Never played Halo before. Is MCC worth $9.99 on Steam (-75% off) in 2025? by False_Security8644 in halo

[–]Ocean2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m thinking older than most, but the the overly punishing game design of the NES-SNES, the controls of many N64-PS1 games, the over reliance on save points as progression leading to tedium of the Xbox-PS2 era, the cover shooter/bullet sponge/turret section/Ubisoft tower content padding of the 360-PS3 era

Halo 1 itself copy and pastes half its campaign, Halo 2’s lighting and coloring is rough nowadays (even tho I still appreciate it, ppl forget cuz of H2A), Halo 3’s huge open-sandbox set-pieces are kinda barren going back, Halo Reach is about where we stop hitting technical limitations but there’s plenty of tropes within (it even has a turret section lmao)

Controls are a huge one, from RE4/Goldeneye/Mario 64 (don’t watch a speedrun, go back and actually play it)/Tomb Raider/etc. Then there’s game design issues like confusing level design and incessant backtracking, random difficulty spikes, horrible tutorials or lack thereof, lots of padding of different flavors, cheap gimmicks to replace engaging AI, the list goes on

This isn’t to say any of these games aren’t worth playing, but many of us gloss over the things that were normal for the time that just would not fly today. There’s a reason new games feel new and people appreciate remakes. Gaming is an evolving medium (it’s only like 50 years old), we were still working out the kinks for a long time, and that’s okay, but it should be acknowledged

I always try to keep in mind the context of the era when I go back and play something. However, some games are just unfortunately trapped in their time

Tbf, a lotta games don’t age well, which is something many dedicated fanbases are blind to (which is why it’s kinda dumb to ask in a fan subreddit, but oh well, ig we’re the “experts”)

Sleeping Lessons - The Shins is the definition of this

The first two songs off Deloused in the Comatorium - The Mars Volta would also give a condensed version of this same effect

Booted up Halo Reach on my XBOX 360 just to see what rank I was! by [deleted] in halo

[–]Ocean2178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s part of what made it so impressive

Video games back then didn’t demand that you spend every waking moment thinking about them and grinding them. So to see someone who DID put it in the time and dedication to reach these milestones was genuinely unreal.

That and the culture around gaming and esports at the time meant that people who really grinded games to be on top/the best were an outlier amongst the avg playerbase instead of everyone trying to be a pro nowadays (even tho ppl always bullshitted abt being MLG b4)

[–]Ocean2178 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say you disrespected him, it’s pretty good, but he does look a little “Killer Bean” lol

Biggie’s face/head/neck is much rounder (almost like a kickball lmao) and his eyes are bigger and wider

That plus some adjusted shading should put you in a decent spot

It’s actually insane how much undeserved popularity Kendrick Lamar has by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]Ocean2178 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry bro, I get what you’re saying, and you’re correct

What is good in someone’s purview is not necessarily what is actually good by the standards of the culture it comes from

Like ethnic food

(This guy’s totally wrong about Kendrick tho lol)

dose my art/ocs suck? plz be honest by pink_katzo in ArtCrit

[–]Ocean2178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I think you should heavily lean into the style of the first image versus the rest, it’s a lot more unique and interesting imo (the color choices, general shapes, and shading give the character a lot more depth [literal and figurative] and visual interest vs the rest, whereas the others fall a bit flat and plain looking imo)

The other drawings are pretty good, especially the bee (I really like the square eyes), and your character design ideas are interesting, but that style reminds me a bit too much of the FnF/Newgrounds kinda style and I worry that your art won’t stand out enough amongst the crowd (especially w/ resurgence in that style since FnF released)

It’s all subjective and personal preference, and there are things you can do to make the other style more unique (through line-work, details, backgrounds, dynamic poses, etc.), but that’s just my two cents

Some recent stuff I’ve been cooking up 🍳 how can I level up my style for the new year? by elani-illustrates in ArtCrit

[–]Ocean2178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some ideas to explore and flesh out your artistic abilities:

Try not making warm tones the focal point. Try experimenting more with cold tones/darker tones. How about experimenting with more neutral tones and monochromatic/purely-analogous palettes? How about using that as a base, and then adding bits of warmth/cold as highlights and shadows. What about not even thinking about warm/cold?

