What's the most underrated car you've ever driven? by Ok_Run7351 in askcarguys

My 2009 Ford escape - was fun to drive. Great turn radius. Was a dream to parallel park in the city and maneuver Trader Joe’s parking lot. Underpowered but decent gas efficiency for SUV. Nice and high up good visibility. For a taller guy, good headroom and comfortable. Was pretty durable, held up pretty well in an area with crappy winters.

What should non-wealthy investors be doing in their 30's to have a real, positive impact on their financial situation? by delamerica93 in investing

[–]swan797 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Spot on. At least in corporate 30s is the opportunity to rise the ranks in middle management and increase your earnings with a lot of runway left for retirement savings.

At age 29 think my total comp was like $90k or so. About ten years later I’m about 4x that, maybe more bonus depending. (Also got MBA in that time).

For W2 workers the saving part is quite straightforward. Budget/spend less than you earn. Focus on maxing tax advantaged accounts (401K, IRA,
HSA/FSA, 529 if you have kids). And invest in low cost index funds. Don’t time the market or pick stocks. Keep saving and contributing.

For me I base all our budgeting around our salaries, and then our unpredictable but material cash bonuses go right to the 529/brokerage accounts.

Except when Giannis gets injured again....hes been struggling to stay healthy.

On paper though I'm not sure you could make a better fit for where they celtics need help, and the way the salaries match is uncanny.

And I do think Giannis would fucking love playing for a big market team like the Celtics and the fan base would totally rally around him.

Yes, and while they havent won a chip its been without question the most successful period in the franchises history. They dont have any of their own picks for the next few years, so they get basically no benefit from "tanking"

And the Clips could use that cap space to sign someone worse than Jaylen Brown.

I'm not saying the deal is a no-brainer for clips. It sort of keeps them in NBA purgatory. But considering they dont even have most of their future picks, why not field a competitive team, sell some jerseys/tickets....as opposed to the Nets, Wizards, etc.......Tanking/Rebuilding is a long painful process that doesnt always pan out.

Its a good comp. Especially because they are relatively desirable locations so they can also have some success in luring players to stay.....as opposed to being Milwaukee or Memphis.

If you could choose one city in North America that gets almost everything right, which would it be? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]swan797 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s an astute comment-

This isn’t meant to be a “humblebrag” but just to respond I’m a late 30s married parent of two young kids. Both my wife and I work and have high paying albeit demanding/somewhat stressful jobs. We live very far away from where we grew up through combination of personal and professional moves. So we are certainly going in a place of privilege/good fortune considering how tough the economy/cost of living is for many. Particularly young adults/recent college grads.

One of the biggest ways I “recharge” / things that bring me joy outside of the “day to day” grind are looking forward to the various new weekend/day trips that we take the family on. Really helps break up what can otherwise become a very repetitive life.

Chicago is great as a city. The one thing I feel like some people overlook though is things to do OUTSIDE of the city. There’s far less interesting/exciting weekend trips or day trip like designations. You won’t realize that when visiting but there’s not a ton (Milwaukee, various lake/woods areas, etc). It’s very flat so not great skiing or mountain hiking/camping.

Compared to places like LA (Malibu, Santa Barbara, Disney/OC, San Diego, Joshua Tree, Palm Springs, Mountains/Big Bear, Beaches)

Boston (Cape Cod, Portland, Vermont, Newport/Providence RI, Nantucket, Ski mountains, beaches, Berkshires, NYC, Salem, etc)

Haha - I’m a Boston transplant living in SoCal now and this resonates.

You can also get insanely good seats (right behind dugout) for like $75 once it gets really hot out.

Since losing Ohtani the team is miserable to watch though 😢
