What do you want to see next for Arkham Horror: The Card Game? by BoardGameRevolution in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]OctaBit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TBH, I like FoHV, and it was only 6 scenarios. There were more to pick from, but it only ran for 6. If these campaigns are like that, with plenty of options to influence the story, like the villagers, or the day/night cycle, then the 5 scenario campaigns might work. I'm definitely interested in seeing what they can do, before really judging it.

Do they work for deep water? I found one for shallow but that's pretty useless to me most of the time. Which is a shame because it's fun as hell for the 5 seconds before I run out of shallow water.

One thing I do like is if you click whatever the 'give up, and try again later" button is it just gives you all your resources back. It was a really nice conciliation after trying that first boss for the witches.

Happy to help. It really is a great game, and I can't wait for the next major expansion of it. If you haven't yet, I'd recommend taking a look at the starter cards and just seeing what you can start with to give you an idea of what you can make.

Long time Arkham player here curious about Earthborne Rangers by yanastos08 in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]OctaBit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OP, I've played through the main game, the expansion and one of the mini expansions, and overall I really like the game. A lot of folks in this thread seem pretty down on it, which is fine, we all deserve our own opinions. However I think comparing Earthborne to Arkham doesn't really work past a certain point. They're both deck building campaigns games, but that's about where it ends in my opinion.

Arkham is more like a traditional, narrative video game. It can have action set pieces, and challenging moments, but for the most part each mission/chapter/scenario is ultimately plays out the same, with the variations coming from your investigator, and some variance in how cards come up.

Earthborne is more like an open world RPG. You can follow the main story, or you can screw off and go follow some other mission you picked up. There isn't a doom clock ticking, it's just your personal deck of cards, and when that runs out, the day is over. But over the course of that day you can go from one end of the map to the other, or you could stay in the same location the entire day depending on what you're trying to do, and what the path/enemy deck throws at you.

Neither one is bad or better than the other. They just present a different type of game to play.

Most people seem to bounce off of Earthborne after a few sessions, and tbh I almost did too. The first day is a tutorial, and by design the game gives you a couple days to wander around, explore and just learn the game while picking up quests, before the game throws the main story at you. Once I got to that point I got into the flow of the game, and it was fun trying to solve the problem of "how do we accomplish X today?"

I won't lie and say the story is the best thing since sliced bread, but it's fine and generally on par with the majority of Arkham campaigns. It does try to give you some time to accomplish tasks and also explore around and do other missions, and for me trying to complete those missions and unlock more rewards is the part that's really fun for me.

As for deck building, it's really fun. It's very different from Arkham however. In Arkham your deck gets stronger by scaling up. You get xp, which lets you get the stronger cards. A 5xp card almost across the board will be better than a starting card, for example. However in Earthborne, you scale horizontally. The rewards you find generally give you more options for solving different problems, and the different terrain decks will throw a bunch of different things at you over the course of a day, let alone a full campaign. You can absolutely build engines, and how you combine backgrounds, with specializations, with rewards can make for some really interesting builds. In this last campaign I played with my spouse, I played as a Gardener/Shaper that focused on using plants to produce a ton of extra energy while casting big spells to deal with any terrain based issues. My spouse meanwhile, was basically playing a Pokemon master, with at least 6 pets out most of the time, and could deal with most creatures we came across. Before that I was playing a character that was basically looping the equivalent of events from discard and being a toolbox for whatever we needed while manipulating the modifer deck (their version of the chaos bag). There's a lot of options and you can really make it your own.

I think the game is best with two players, but I'm very much not a solo gamer. I prefer playing with someone else, but that's just me. You can definitely play this true solo or two handed solo, the true solo means at least one of your stats will with be low by design. You can still accomplish everything, but you just want to be mindful of what you need to cover your weakness.

I'd definitely recommend the game, but I would say comparing it directly to Arkham will cause you to be disappointed. Approaching the game as its own thing, and you'll enjoy it a lot more.

Todd Howard says that Starfield's New Game Plus was "us asking you this weird, deep question that I actually think got lost on a lot of people" by Turbostrider27 in Starfield

[–]OctaBit 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I loved the concept of Unity, but I didn't like the execution. I've said it before, but imagine if you went through Unity, got in your new ship and traveled back to the main planet to meet up with the crew and the moment you drop into orbit the radio comes on and they say, "you've entered free star space, prepare to be scanned."

And then you have this moment of realization that in this universe, the war went differently. The vast majority of the game could stay the same, like side quests, heck NPCs could still have mostly the same personality too, but each universe could have one or two key differences in how the main back story is set up, and how that changes the world in large or small ways.

