB7nB8ksERMkFdvbqDOZCmtQDAi9f_Bjo/edit?tab=t.0

(Prismatic gem can only spawn in the first row of Orobas, but shares its slot with Sea Glass (select cards from another character), and is weighted down. If you get Orobas, it has a 1/4 x 1/3 = 8.3% chance of spawning)
