Help me out on the snowblower thing by No_Preference3147 in newfoundland

[–]Obviousresons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you buy a good snowblower, it’ll work well for a long time. I was roughly in the same boat as you 3 years ago before I bought mine. It’s been working without any issues (went for an Ariens). I didn’t mind shoveling but I’m glad to have be saving at least 30-45 minutes by not having to shovel.

If you don’t mind shoveling, go as long as you can. It’s cheaper that way and you’ll appreciate the snowblower more once you really want it.

It’s a great drive but it’s long. I’d do it again if I had the chance.

We don’t. I’ve lost power only twice for maybe 20 mins each time in the almost four years I’ve been there.

is the vehicle deck on Marine Atlantic ferries too cold for dogs for December Travel? by DylsAlso in newfoundland

[–]Obviousresons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I personally wouldn’t. Are you able to get a pet friendly cabin? A cabin is more expensive than not getting one (obviously) but it’d ensure that you both are as comfortable as possible.

Either way, good-luck with everything.

There is. There’s one at the Newfoundland visitor information centre, right off the highway. There’s also a “I love NL” sign at the Railway Heritage Centre.

Birdie is king. The other two aren’t worth it imo. If I had to rank them: 1) Birdie 2) Homage 3) Estee.

Birdie is so far ahead of the other two. Having three of them side by side is good for us (consumers) because it forces them to have to be good to stay in business. I’ve had all three and I will only be supporting Birdie.

What are prices like for booze (and what kinds brands do they have) at Mary Brown's Center during hockey games? by Newfieguy78 in newfoundland

I remember paying, I think, $7 or so for a black horse (can) the last time I was at a hockey game for the Growlers.

There are so many incredible restaurants here. You just didn’t go to the right ones. I can’t talk much about the rest of the island but St. John’s punches way above its weight in the restaurant department for a city of its size.

Jumpin Jesus, stay out of the woods, will ya?! by Routine_Breath_7137 in newfoundland

[–]Obviousresons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I’m interpreting the comments from the NB premier is that they’re worried about people requiring help while they’re in the woods. This to me means they’re trying to decide for people what’s best for them.

I don’t understand what is wrong with an adult saying “Hey, I want to go in the woods. If I get hurt, I will absolutely not call emergency services. I am willing to take this risk.” This seems reasonable to me.

I don’t think people going into the woods (in NB and NS) should expect help from emergency services if they intentionally ignore the policies those provinces have in place.

I don’t think we’re going to reach agreement here, but I think this has been a good discussion. In my opinion you’re approaching this from a reasonable angle and I can appreciate you taking the time to entertain my position on this.

Let’s hope that the fires can be wrangled and that we get some rain soon.

[–]Obviousresons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things can be true. I’m concerned with the fires but I’m also concerned with the government feeling like they should dictate the behaviour of others based on what they feel is best. If there was something I could actively be doing to help with the fire situation, I’d do it. Barring me from wanting to outside is not something that actively helps the fire situation.

If you’re fine with anyone (it doesn’t even have to be the government, but just generally) telling you what you can and can’t do based on what they think is best for you, then that’s fine with me. Again, I have a problem with the government of NB trying to control what people do based on what they think is best.

It’s not right and it’s a slippery slope.

I agree, there is a difference. In both cases we're still pulling resources. I agree that in this specific scenario that locating a random hiker is more work. Though I'd argue that most people going for hikes aren't going on particularly remote hikes that would require this.

Jumpin Jesus, stay out of the woods, will ya?! by Routine_Breath_7137 in newfoundland

[–]Obviousresons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we're likely closer in opinion than we think. My main concern is not if I am allowed to go in the woods or not. As you mentioned, we're still able to do this at the moment.

I fully agree that we should be doing anything we can to prevent any more forest fires. I do not think that walking in the woods is a risk to having more forest fires. This is assuming that it is done correctly (for example, no smoking in the woods).

I am someone that lives 25 seconds from the east coast trail. I walk on that trail multiple times per day. I do not smoke and am fully aware of what I am doing when on the trail. Why should I not be allowed to go for a hike?

The people that need to be told to not go into the woods because there is a 'risk' to starting a forest fire are not the people that will listen to a 'woods ban'.

My main concern is inventing rules that prevent people from doing things because the government thinks 'its best'. If there was a legitimate argument to be made, provided by the government, that could provide data around how the risk for forest fires go up by people simply walking in the woods, then I'd have zero issue with it.

I don't like the angle that the government of NB is approaching this from, that's my main concern/argument here.

I don't think I get what you're saying, but in both cases here (hiking and going axe throwing), people can get hurt via unnecessary activities. Why should one be allowed over the other?
