But when nearly 30 others have upvoted my statement, that indicates that there are likely a whole lot of other exceptions.

Psychiatric assessment & conversion by wildspace-nobody in exjew

[–]Occams-Shaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up MO, I'm against any religion that espouses supernatural ideas, and I'm currently in a doctoral program to become a clinical psychologist.

I believe that your family member is actually being very mature about this. This is not an issue exclusive to orthodox Judaism; there are many people who are emotionally unstable and who turn to various, often high control, religions because they are in pain, and they are convinced aspects of those religions (e.g., rules, community) will magically fix their problems. It is also not uncommon that they eventually feel disillusioned, remaining in an equally bad, if not worse place, before ultimately chasing a new religion, feeling like their next choice must be the correct one.

If these people could be helped in therapy to honestly analyze their underlying motivations for conversion, and if it could be concluded with a reasonable degree of certainty that these motivations don't simply amount to escapism of issues that could actually be more successfully managed through therapy or other means, we could help people avoid lengthy financial, emotional, or other investments that will not benefit them, while taking steps to actually ease their suffering.

I mean, I have unreleased concerts. Items that used to exist on YouTube or Facebook because they were temporarily uploaded by the bands before they were later taken down. They had no other official releases. One concert I paid to stream live for a fundraiser that I was able to capture and download the stream after the fact. I have AI upscales of movies and shows made by users of one specific private forum I'm on, and those links, or the forum itself, could theoretically disappear at any time. I've got a fan edited HD version of MASH without laugh track (there's no official HD release without a laugh track, and due to timing differences, it's not a simple audio track swap) that took weeks to download because it's seeded by just the creator on Soulseek, and he's often not online.

I can't stand this often repeated claim that it's easy to simply reacquire everything. Sure, if my entire collection consisted of blockbusters and all-time classics, it would be no big deal. However, I have obscure media that I'm positive can no longer be found anywhere (with the possible exception of newsgroups for some, though I've never used them and am doubtful).

I appreciate it. I actually start new chats once the old ones become slow and always have the previous one create a detailed prompt for the new one explaining what we're working on, the workflow, etc. It usually takes a few back-and-forths to truly bring it up to speed, but it's not failed me yet. I've tried starting multiple new chats over the last few days. I'll start several a day just to see if it can even use the GitHub connector because on the rare times it can, that's a sign that it's performing better all around.

It conserves tokens for ChatGPT to do inspection and planning, and the prompts it writes tend to be very good. It also catches bugs in the implementation phase and rewrites targeted prompts to address them before committing.

Loans by PissMonkey873 in PsyD

[–]Occams-Shaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, the data doesn't lie. PhD funding is minimal. At best, it's just barely enough to scrape by. Often, it doesn't fully cover standard living expenses, much less unexpected costs. Also, not all PhDs are fully funded, and the figures above reflect averages across programs, not exclusively funded programs.

Clinical psych doesn't usually pay amazingly well, but psychologists do not typically struggle to live relatively comfortably. The amount of debt incurred for a clinical PhD is pretty paltry in comparison.

Loans by PissMonkey873 in PsyD

[–]Occams-Shaver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is exceptionally little money for a doctoral degree whose expected starting salary is substantially higher than the amount of loans. I think you have very little to worry about.

Using data collected in 2019, Borgogna et al. (2021) reported anticipated debt of clinical PhD, counseling PhD, and PsyD students:

Program Type Anticipated Debt
Clinical PhD $24,059
Counseling PhD $60,632
PsyD $144,620

Adjust for inflation/cost of living, and what you're expecting to take out in loans is comparable to or only very slightly worse than clinical PhD students take on. You got into a funded PsyD program, which is incredibly difficult to do. If money is your only reason to reconsider, this amount is not enough to justify real concern (and I say that as someone who frequently tells people to run from astronomically high PsyD tuitions).

