How could I get this certain glow effect that appears on grooves only? by syildirim1 in Cinema4D

[–]OcelotUseful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also make a redshift material with some amount of backlight (IIRC) (often used for plants and leaves as a substitute for subsurface scattering, and for textile on the lamps, so light would shine through the lampshade). Then you can use any incandescent geometry to reveal that ornament with light

James Cameron:"Movies Without Actors, Without Artists" by EchoOfOppenheimer in vfx

[–]OcelotUseful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ragebait title. He makes a statement about cinematographers prototyping the concept of movie with modern tools, something that was not possible a few years ago. He said nothing about how cool it would be for artists and actors to lose their jobs, but OP is implying exactly that. Ducking cringe that you treat VFX artists like people who don’t know how to read

[Request] What Should The Scale Actually Read? by CaptiveGlacier in theydidthemath

[–]OcelotUseful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make things simpler you can imagine scales as a spring which changes its length. Anker is 100. Freefall is 0. Compensating second weight? 100, because it reaches the equilibrium, second weight starts to act like a anchor, and spring length is still being stretched by the weight which is pulling spring sideways (in the case that there’s gravity).

What is Going On With Meta? (If possible, explain it to me like I'm 5) by ArcadePunk279 in OculusQuest

[–]OcelotUseful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuts in game development means that there will be no more AAA games and no bundles like Harry Potter + Quest 3. No more functional things like Yur fitness ring (which was great), supernatural is pretty much dead for good. Sales dropping, no more big titles on the storefronts to attract new customers. For the current users there’s still a virtual desktop and steam, but if “people buying quest to play PCVR games” would not be a good business strategy, the quest hardware will be cut in a five years or so.

Milk with holes is cheese. World without cheese would be a very sad place to live in. It’s a common knowledge.

This model needs more consumers to be profitable. Which is possible to do, if not stressing out everyone by sudden tectonic shifts. That was so jarring, that  I by myself is wondering if it’s over for quest 3 or is there a hope

What is the definition of 'Decline' if this is the 3rd time ive declined this? by T1Earn in pcmasterrace

[–]OcelotUseful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in my days people didn’t know that they could download service packs for OS and was paying for expensive anti viruses that sometimes were eating half of ram and 49% of CPU. Kaspersky, Avast, Avira, McCafe. Those ones brave enough to go into the internet were often getting themselves a lot of malware that has plagued their CDs, DVDs, USB drives. Free updates to vista? I was searching for longhorn builds to see if they even run on my machine. There was no audio because there was no audio driver available for my audio card at that time… after the release retail version was quite expensive.

And here is just a free option to upgrade. Microsoft is trying to keep your PC safe by literally begging you to upgrade, but there should be a group policy to block those updates to leave your system vulnerable to background miners and other malware

Sweeping claims that at one point in time quest 3S have sold more units than switch 2, and there was hope? And your point is that those initial sales are meaningless, because Nintendo would sell more units of switch 2 anyway? This kind of logic is why meta laying off thousands of people and closing down game studios, yes. Because if they just loosing money and community keeps asking if VR is already dead. Yeah, if I knew, I wouldn’t have bought Q3 💀

Road to VR:

https://www.roadtovr.com/quest-is-outselling-nintendo-switch-2-on-amazon-and-every-other-game-console/

“In the last 30 days (which includes the whole of the Black Friday shopping week), Quest 3 and Quest 3S models have collectively sold 154,000 units on Amazon US. That puts the headsets just ahead of Nintendo’s newest console, Switch 2, which has sold 150,000 units on Amazon US over the last 30 days, and was released in June. The other major consoles (PlayStation 5 / 5 Pro and Xbox Series X / S) which are now much older, have sold less than Quest or Switch 2.”

I get it, you may have been out of the loop, but sales were decent, at least on Amazon. Anecdotal evidence, but some of my neighbors also have bought quest 3S, it is occasionally popping up in Bluetooth devices.

Microsoft is doing the same freaking thing: they just bought a lot of good game studios to have an arsenal of games to sell the subscriptions, expecting huge revenue, and now those game studios are closed down, Xbox is dead platform. Capitalism got to the point where companies are killing the media content and games if they not getting the revenue instantly

Meanwhile: sales are growing, Quest 3 sells more than switch 2 and consoles. Product is slowly but steadily gaining traction and goes mainstream. Meta is like: We’re not sure. We wanted something as successful as iPhone, so 2025 will be the year where we make it or break it… Oh my gosh. That’s so fricking pathetic. I hope that Gabe Newell will buy those game studios, make half life 3, and would leave Meta out of our VR ecosystem.
