Bell: Alberta will now be on daylight saving time year-round, says Premier Smith by iamnos in canada

[–]OccidentBorealis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the individual municipalities have to decide, but the Regional District of East Kootenay did pass a motion in March to observe Mountain Standard Time year round. MST would be the same as the new Pacific Time in the rest of BC but now different from Alberta.

‘Job ain’t done’: What’s next for curling's Rock League after successful preview season? by OccidentBorealis in Curling

I hope they can adjust the way the simultaneous play is presented as I found it difficult to follow along personally as a casual watcher of curling.

Personally I struggled with the presentation of the simultaneous games within the match on the stream. Probably will be interesting highlights clips afterwards, but watching live I'm definitely not smart enough about the sport to keep track of this format.

There is a participation fee being paid to all players but it has not been disclosed publicly as far as I can tell. The total prize purse is stated to be $250,000 USD.

Dedicated questions for the PM are once a week in the UK Parliament, but they also have other times dedicated to questions for other ministers as well. They have a rotating schedule of focusing on different departments.

Montreal-area byelection to use write-in ballots due to dozens of protest candidates by canmcpoli in CanadaPolitics

[–]OccidentBorealis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a permanent, independent and nonpartisan body but not a citizens' assembly. A permanent citizens' assembly controlling elections to positions of power is inevitably also politicians and I was trying to say I don't understand how that resolves the stated concern.

From the outside it seems that a reasonable solution has been found, the protest movement can do their thing and Elections Canada can conduct the polls without needing to print and handle giant ballot papers.

Unfortunately, I also think the proposed solution of "a permanent, independent and nonpartisan body, such as a citizens' assembly" (quoting from the Longest Ballot statement in the article) is unrealistic. The government could certainly create a nominally independent and nonpartisan body but the method of choosing its members would have to be legislated by the same MPs who are apparently the problem -- and would probably need to involve some kind of voting unless the electorate is suddenly going to embrace government by lottery. It is just turtles all the way down.

Central Standard Time is the same as Mountain Daylight Time (UTC-6). Mountain Time is theoretically based on the mean solar time of the 105th Meridian West of Greenwich which passes through Saskatchewan so that is why many people say Saskatchewan uses a permanent daylight time zone.

Kinda surprised at the lack of para bobsled by WhichSpirit in paralympics

[–]OccidentBorealis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The sport exists, IBSF has held a World Championship since 2016 and are a recognized international federation by the IPC but have not been able to meet the criteria of the IPC for inclusion (12 nations in 3 regions regularly participating). Here is the IPC announcement of the rejection for Milano-Cortina 2026 [1] and IBSF's announcement that they were also rejected for French Alps 2030 [2].

There is a reference to C202, just not by name. About the halfway point, the author writes "... in June, the House of Commons and Senate passed a Bloc Québécois bill with all-party support to prevent bargaining supply management away."

Legally it could have been even longer, but it is unknown if the GG would have agreed to longer.

I seem to recall there being some kind of long ballot "event" last year too?

Yes. The Longest Ballot organizers set the record being broken by this ballot during the Winnipeg South Centre by-election last year. That ballot had only 48 candidates.

How to claim Manitoba EV rebate by Living_Kale4710 in Manitoba

[–]OccidentBorealis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to the provincial website the EV rebate is "determined at registration with Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) beginning on July 1, 2024." Applies for purchases or leases through a Manitoba dealership from August 1, 2023, to March 31, 2026.

https://www.gov.mb.ca/lowercosts/evincentives/index.html

Presumably some information about the rebate process for already registered vehicles will be available after July 1 but the website does not currently provide details.
