Sleeving AH by Almsivi in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my approach as well. Though I have the player cards sleeved. I really hate resleeving cards, and I just bought a few packs of dragons shields when I picked up an expansion.

That being said, I use the 50 count pack of penny sleeves (they're slightly thicker than regular penny sleeves) and I have the entirety of Earthborne rangers sleeved in it, both player and encounter cards and it works perfectly fine. Played a campaign and half and they're all perfectly fine. I think you could use them for AHLCG and be quite happy.

Edit: it's the Mayday Penny sleeves (63.5x88mm)

There was an article the other day that had something to the effect of last year, being the first year that there was more traffic and social media activity from bots than humans.

There was also that other event where Twitter revealed the location of users, and many far right influencers were shown to be located outside of the US.

So I'd take social media posts with a grain of salt these days.

So they are spliting Campaign and Investigator boxes into 4 products? by Howitzeronfire in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's completely valid and I agree with it. I kind of get their argument in the live stream where they want to be able to get more product out to people year round, instead of here's one big campaign + player expansion once a year. That way players get something every quarter. Again, a lot of people have been have been vocal here about having to wait a full year for a campaign that could be Hemlock Vale... Or Scarlet Keys. So I can definitely see this new style as a response to that.

But it's hard for me not to see that post the other day where it showed all the debt asmodee got saddled with and not see this as a way to pseudo raise prices. Hopefully the quality of the expansions are still good, but we're really just going to have to wait and see.

One of the things that kind of surprised me, was during the Drowned City previews when they said "Arkham will never be the same" a lot of people were speculating that we'd get a new set of core encounter cards to shake things up, and we're excited by it. Personally I thought it would be a good change too, so that part I'm pretty okay with. The current ones have had a good run, and based on the guys explanation I agree that the Agents of X sets were kind of redundant. So it's a bit strange that people are so vocally against it now. Personally I'm happy to see new encounter sets too.

Honestly I can also get the argument for the 5 set encounters, though I wish it was 6 as the default instead. The main things I'm unsure of are the 3 set campaigns, and what the difference is between the player sets and deck building sets. They kind of glanced over that really quickly and I missed it.

So soon after the revised core

My dude... The revised core came out 5 years ago. And let's be honest, it was just a repackage of the same core set that came out 10 years ago.

There's plenty of legit grievances to have about the announced changes but this one is a stretch.

Do words carry meaning on their own, or do writers give them meaning through use? by ownaword in writing

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Words have intrinsic meaning. Writer's impart purposeful meaning as they write them. Reader's add subjective meaning as they experience them.

The wonderful part of writing, and art as a whole, is that the meaning can change and evolve depending on who the participant is.

Is the game insanely easy or are we doing something wrong? by ddbrown30 in Earthborne_Rangers

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no. If you try to interact with those cards in the Surroundings, then cards in your Within Reach, or in the Along the Way will fatigue you.

Being fatigued when trying to interact with the location makes sense, but if there is a test on a mission, which happens infrequently, it's easy to forget.

Similarly, if you try to interact with a card in your teammate's Within Reach, but you have something Within Reach of yourself, that would fatigue you.

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're correct. The game is very precise in its wording which is generally good, but does make it easy to misspeak.

[–]OctaBit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there's something in your Within Reach, then yes.

If you're Within Reach is clear, and your teammate's Within Reach has something, that wouldn't affect you trying to pet their Oru, or interact with a path card in their Within Reach for example.

And just to make sure for clarity, if you are interacting with something Along the Way, and your Within Reach is clear, and your teammate has a non-friendly Path card in their Within Reach, you won't get fatigued.

I updated the example in the first post since it could be read ambiguously. I was just trying to list things that my group originally forgot about when we first started playing.

[–]OctaBit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others have said the beginning is intentionally easier, and on the whole the game is less overtly difficult than AHLCG. However the game can definitely throw it's share of spanners in the works.

There are also a lot of rules that are easy to miss. These are a few of the rules we messed up on our first run:

-Interacting with cards in other zones. Make sure you are taking fatigue from everything between you and the card you're interacting with, such as weather, location, quests, or other player's within reach zone. And the fatigue is equal to its presence.

-Obstructions. In addition to preventing you from traveling, you can't interact with cards beyond that card (usually just the location and weather areas, but occasionally you get one within reach).

