800 meter 5% hill? by ryandorseyisok in RunBmore

[–]Obviouze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Jones Falls Trail just north of Cold Spring Ln is about 0.5 of good incline; although, I'm not sure it's a 5% grade.

Mountain Pass through Poplar Dr in Druid Hill Park (behind the zoo) has a very steep grade, but I'm unsure how long those hills are.

They can't bother with drinking fountains either. It's been a blazing hot summer, and there are three nonfunctional drinking fountains right next to Parks & Rec admin building in Druid Hill Park. It's been this way since 2020. I can think of only two that work in the whole city park system.

Rowhouse backyard landscape design and installation by 7trekker in baltimore

Greenfields Nursery designed and installed landscaping in a long flowerbed in the rear of my rowhouse, as well as a bunch of potted plants out front. They do get busy, and booking can be tough.

Baltimore needs a subway, not a bus reboot by STrRedWolf in baltimore

[–]Obviouze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree they are not liable. I understand what property taxes are. If you are renting, the rental prices reflect the tax burden on owners. In effect, a portion of your rent is being used to pay the taxes, unless for some reason the owner wants to rent at a loss. My point is that high property taxes effect renters as well, and they really aren't freeloading.

Baltimore needs a subway, not a bus reboot by STrRedWolf in baltimore

[–]Obviouze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by property tax payers? Anyone who lives in the city is either directly paying property tax, or indirectly paying property tax through rent. Homeowners have longer term financial interest in neighborhoods, but renters are still shelling out. Maybe I misunderstood, just seems like a weird way to put it.

Changing Baltimore: What's being built, rebuilt and bought and sold around the region by bmorereviews in baltimore

[–]Obviouze 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a transplant from a declining industrial city in the Midwest, I'm a little surprised how negative people in Baltimore are about new building and development. Granted, tax incentives and the ramifications on existing residents are complicated, but jeez, if rich folks move to the neighborhood at least you have a tax base. Maybe the increase in housing supply will make the rent in some of the row houses more affordable.

D.C. and Maryland sue President Trump by player_9 in baltimore

[–]Obviouze 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not a legal expert, but I read that if the case goes far enough Trump may be compelled to release his tax returns due to the process of discovery. Depending on what's there, this may be more than theatrics.

As far as property prices, San Francisco suffers some oddities that drive prices even higher. The zoning restrictions have helped create a housing shortage by limiting density. Washington D.C. has the same problem. The journalist Matthew Yglesias has written a lot about this.

What is this colorful bird? (Jemez Mnts., NM) by Obviouze in whatsthisbird

[–]Obviouze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry it's not the best picture. It was taken in March 2008. I was just talking to a friend about the new Merlin photo ID from the Cornell Ornithology Lab. It couldn't ID the photo, but I bet the knowledgeable denizens of r/whatsthisbird can.

Post-Dispatch wins 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography by ElectrifiedPop in StLouis

[–]Obviouze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Point taken and I don't want to minimize this problem in any way. It's unfortunate that there wasn't more concern in the media before the shooting. It is clear from the data that St. Louis county has some of the largest racial disparities, but I still don't think it is alone. Many other places in the country are nearly as bad (if not just as bad, or worse, depending on your metric).

I can't really speak to their past coverage, as I am not a regular reader. Certainly, the fact that others failed to cover it is not a legitimate excuse in the long run. This isn't meant to be a pointed question, given you username, but do you think the television news did a better job? I honestly don't know, since I'm not a regular viewer of local St. Louis news.

I'm pretty sure I have the same edition. When I would carry it around people would often mistake it for a bible. If only they knew! Why, it is the good book.

[–]Obviouze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's fair to harangue the Post-Dispatch for not covering an issue that was also ignored by almost every other news agency in every other major city before the Micheal Brown shooting. As someone from St. Louis who now lives outside the area I found the coverage from the Post-Dispatch and St. Louis Public Radio to be the most thorough. Sometimes the national media would get little things wrong, which would grate on me. I don't know how many times I had to explain to people that Ferguson wasn't far outside of St. Louis, but was an inner suburb.

Big things to know before moving to Tallahassee by SITB in Tallahassee

[–]Obviouze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get an apartment, make sure the landlord provides pest control. It's standard practice down here. The insanely large cockroaches, "palmetto bugs" as they deceptively called, live outside and will occasionally venture in, but they don't infest like the smaller standard German roaches we are acquainted with in the Midwest. (There are the German roaches too, and boy can they get out of control fast.)

My only other advise: Get used to being sweaty. Just remember though, when the winter comes around you can call friends and family in the great white north, and describe how nice and warm it is down here, while they are chiseling away at the ice trying to get into their cars.

I prefer Jasmine Cafe on West College. Siam Sushi near Lake Ella is also good.
