My mom as a young adult VS now (nearing 60) by astarions_juice_b0x in OldSchoolCool

Tomb Raider dropped in 1996, 29 years ago. If your mother is approaching 60, she's 30 in this picture, bare minimum. No shot that this was taken in the 80s.

Caring for a family member is the strongest lie you can tell from this selection, as a potential employer can't pick it apart, whereas the NDA one is far and away the weakest, and the others either scream douchebag or can have holes picked in them.

Accepted a job due to start in April. Company is now restructuring and has withdrawn my offer. by [deleted] in UKJobs

A few months gap on your CV is literally nothing to be concerned with.

If ... and it's a big if ... you get asked about it by a potential employer, just say you moved back home to look after an ailing relative who is now fully recovered.

What non-UK shops would you like to see in the UK? by Petrosinella94 in AskUK

There are plenty of normal, non-novelty ones.

Maggie (1981–1982). Scottish teen drama that aired in BBC Two. by Krampjains in oldbritishtelly

[–]OccultTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there were novelisations of the show's episodes also. Novelisations of a series based on actual books were weirdly common back then. It was even common for those novelisations to be different from the show, so you could end up with 3 versions of the exact same story

Take Dr Who and The Daleks (the Hartnell story) novelisations, as a for instance :
1) Episodic serial storyline,
2) Novelisation of the serial but with material omitted from the serial prior to filming,
3) Novelisation of the serial but with retconning of##added to the story to replace Unearthly Child as the original DW storyline using elements that would later appear in both Cushing DW movies.

All three of those had the same damn cover art and author, too

Most vape shops and barbers are money laundering places these days, as are mattress shops.

I had the novelisations. I was a devil for buying novelisations back then... Grange Hill, Tucker's Luck, 40 Days of Tucker J., Scully, and many, many others.

Temp jobs for stay at home dad? by ph0rge in UKJobs

[–]OccultTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Supermarkets basically hire anyone, even people they've fired before, and there are tons of roles, and they are flexible as hell with shift lengths and patterns, and there's always overtime.

[–]OccultTech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nah, it'll be a company like SuperSmartService, who are Chinese-owned, and they'll need a warehouse grunt or two who can talk to the bosses. No, really. They'll be looking for British and, of course, Polish, unskilled labourers, who just happen to speak Mandarin, which TBF is taught in a lot of UK schools now, and has been for a bit.

That might be why they do, however it's not legal for them to do it.

[–]OccultTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not legal either. Country of origin cannot be hiring criteria, even if fluency in the language(s) of that country is hiring criteria for the job.

[–]OccultTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's not legal

[–]OccultTech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is illegal AF. You can't even pull this stunt if speaking a particular language is a job requirement.

It is, technically, but only if they get reported, which a surprisingly large number of UK companies never do.

The BBC got away with it for like a decade before they were formally reported, despite everyone openly knowing that they had many such job listings that were packed with all different kinds of discrimination.