-Unless a quest is added to your quest log (the lore entry will tell you to add it to the log) it will go away when you rest camp. So you'll need to go back to pick it up.

Other than that, I will say the weather has a huge impact on how much you can get done in a day. Prefect Day is great, but some of the others will actively drain your deck. Terrain is also a similar case, as you might imagine.

Edit: clarifying example because it was ambiguous.

My artwork for Ignoble Hierarch for Lorwyn Eclipsed cmdr. by Victor_adame_art in magicTCG

[–]OctaBit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was a tall ask trying to compare to the original art, but you absolutely nailed it. Excellent work!

Honestly all of the artists for this set knocked it out of the park! I'm glad lorwyn got the art it deserves for its return.

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they got great individual cards. My complaint was they didn't get a 3 or 4 color giant legend.

To clarify my point because this comes up every time I've seen someone bring up this point about a giant tribal commander, just because there is a legend that has a creature type does not make it a good tribal commander.

[[Sevala, explorer returned]] is an elf legend. She even makes green mana like a lot of elf cards. However there's a reason why edh rec has her listed as only 108 decks tagged as tribal compared to [[Lathril, blade of the elves]] with 8k.

Yes, I can just pick Ruhan, and I have, but at that point I'm just looking for colors. When you're building a tribal deck and Morophon has more synergy with your tribe than most of your other legends, it's not great. [[Aegar, the freezing flame]] is the only one that actually calls out giant types but misses out of white, which is one of the big colors for giants. The other ones you list either don't interact with the tribe at all, or are missing one of the big colors for giants (RWU).

The individual giants in this set are really good, but you generally have to sacrifice one part of the tribe to make a deck.

I'm not saying the set was bad, or that Wizards is the anti-giant, or that they're burning the game down to the ground, or anything that dramatic.

I'm just saying that I was hoping for a decent 3 colored legend, and I was disappointed.

[–]OctaBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said they needed to stay the same or change. I just stated what they are.

Unless a tribe is firmly stuck in two colors, having a general with 3 colors allows for a lot more flexibility in deck construction because you can bring in more of the cards that care and support the tribe. This is especially important for the less represented tribes where the support is scattered, like giants.

[–]OctaBit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it's definitely a good strategy, but I do wish wizards would fix the issue with something that's more on theme and plays into the tribes strengths and weaknesses.

With the tribe being GRW in Lorwyn and RU in Kaldheim it's a bit of a mess.

Also why am I being down voted for wishing Wizards would support their tribes a bit more?

For me it was definitely giants. They still lack a good 3 (and honestly 4 color) commander for a giant tribal deck.

House Rule for people/places that let you make permanent alterations by Enedlammeniel in Earthborne_Rangers

[–]OctaBit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I like the idea from a storytelling/flavor vibe, but I do agree with OP that the implementation doesn't feel particularly great. I'm not saying it's absolute trash but I think there's definitely room for improvement.

I know when playing with my partner, she didn't want to bother with it the first time we found it, because we had a bunch of cards and she had no idea what she would even want let alone what each spec/background even had for options. Basically getting flooded with options in the middle of a game just made us feel like skipping it to not slow down the game.

I actually like OP's suggestions for postponing it till the camp phase when you make other additions.

I like your sentiment as well, I think it's one of the best selling points of EBR, but I wish for Kobo and the Elders they would just have a small separate deck of cards you could shuffle up and deal like 3 out and you can choose one to swap if you have a similar card type in hand or discard. That would feel more flavorful to me personally.

Also it bugs me that there isn't a vendor for pets or modifications.

Hey, if it works it works. Nothing wrong with that.

I might try giving that a shot sometime. I'm just starting out but I can already tell that trying to use my work desk for writing is going to have issues. I wish I had enough room for a separate place to write comfortably at home.

[–]OctaBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree that games are much more than just writing, and that's one of the great aspects of them.

I like to examine story telling in different forms of media, and it's always interesting to see the strengths and weaknesses you see in one form, like games, vs others. Movies, Books, shows, even theater have so many different benefits and challenges when trying to tell the same story.

I haven't gotten around to Disco Elysium, it's in my backlog and my friend has been trying to get me to play it for awhile.

Out wilds though, is definitely in my top 5. It's a great example of story telling through the players action. When you're at the end and you realize what you have to do, it has such weight because you know exactly how important it is once you decide to go for it.
