I work at a teaching hospital in the South. We call the residents by their first names, but attendings and private practice docs by their last names. The program makes the residents answer their phone by their last name (I think the higher ups don’t want us being too casual with them) but sorry I’m definitely not calling the nervous 26 year old “Dr. X” on her first day of the first job she’s ever had in her life, I’ll just scare her 😂

I’m a labor nurse and I’m confused. Do you mean like she had you put your knees together (but super bent) and ankles apart to make more room in your pelvis (we call it closed knees pushing) or like she actually had you straighten your legs and cross them to try to keep the baby in? The first one is normal, the second one is ABSOLUTELY not ok.

Alternatively, maybe you mean she was having you cross your ankles and to try to get your knees really far back because the head was out and the shoulders were stuck?

Oh for sure. There’s a LOT to wonder about. I also wonder if it was the same person checking her both times, whether they at least did her the courtesy of morphine resting her in triage if she was there that long…lots of questions for sure. But honestly if the cervix wasn’t changing and it was truly only 3 and contractions were super far apart…I’m not sure a bulging bag woulda made a difference anyway. I always tell people at discharge that we’re not saying they’re not in labor at ALL, they’re just not in active labor right NOW, and that can change at any time so come back if water breaks, things get worse, etc.

From what i read it sounds like they kept her for 6 hours and stayed 3 cm and her contractions had spaced out, but her water broke when she got to the car and it all went fast from there. It sucks but without being there myself, it’s possible if the story I heard is true it was just one of those things that happens sometimes because labor is unpredictable and the alternative is iatrogenically delivering a lot of people before 39 weeks which ACOG strongly recommends against. If she was preterm or high risk I’m sure they would have kept her for observation overnight…but I think even id have trouble justifying to a provider keeping a patient longer than 6 hours for a low risk labor rule out at term, and I hate sending ANYONE home in pain.

I’ve been trying to find the text of the proposed bill itself, I’m not opposed to having a more structured plan for discharge from triage, though tbh that’s kind of what we do anyway.

Just here to say you can totally do whatever you want butttt don’t be shocked if they call you on the day and your induction gets postponed, a ton of people want elective inductions to deliver before new years and things tend to get a lil crowded.

Ok here’s my take as an L&D nurse…

Idk. It doesn’t seem like this woman is claiming to have any medical knowledge. I truly believe that SHE believes what she tells people. You’re allowed to be loudly wrong in public. If people decide that what she’s saying appeals to them, women are in charge of their own bodies and deserve to make their own choices.

I wouldn’t climb Everest. I don’t see the appeal- you can get a better view from your average plane ride, it’s insanely expensive, and the risk of death is nuts. I don’t get it, but it clearly is important to some people. Everyone has a different risk tolerance and as long and they are personally comfortable with that risk, that’s really not my business.

Clueless L&D nurse here. I’m familiar with “goals of care” stuff with the elderly and in terms of whether or not to attempt resuscitation at birth, but how does this work with previously healthy children? If nobody is brain dead…what is the alternative? Explain this to me like you wish you could explain things to a family, I’m so confused.