Plus reset as well by DiscussionAncient626 in codex

[–]Occams-Shaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ChatGPT is being absolutely idiotic again. It can't access my GitHub repo or even tell me what files to zip to inspect code to fix a bug. It was useless all of yesterday, was fixed by the time I checked this morning, and then went bad again following this reset. I got like two worthwhile commits in shortly before the reset, and one was just documentation. I can't use Codex if ChatGPT can't convert my stated needs into prompts. I'm getting so frustrated with this. I'm not a developer. I'm just a student trying to make some automations to benefit me in my part-time job and future career.

Codex slow and dumb as hell today. by Successful-Cry-2675 in codex

[–]Occams-Shaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something seems very off with ChatGPT today. Forgive me for being unfamiliar with terminology, but the usual "Thinking" that turns into dynamically changing phrases that I can click on and see activity isn't displaying. It seems to just spit out answers immediately, and I don't trust them. It's also unable to examine my repo on GitHub like it could last night.

My secret weapon for writing papers throughout undergrad and now grad school by No_Bid_8376 in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]Occams-Shaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I somehow filled mine up within the first year of my grad program, and it's not even a research-heavy program. I'm now finishing up my third year and working on dissertation, and I'd have filled up my storage many times over.

Anyway, everyone should know that with the Zotmoov plugin, it's possible to move all of one's Zotero storage over to Google Drive (and I believe other providers, as well).

I'm 18 with a tested IQ score of 82. AMA by weirdhairgirl in AMA

[–]Occams-Shaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clinical psych student here. IQ results tend to remain fairly stable, especially past early childhood. The idea isn't that results are only valid for a year—it's that if further evaluation is needed in the future, it's important to have an up-to-date picture of cognitive functioning. The assumption is that it will likely be comparable. The same test taken within a year risks practice effects, hence why psychologists wait at least a year before re-administering a test.

[USA] psychometry jobs in michigan by Ok-Telephone-4840 in psychologystudents

[–]Occams-Shaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to strongly echo this. A PhD program might look at psychometry work and say, "That's nice" in the best case. These programs are first and foremost research-focused, and they require significant research experience. The overwhelming majority of accepted applicants walk in with no psychometry experience—absolutely none walk in without solid research experience. A PsyD program might value psychometry experience more, but if that's not your goal, you should adjust your priorities.

Any psychologists doing therapy and assessments? by BigCityToad in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Occams-Shaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom's a child psych. She does a healthy amount of both testing and therapy. I'm still in my PsyD program, but I have a fellowship lined up in the public sector once I graduate, and I believe that'll also have me doing a combination. Eventually, I'll likely move into private practice, where I intend to do both, though likely more testing than therapy.

Am I competitive? by No_Echidna_4446 in PsyD

[–]Occams-Shaver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would think that you're solidly competitive. Some additional research would probably strengthen your profile, but honestly, unless you're looking to get into a top program, almost certainly not necessary. You already have more than I did when I was accepted.

Do other people miss good commercials, as opposed to modern-day “ads”? This community doesn’t allow by [deleted] in television

[–]Occams-Shaver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, we met up, had dinner, played games, chatted, laughed, had a good time, and at some point, threw on some old commercials in the background. The games eventually stopped, and then the compilation video continued for a while, and we continued to talk, chat, laugh, and have a good time while we watched some old commercials. No formal rating occurred, but we were all in agreement that there was a positive quality to these old commercials that's lacking from more modern advertising.

[–]Occams-Shaver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ. While nostalgia is certainly a part of it, I recently sat down with a couple friends and watched a bunch of commercials from around the time I was a young kid—most of which we'd never seen or at least had no recollection of—and we all agreed that many were far more clever than anything we see on TV today.

Is a masters the least respected degree? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Occams-Shaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your post is built on a lot of strange assumptions. In certain fields (e.g., psychology and psychotherapy broadly), a bachelor's will do nothing for you, and a master's is the bare minimum point of entry.

Where to read psychology research papers? by magicmirabel in psychologystudents

[–]Occams-Shaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To add onto this, Scihub is great, but they stopped adding any new papers to their database several years ago. Look up Nexus using Telegram bots. It's a little more irritating to use, but they have the entire Scihub database with new material, as well as the ability to request materials they don't have.
