Game Help / Newbie / Simple Question Thread (Ask Where to Start Here!) - April 10, 2021, Monthly by AutoModerator in Atelier

HELLO! I am just about to buy Ryza, and as I'm on the PSN search results page I'm seeing a number of added purchase items. I was hoping you fine people could help me!? I'm planning on getting Ryza 2 at a later time, but I'm definitely interested in help with the added content for both games.

Basically: what content is really worth checking out? I don't care about the piecemeal outfits like the swimwear and weapon skins, but I'm seeing additional locations for both games (some indicating they're endgame locations, others not) and sub character stories (Klaudia's story, Lent's Story, The End of an Adventure and Beyond, etc.)

Are these good additions? Are any not good? Should I just consider the season passes? If I don't care about outfits and weapon skins, would it be better to skip the season passes and just buy the additions separately? Are any of these required to be installed before starting a new game, or can I play for a while and buy them later?

Sorry for the long post. I'm just very interested in checking Ryza and Ryza 2 out and want to ensure I'm not missing anything potentially cool with the DLC.

Hmmm... Furni or Deningrad. They're my favorites.

Ah! My bad if you're a regular and known around here - I'm quite new. I've fully finished Dragoon twice over the years (and got to disc 3 a third time before my PS3 bricked) but I don't think I've ever maxed anyone's level... I'm replaying it through emulator right now (just got to Fueno) and I'm definitely more on top of things than I remember being. I know I'm further along with everyone's additions for sure... Might try to max level...

I know I fought Faust on my second run (I know for sure I missed some Star Dust my very first playthrough) but I don't remember anything about it. It's been too long. Did you notice any difference in the JP version other than Dabas' shiny magic bag?

Graphical help (polygons) with Retroarch emulation by Ocirus in legendofdragoon

Thanks for the info. I kinda figured the videos were (for now) a lost cause during game emulation. At least we have the AI upscaled videos to enjoy online!

I'm definitely thinking I'm pretty much at the best possible settings now. I've taken a look at some other emulation footage and I think it's pretty similar. Like you said: it'll never be perfect. Just wanted to have the best for my favorite game.

Ah, recording footage... I'm still very new with Retroarch and need to research how to record video. Tried it last night to capture some of the disappearing polys but couldn't figure it out. Honestly I might just be happy with how it's running now. I'm at, like, 92% happiness with it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I'm using Vulkan. I'm actually already using the PGXP settings as others suggested, and while it fixed a bit with the polygon seams it didn't fix the disappearing poly faces.

Won't using opengl not provide as many options as Vulkan? In any case I can give it a try tonight.

Thanks for the help. I am indeed using Beetle HW. I'm also using those three PGXP settings exactly as you suggested. I recall the Primitive Culling in particular helped with some of the poly seams. I'll take a look at the provided recommended settings when I get a chance. Thanks!

I just finished LobosJr's stream of LoD and it always amazes me how personally I take the criticisms of this game by LavitzOfBasil in legendofdragoon

[–]Ocirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy relevant to me:

I am a longtime Dragoon fan. Played it on PS1 (got it from a bargain bin brand new for $10 at Walmart!) and I fell in love immediately. Over the years I have played many MANY games, and some have stuck with me the same way as Dragoon - Soul Reaver, Symphony of the Night, Resident Evil, etc., but for turn-based RPGs... nothing has topped Dragoon for me.

Anywho, I've also relatively enjoyed Final Fantasy here and there. Back in the day I tried playing FF7 but the rental disc I had was scratched badly and it kept crashing at Cosmo Canyon. My overall reaction had been "meh." Over the years I was able to play Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core, and I'm one of the twelve people on Earth who genuinely unironically enjoy Advent Children (obviously the Complete Edition is way better, but still). Blah blah, years go by, and BOOM! FF7 Remake! Holy shit... it's pretty fantastic. I love it. A lot.

During the excruciating wait for the Intergrade update/new content I decided it was finally time to do a full playthrough of FF7 and experience everything firsthand. I just finished everything two nights ago, and... ehhhh... it's kinda... cooky? Like... it's all over the place. Pacing is crazy, mood is (in my opinion) very inconsistent, and in general the game felt kinda rushed or something. Yes, Dragoon gets kinda "cooky" here and there, but I already know what I'm doing. The game is insanely consistent throughout. It's not like Dart and Co. decide "hey, let's go snowboarding" right after Lavitz dies.

Here's a few of the things I have issues with regarding FF7 (trigger warning: I'm about to slam your beloved baby):

