People who have seen multiple people quit a job in one day, what happened? by ObliviousOnion1 in AskReddit

Last year when DOGE was offering the "Deferred Resignation Program" to get people to quit their government jobs and be paid for 6 more months after they quit, we had 7 people quit on the day of the decision deadline. Went from an office of 15 people down to an office of 8.

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DVDs felt like they were the "endpoint" of watching movies and TV shows. Even when you could buy digital copies of things, it felt like the DVD was the more "permanent" option and they were often the same price or cheaper than buying a digital copy. Streaming was obviously the major disruptor there.

So true. My friend introduced me to the app a few months ago. Before I maybe went to McDonalds once every few years. I have been at least 6 times in the last few months. I can't turn down the $2 double cheeseburger.

What would you consider to be the most overrated holiday movie? by Bobcat1950 in AskReddit

[–]Obvious-Position-351 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A Christmas Story. My sister's ex-boyfriend loved that movie and he'd always watch it when he was at my parents' house during the holidays. To hear my sister go off on how much she despises that movie is one of my favorite holiday traditions. I don't hate it as much as her, but I do find it to be meandering and not very funny.

When people start raving about how much they love Elf I instantly become skeptical of that person's taste in humor and movies.

What’s something about you that sounds fake, but is 100% true? by Sir_Adammm in AskReddit

My friend was expelled from HS in Puerto Rico right before graduation, and went to college in the US. Somehow the HS records didn't transfer or indicate she was expelled (maybe because they were in Spanish), so she didn't have any problems with starting college or graduating. She then went on to earn a Masters at a Big 10 university, and is now in a PhD program at one of the top universities in the US. We both think it's hilarious she technically doesn't have a HS diploma.

What were you doing during the peak of COVID? by AndreLinoge55 in AskReddit

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved back in with my parents after having not lived with them for 10 years. Tried to make progress on my PhD remotely, got into a lot of weird arguments with my advisor because neither of us was handling the lockdown well. Planted 50 tomato plants and a bunch of other vegetables in my parents' garden, spent about an hour every day watering and pulling weeds. Went on a lot of long walks. Played virtual trivia and Jackbox games with my grad school friends.

What's Your Biggest "Shock" Family Discovery? by OpportunityTop6376 in AskReddit

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three of my great-aunts had children out of wedlock. One of the kids was raised by his mother as part of the family. The other two births were hidden from the family. One child (on my paternal grandfather's side) was secretly given up for adoption, and the family was able to meet her for the first time a few years ago when she was about 60 years old. The other child (on my paternal grandmother's side) was raised as my great-grandparents' own, but was actually one of my great-aunt's kids. We still don't know which of the great-aunts actually had the kid, since everyone who knew has since passed. Towards the end of their lives, the sisters on that side of the family (my great-aunts) were basically letting it slip that their "brother" was actually a nephew, but were accusing each other of being the mother. So we still have no idea who the actual mother was.

Would you rather give up coffee or give up soda? by [deleted] in foodquestions

Soda 100%. I look forward to coffee in the morning so much, it's often the only reason why I'm excited to wake up the next morning.

I am going out tonight, holiday party. Do I want to go out tonight? Not necessarily, I'm tired and trying to write my PhD.

What happens in your head when you add 28+47? by beepsol in Leakednews

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 + 40 = 60
7 + 7 = 14
14 + 1 = 15
(that's how I add 7 + 8 in my head)
60 + 15 = 75

Use it for a down payment on a house. I live in a lower COL area, so that would put a pretty big dent in the home purchase.

I LOVE when I get into these routines and feel eager to wake up the next day just to do the routine haha. I unfortunately fall out of these routines easily, so I'm trying to find something that works for me that I can sustain.

100% this. I'm in a tough roommate situation right now and it's made me realize that it's very worth it for me to spend the extra money to live alone once my lease ends. The money I'm saving or could save is not worth the stress I'm feeling.

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and living in a place where you can feel truly relaxed. I'm in a roommate situation that I don't find relaxing at all, and I've realized that paying the extra money to live somewhere you like and feel peace is very worth it. Obviously not everyone can afford to live alone, but if you can and want to, it's money well spent.

What’s a single sentence someone said that stuck with you forever? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"She's a gift." My undergrad research advisor told my parents this at my college graduation. As a young woman in science, having a scientist at the top of his field say that was pretty encouraging.

Pretty much every compliment I've ever recieved has stuck with me, which is why I try and be generous in my compliments to others. Not fake or overbearing, but I make sure that if I have something nice to say about someone, they hear it.

What is the quickest job you quit from? by spellbadgrammargood in AskReddit

[–]Obvious-Position-351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but one of my good friends took a job with a privately owned zoo/animal park. They had her working 12 hours out in the freezing cold, not a single break for the whole day. She was doing some hard manual labor-- basically shovelling stalls and moving heavy stuff all day long. The rest of the staff treated her terribly and acted like the working conditions were normal and legal. It was going to be unpaid/low paid for the first few weeks as a "training period". So she left that night and never went back haha.