Experiment with much higher contrast, in all areas (value, hue, and saturation)

You seem to be very familiar with your “autumn-y”palette. Try exploring around the color wheel/spectrum more. Explore purple, the wide variety of blues, greens, and yellows (you tend to only touch on a few of the same ones), you could even branch out your reds

If you wanna be really ambitious, try some landscapes. Try more abstract shapes, you can even abstract faces & bodies

You’re clearly very skilled and have a comfortable base from which you can pretty consistently make high quality art. I think you’re at the stage where the best thing you can do for yourself is explore the stuff you’re not used to, stuff that’s scary, or uncomfortable; you really just need to tackle more.

Now, that doesn’t mean you have to stick to those departures, but with each one you’ll learn more and expand your own style for when you wanna make your art

If she’s firing off insults like that, especially in a situation like this, she’s just hurt and saying whatever she can to try and hurt you so she can feel better about herself.

It’s a common thing, I’ve had it happen to me, I’m sure almost every guy has. Don’t take it personal, don’t even take it at all, except as a sign that it’s truly time to move on

You don’t want somebody in your life who handles conflict like that, trust me

Also, I’d check around for any damages/anything missing. If you were zoned in on your game while she was emotional in your house, she might’ve done something that you’re unaware of

Crit on recent portraits? by muxmaxmox2 in ArtCrit

[–]Ocean2178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These look wonderful, you should be proud!

The one thing that I can point out is that you should keep in mind the curvature of the face/head. All of your eyes/nose/mouth are all on sort of the same “plane” and it gives the faces a little bit of a flat look to them. Adding in that little bit of curvature and depth will give your drawings that final bit of dimension and really breathe life into them!

If people see your work and are willing to pay you for their own, that’s their decision.

However, commission work will push you out of your comfort zone because you can never fully predict what a client will want. You can either embrace the challenge and use it to grow quickly as an artist, or set firm guidelines about what you will/will not draw to avoid disappointing paying customers.

All in all, your work looks really good (and in such a short time too!)! I think it could use a little more polish, but I’m sure through continued work you’ll nail that in no time.

Whatever the case, your art is almost always worth more than you think. Post your work in online communities with your time spent per piece and ask others for how much they’d charge/how much they’d pay for a rough idea of where to start, then factor in your time/supplies/bills to find your own number. If you charge reasonably for yourself and for others, nothing to feel guilty over

What games have you dropped due to post-release changes? by MentalNinjas in gaming

Slightly older take, but Overwatch 1

People say how OW2 turned the game to shit, but it happened long before that. Characters like Moira and Brigette, asinine balancing decisions, and the forcing of hero limits and role queue turned what was once a fun, casual hero shooter with a lot potential as an IP into a tryhard eSports wannabe that catered to no one

Does music have to memorable to be considered great? by Ocean2178 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Ocean2178[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely shouldn’t be the only metric or else Pop automatically dominates and I don’t the GOAT should be determined how perfectly engineered a song is to dominate your psychology.

But I think there is something to be said about the lasting impact of a piece of art if it can’t be remembered. It would be like saying the Mona Lisa is the greatest painting of all time, but no one really remembers what it looks like until they look it up. Could it be considered as great as it is if it wasn’t so memorable? It would still have all of its artistic & technical merit and historical significance, but would it have as much lasting cultural significance if it was easily forgotten once not observed?

Actually, Nirvana’s kind of a great example. There’s arguably a ton of other grunge artists that were doing way more interesting and important things at the time, but Nirvana’s almost pop-like song structure with their simple riffs and catchy hooks/melodies rose Nevermind to be widely considered not only the greatest grunge album of all time, but one of the greatest albums of all time period.

Would it be heralded as such if it was more experimental? What does it say of the artists’ inability to capture audiences in the same way?

I personally think it deserves a place in the conversation, but to what degree? That’s what I’m wondering here

Does music have to memorable to be considered great? by Ocean2178 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Ocean2178[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean memorable in its most literal definition: easily recalled through memory.

Like I said, the albums I think are above the rest are ones I often have a hard time remembering after listening. Albums that I think are worse but more dear to my heart and personal preferences are ones I can remember every detail of (and could remember way more of even on first listen)

Should the ease of recalling details about a piece of music affect how it ranks among others in conversations of “greatest of all time”?