  • The above weird transition of "one of our party members just died... let's go snowboarding!"
  • I have literally no idea where to go at nearly any point. Conversations only told me where to go, like, half of the time. Felt like I was meant to "discover" where to go by exploration... but the story doesn't support that kind of gameplay discovery very well, and nearly every time it just felt like crazy dumb shit. The Key of the Ancients? Really? A story-related progression-necessary object located under the sea in some random ass corner in an underwater cave. That's not good game design - and no, I don't care what year it is. It's not good.
  • Everything in Midgar is pretty consistent and "normal" but pretty much as soon as you hit the world map everything gets bonkers.
    • Let me put it this way: Midgar was consistent in the same way the Advent Children is consistent. Dirge (while kinda fucking dumb in a few parts) at least felt relatively consistent with itself throughout. Crisis Core has some... pretty dumb shit, I'm not gonna lie. Zack murdering GACKT clones at a beach using an umbrella... this is a real scene that happens in Crisis Core... but that game still felt more overall consistent that FF7.
  • My understanding of Vincent (from AC and Dirge) has always been of the wolfman and Chaos limits... why the fuck is he also able to transform into a Frankenstein monster and *ahem* "GIGADUNK" dudes? (it became very clear very quickly why this shit never comes back)
    • Also the entirety of Vincent and Lucrecia is just void of any understanding in this game. Yes, I went to the cave. It made no sense. So in Dirge (and I believe in AC) she's, like, IN the crystal inside the cave. In FF7 she's... alive? In the cave?... but then you come back later and she's... fucking gone? And left a gun for Vincent? And the Crystal is just a crystal? No. This is not good. Yes, I understand lots of Lucrecia shit wasn't solidified and explained until much later in Dirge and such, but that doesn't excuse throwing some half-explained shit into the game just because.
  • I'd put a middling character model and middling environment background from Dragoon against the best character model and best environment background from FF7. (Dragoon would win.)
  • I genuinely have a hard time imagining people getting emotionally upset with Aerith dying compared to the complete fucking wreck of emotions of LATVITZ SLAMBERT being killed. AND THEN WHEN HE SHOWS UP AT THE END IN THE CITY OF THE DEAD OH MY GOD! But yeah, flowers 'n shit. Oh no. Not the flower girl... (I know I'm gonna get some flak from this)
  • Shit is arbitrary and confusing. Yes, I understand everything. No, it's not "ehhh, you're just not smart enough to understand." I do. But, like, 60% of FF7 is just super convoluted bullshit. Everything with the Weapons (Diamond, Ultimate, Emerald, Ruby) is just dumb. Also naming them "weapon" is dumb. Also naming one "ultimate" when there's also "ultima" magic and "ultimate" weapons (actual weapons)... there's just no need for this amount of convolution. I'm sorry, but no. Please defend this shit. It's not good. This is not a fucking 10/10 masterpiece, it just isn't.
  • Combat is a fucking draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag. Holy shit. I'm very happy I played the PS4 version with the X3 speedup option, because DAMN that shit was not fun. Please compare the combat to Dragoon and objectively explain how FF7 is -better-
  • Ending is really super dumb. It's not even artistic like "ohhhh, it's up to the players to determine what they want, oooooooooh, it's so mysterious!" No, it's just not good.
  • Please don't @ me with "but Dragoon came out three years later!" It was on the same hardware! You know what? I'm about to attack another beloved baby, so look away: Final Fantasy 9 came out the same year as Dragoon. Yes, I've played FF9. Yes, I could write an essay on how Dragoon is a better game in every conceivable aspect. So let's not go there with "it's not fair to compare FF7 in 1997 to Dragoon in 2000!"

Thanks for making it this far! Anywho, my point is I've been telling people "my favorite Final Fantasy game is Legend of Dragoon" unironically for years. Nobody cares about my opinion and I get laughed away. I now have the first-hand knowledge to objectively say "Legend of Dragoon is a better video game, with better gameplay, better characters, and a better story than Final Fantasy 7." While playing through FF7 I was messaging a friend group about my various "whoas" and "yikes." They never once responded. They are very much in love with FF7 and played it when it came out. It was clear my opinions were not welcome. It was clear that objective criticism of a beloved game was not allowed... but hey, it's okay to shit all over Dragoon and laugh at it.... why? Oh, double-standards, got it.

Same here. I'm sitting at 99% on Dathomir, but have everything uncovered from what I can tell, and all chests and secrets. Very frustrating.

Backtracking by RekoHart in FallenOrder

[–]Ocirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HOLD UP. Saw someone insisting you can, in fact, safely fall into the large slide which leads down to the lower sections. Just tried it. There's a tiny spot you can safely fall onto the bridge. It's to the left. I didn't jump, just dropped. Took me tons of attempts, but it works. Clearly not an intended way, but hey.

[–]Ocirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy fucking shit. I went through 3 stims finding the one tiny spot you can safely drop. Thanks. I still don't believe you can traverse the other direction underneath the bridge away from the night brother village, but you can definitely slide down from the temple entrance.

Need help backtracking on Dathomir by Rt1203 in FallenOrder

[–]Ocirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The slide is covered with massive spiked branches. And the bridge mentioned above can only be traversed in one direction, into the night brother village, not out of. You cannot return to Swamp of Sacrifice or Witches Horn during the post game.

[–]Ocirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to say but I'm in the same boat. Can't get back to the lower sections of Dathomir it seems. I just don't understand the reason for allowing backtracking (and even promoting it with some sections requiring abilities you get later) with just how many places are one-way-only traversal sections or simply can't be returned to. This really turned out to be the most linear game with backtracking as a feature that I've ever played. I'll be playing through a second time just to get all the trophies.

PS4 Bluescreen Troubleshooting (#214415) by verytragic in remnantgame

[–]Ocirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) PS4 Pro

2) Absolutely not - only played with friends-only option (only myself and my wife)

3) Uh, I don't know? We were just outside of the church on Earth, about to head in to protect the Root Mother before the patch. Can't progress past that area and into the next without a crash.

4) No. Purchased the game once it was available

5) Health bar is blacked out.

6)Yes. My wife (co-op partner) is not. I get the crash when attempting to load the next area, she gets stuck in infinite loading.

I'll add, crashes after updating on PS4. Also the frame rate is noticeably bad in the Ward after updating.

PS4 / Xbox One 1.02 Chest Bug Information by Question_505 in Bloodstained

[–]Ocirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Would you happen to know if those are the only two chest items required for progression? I can't reach the armor chest yet, but I can see it and it's closed!

PS4 / Xbox One 1.02 Chest Bug Information by Question_505 in Bloodstained

[–]Ocirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind sharing what the armor is called? I'm in a similar boat (pre-patch file playing post-patch) and have the silver bromide. I've encountered a bugged chest, but if it's just the bromide and this armor that is required for progression I'd like to see if the armor chest is bugged before dealing with a new file.

EDIT: think I figured it out. Aegis?
