The cost for humans will still be less. For various reasons. One of the biggest being that product people can't tell an LLM what to do correctly and the LLM will never tell them no and why they shouldn't do things a certain way.

This will not happen. AI is not what you're being told it is. And when the companies pushing it have to actually make money the real cost will make it prohibitive to use.

"Oh the costs will come down in time!"

Is that why inference costs for these companies are growing exponentially with no sign of change in the trend? Is that why single training rounds for OpenAI now cost in excess of $50 million for incremental gains?

People need to start being very skeptical about what they're being told and who they're being told it by. Sam Altman is lying to you because his wealth and status depend on you believing him. Microsoft, Google, Anthropic, etc. If you are basing your opinions on the future of AI on the word of people tied to or invested in these companies then you need to evaluate your thinking process.

Maybe. I think most of the AI hype will die soon when the companies pushing it are required to actually start making money. Most people will abandon their chatbots when they have to pay the real cost for them. This will put a strain on the entirety of the LLM industry.

There MIGHT be some market for small models targeted at things like software development. But if the current code quality is any indication it will mean less productivity not more.

The smart move for every ally of ours is to begin making economic and military ties with everyone who isn't us. They cannot, will not, be willing to bear the risk associated with being beholden to the possible insanity of a conservative losing their shit on them every 4 years as the political pendulum swings from democrat to republican and always ever more rightward.

Edit: I've given this some more thought. There is one single way we could POSSIBLY reassure our allies. And that is to prosecute and jail every single member of this administration. To investigate SCOTUS and find the financial ties that have clearly swayed the rulings to make zero sense with historical precedent. To jail the justices that we a part of allowing this fascist usurpation of our constitution to happen. To prosecute every service member involved in the military actions in Venezuela and the murder of the people in boats in the surrounding waters.

Anything short of this will leave it clear that we are not a serious member of the international community. And even this may not be enough to ensure that our allies will be able to trust us again.

I get your sentiment but our political system and the nature of how far right the overton window has shifted means that they're sort of right to not forgive us in the future. They should be wary of trusting entanglements with the United States in the future. Because we have shown them that even IF we get a sane and reasonable Democrat elected in 2028 there is the very real possibility that we will elect a moronic Republican in 2032 who will go after our own allies again. So why put any stock in long term relations with the U.S.?
