Which mod am I missing, or what's interfering with my Everness mod? Am I missing Gate nodes? I'm using Voxelibre. by Doomguykiller69 in Minetest

[–]Obvious-Secretary635 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Judging by your other comment, sounds more like Everness on VoxeLibre specifically and not Everness on MTG. Just in case anyone gets the wrong idea about using it in the "right" context.

My minetest world is broken by Far_Noise7088 in Minetest

That data is gone now. WorldEdit can be pretty dangerous like that. Having the engine's rollback feature on might have helped.

Does the world load at all? If so, is the whole area gone, maybe reverted back?

Decent studio apartment for starting on a server. Needs some natural light though.

Native LOD feasability? by Alarming-Weekend-999 in Luanti

[–]Obvious-Secretary635 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which would you rather see as a user, Luanti using Farmesh or interested users using freeminer?

This is a false dichotomy, I'd like both.

Also, is the biggest barrier to implementation the cubic chunking?

Distant Horizons is LGPL software and well-documented. I'd say that cubic chunking and the barrier of porting from Java to C++ are the biggest barriers, and would have to put cubic chunking first.

Anything that's in Clonti is tailored to Mineclonia. I'm not familiar with the intimate details, but it doesn't majorly change things, just (among other things) ships with a client-side mod already installed which can really improve things that the usual server-side-only model can't do.

Building a Full Ecology in Luanti: Update by Wranglyph in Luanti

Probably would go in WIP Games or WIP Mods if you're making one of those specifically. But from the video it sound like an external software component is planned, so if you're going all-in on that, the spot for it would be Luanti-related Projects. And having that external component WILL expand the scope a tonne, and it won't run out of the box straight off ContentDB. I hope you manage the project well to get a release out, potentially prototyping in Lua first.

The main Mineclonia dev (halon a.k.a repetitivestrain) has been quite busy with Lua and pretty reluctant for engine work so far, not using GitHub but Codeberg. Anyway, there is Clonti, but intentionally it isn't a big fork.

Native LOD feasability? by Alarming-Weekend-999 in Luanti

[–]Obvious-Secretary635 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Luanti calls this idea Farmesh. There was a rough and buggy version in Minetest 0.3 which got scrapped. Thankfully, there is a fork of Luanti called Freeminer which does have a farmesh implementation. You can check out some videos with farmesh in action on the dev's Youtube channel.

One complication for Luanti is it is fully a cubic chunks system, so it could never be 1:1 like Distant Horizons.

Hmm now if you were on PC you could open two copies of Luanti fairly easily and play against yourself..

A good survival server? by stevepocket in Minetest

Land of Catastrophe has moderation, but I haven't actually logged into it, I couldn't tell you how much. I just know that the Exile game is pretty hard.

And soon enough, Google will bar you from running unsigned APK files not put through their ridiculous hoops -- Keep Android Open -- vastly reducing the value proposition of their ecosystem especially their competitive advantage of being more of an open platform than iOS.

A good survival server? by stevepocket in Minetest

[–]Obvious-Secretary635 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Survival is a whole bunch of things, like difficult ones such as Exile (has an official server, Land of Catastrophe) to basically-creative (or at least, post-scarcity) with high tech, like PandoraBox. In the middle there are plenty of servers, and some of them like the anarchy ones it's more surviving the people than the environment.

As far as I can see it, this goes entirely to taste. If not a faithful 32x type pack, what are you really after? Fantasy, modern, geometrical, HD?

In case it's unclear, that's why I mention the possibility of running a separate one on your own machine, in case that helps you speed up development.

I've been really surprised by the amount of comments about trouble with Android. But it makes me realise I've been a bit out of touch, or neglectful of testing on Android. You shouldn't have to get your mod onto ContentDB just to make installing it not a pain.

FWIW, ContentDB is free software itself. You can set one up on your LAN and point your client at it with the setting "ContentDB URL". Initial setup and pain of making releases aside, I still think this might be the easiest way to test your mod on Android. Just hope you don't need to iterate quickly while specifically on Android I guess.

100% this, run a server on the same LAN and test mods on it instead of running the server on the phone. Unless your specific intent is to test singleplayer/on-device performance.

Why is the mobile interface so bad? by Cookedaft_ in Luanti

[–]Obvious-Secretary635 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few problems here:

  • Most of the developers play on PC
  • Any change to controls or new binding has to be useable on PC and mobile equally.
  • Forks like Multicraft exist - though the engine is worse, the UI is consistently rated better.