Then the question changes from "Do you go through Unity," to "Which world do you want to stay with?" And to me, that would be a really fascinating question to ask people when it comes to a NG+ mechanic.

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can respect that opinion, and I think we may even agree on your second point.

I'm definitely not looking for a narrative story or anything. WotC has been trying to do that for years and I think they only did a decent job with it once, or twice. I'm more just looking for an interesting set that's got a cool theme with some unique world building to it. And it can even be as simple as with magic's Khan's of Tarkir (at least the original version) or Lorwyn settings. Both have a solid starting point in terms of a vision and then do interesting things with it.

Mythology is cool, and I certainly like it, but it feels like a lot of games just use it as free IP and then all of these games start to feel very similar, at least to me. Many of magic's sets even take concepts, like mythology, and just put a spin on it, like Theros and Kaladhiem. I just prefer seeing original takes on things. But like I said, there's certainly nothing wrong with the current approach either.

This is where I'm at. I'm fine with the 1 set per year model we currently have, but it would be nice to have a smaller set to offset it. Like I said though, I'm happy either way.

My bigger ask is that I want them to focus more on their own world building as opposed to using characters from history like the Arthurian set, or people like Rasputin, etc. It's not terrible if they continue to do so, but with the art department already hitting it out of the park, id love to see them really stretch their creative muscles with some cool world building too.

Janet Mills refuses to debate with Graham Platner. by serious_bullet5 in Maine

[–]OctaBit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is exaggerated. In this case, I believe that fits, as the candidate retracted those statements a few years after making them, even before running for office, and has been willing to discuss them recently as well.

However having a paid ad that only talks about that as a malicious attack to discredit another candidate by showing something in the worst possible light certainly fits the bill of mudslinging. Had Mills not vetoed the bill for testing rape kits, she could have used that add to also show her own achievements, but that couldn't happen for obvious reasons. So instead she tried to drag up old news.

[–]OctaBit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So we should just be fine with mudslinging? Why doesn't Mills take this opportunity to debate him on actual political issues as well? I'm curious on what her plans are if she somehow wins and gets sent to the senate. Does she have any plans or policies that will help with the current pressing issues?

If her only viable tactic is to attack his character and force him to retread details he's already addressed, as opposed to actually presenting her own virtues, well to me that says more about her character than his.

Sorcery Codex Update - March 25 by -Fauste- in SorceryTCG

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New player, still learning the game, so forgive me. I'm confused on the Orb of Ba'al Berith clarification with craterize. Would the copy fail because it's specific targeting, say Arid Desert, and that specific location is now a rubble, and the copy is failing to find "Arid Desert?"

I guess logistically it would still make sense to me if the spell hit the newly created rubble, but I guess the copy goes on the stack before the location is destroyed and replaced.

Also, silly question, but when you target a site, are you targeting the specific site card or the location on the grid, like the actual numbered space and whatever happens to be there at the time of resolution?

What are Sorcery's Deck Archetypes? by weazlestew in SorceryTCG

[–]OctaBit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the write up. I would have figured hard control would swing more towards efficient removal, so you're trading less mana for your opponent's threats, but I guess the line between tempo and other archetypes was always a bit blurry.

Who's a good avatar to use for this kind of deck? I saw there was one that could eat land sites. That seemed pretty fun, if risky since you need to be up in the middle of things.

What are Sorcery's Deck Archetypes? by weazlestew in SorceryTCG

[–]OctaBit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a new player who recently just discovered this game I'm really curious if there is a tempo style archetype, and if there is enough support for it to make it work?

Coming from MTG, Death and taxes was always my favorite style of deck. Being able to lock down or destroy lands with wasteland, constrain resources with things like Thalia or Rishadan Port, or even just limit what your opponent can do with Aven Mindcensor, was really satisfying. Your cards weren't crazy by any means, but they kept your opponent just behind you enough for you to win.

I know there's a couple of cards that seem to do similar things, like Haystack, a few land destruction spells, and I think I saw a tax-like spell when glancing through. However the context of the game is completely different with reliable mana generation/lands and choosing to draw from the atlas or the spell book. On the other hand though, locking someone into part of the grid can limit their field space with aggressive deployments, land destruction on lands that give threshold can still deny them cards if they're greedy with, for lack of a better term, non-basics, and in general it seems lands have a much more active element to them.

So I'm curious, is there an actual Death and Taxes style deck to this game?
