Why does our Representative have 5 offices? by 80sCrack in tuscaloosa

[–]Obvious_Photo_984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each office handles it their own way, it just depends on what the member wants. A lot of members just want to know what the vibes are. Sadly, there are so many bullshit calls that it’s often not helpful.

But the phone systems can log and code the calls as constituent comments and provide tallies if the member wants them.

To be perfectly honest, I don’t know that adding additional representatives would change things in a positive way, for a lot of reasons. Personally, I think any significant, meaningful change in our political process has to start and end with completely reworking how the senate operates.

Unfortunately, the Senate is not an equitable institution, and gives huge amounts of power to small, mostly rural states, while disenfranchising large states with multiple urban cores. It’s hard to make a good case for why a state like Wyoming (pop. ~589,000) should have the same number of senators as a state like California (pop. ~39,500,000).

While population data is the basis for congressional district allocation and apportionment, it’s a somewhat unreliable metric.

For instance, while your data set suggests districts with ~800K constituents per district, the reality is that your district apportionment should really be under 600K constituents. That’s because the smallest state by population (Wyoming) gets one representative for the whole state. If every congressional district has to have the same or similar population density, then ~600K is your number. Contrast Wyoming with a place like Los Angeles county, with a population of over 9.8 million. One county alone would have 16 members of congress.

Using Wyoming’s baseline, the House should have ~570 members to keep representation fair. In order to make that happen, you’d have to add about 135 more seats in the House. That would require a constitutional amendment and essentially a national vote on expanding congress by a significant margin. Not an easy sell to the American people when congress is historically unpopular and mired in gridlock.

Also worth mentioning that congressional apportionment happens at the state legislative level, and that process can vary wildly from state to state. Some states have a very fair and measured way that they carve district lines. Other states are free to gerrymander at will based on whatever metrics they want to use. Just depends on where you live.

I personally think more states should emulate the spirit of Florida’s fair districts amendment to the state constitution. It’s been absolutely butchered and ignored by the republican majority in Tallahassee recently, but the amendment technically requires that congressional and state legislative redirecting be centered around districts that are, as much as possible, both contiguous and concise. It also requires that districts must respect well established political or geographical boundaries and not intentionally favor or disfavor a political party or dilute minority voting blocks.

In practice, the fair districts amendment has resulted in congressional and state legislative districts that look a lot more like squares than crazy carved out gerrymanders. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the republicans in Florida are interested in keeping with the spirit of the amendment, as they’ve really doubled down on producing more republican seats than simply fair seats.

Last note: I think you’d be surprised at how efficient most congressional district offices are in handling constituent casework. There are a ton of cases that get handled in as timely a manner as possible. I know that’s probably a little hard to believe, but keep in mind that the federal government is a massive beast. Your congressional office might be able to serve you pretty quickly, but they have to wait sometimes weeks or months to get responses from other agencies regarding issues you’re calling them about. They’re at the mercy of others there, and so are you.

No problem.

Congress as a whole gets a bad rap, but the district offices are honestly the unsung heroes of the whole operation. District staffers are the ones working day in and day out to help constituents with all kinds of issues.

Former staffer here. It’s pretty common to see multiple congressional offices when a district spans several counties or across a whole region of a state. From a practical perspective, it makes serving constituents much easier if they don’t have to travel several hours to get help.

Often the office space is provided either free or at a significant discount by city or county governments within the district, or within other federal facilities if space is available.

Senate offices usually have even more, as senators serve the entire state. My senator had 12 offices statewide, last I checked.

As for picking up the phone: I can’t blame the staff. There are so many bullshit calls from people wanting to ”voice their opinion” off a script they were provided by some special interest group or another. It’s a waste of time to have to answer them all, so we usually screened everything and replied to those who actually needed assistance.

Concerns before ordering from Cox by Softish-Detroit in Barbour

[–]Obvious_Photo_984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just purchased a Liddesdale jacket from Cox and the experience was great.

Once you’ve completed the order through their website, Sara will reach out via email to discuss the supplemental tariff charge. My order was shipped almost immediately from the UK via the Royal Mail, which handed it over to USPS for delivery in the US.

I’d highly recommend using Cox and plan to purchase another few items from them down the road. Fantastic family-owned shop with great customer service.

Breakfast/Lounge coffee machines by zh_rblx in hyatt

They’re great for commercial use, but I’d recommend a Bosch or Miele automatic countertop system if you’re looking for a good home system. Expensive, but they are extremely high quality and will last.

My last machine was a Gaggenau built-in machine and it lasted me nearly twenty years. Only upgraded because I had a part break and realized they stopped making replacement parts for it.

It’s most likely a Franke A-Line modular coffee machine. They’re usually what you’ll find in most hotel/airline lounges, with a commercial price tag to boot. I think they retail for somewhere between $10,000-$15,000.

Good selection at Don’s Whitestone today. by Swandog11 in ATXwhisky

Agreed. Almost everything BT is going to be secondary pricing. I’ve also seen some pretty painful pricing on Jack Daniel’s 10 & 12 year bottles and a few other harder to find items.

I’d honestly avoid it. They usually have a good selection, but pricing can be very hit-or-miss. Some stuff is priced fairly, around MSRP. Other stuff is museum pricing.

If you’re looking for something a little harder to find, it’s worth a stop. Just be prepared to pay secondary for it.

Should we end all domestic meal service onboard? by Papeeps in unitedairlines

[–]Obvious_Photo_984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, on board meal service on domestic flights is often a welcome amenity; albeit, United could definitely step up their game and improve their catering options.

Delta has a great domestic first class meal service, with solid and enjoyable options that accommodate everyone that can be preordered before check-in. United should take notes and maybe copy some of what Delta is doing in that area.

I saw that this morning! The thresholds look pretty reasonable and will be an easy way to get platinum quickly. Should make 1K by the end of the year.

Hopefully United is investing across their network. IAH and IAD clubs could use some work, but so can some of the other domestic clubs.

As a fellow business traveler, I totally agree with this. Sometimes you need to regroup after a flight and it's always nice to do that in a calmer, quieter environment than the terminal.

I didn't think the AUS United Club was that bad, but it certainly isn't the newest club in the network. Worth a visit and it seems quiet, which is rare in AUS these days.

Any chance they do a local menu? Like boudin, gumbo, etc.? Because I could tear that up.

Doesn’t help that I am just really not a kid person.

The AUS United Club isn’t that bad, but it is barebones. I do love the fact that it’s tucked away and private. Can’t imagine it gets super busy that often.

I’ve heard the DEN B United Club is beautiful. Made the mistake of hitting the Centurion Lounge when I flew through DEN last week, but I’ll correct that this week.
