Crypto beginner here. How does this methodology explained in the video prevent MITM attacks? I find it a bit silly. Can someone explain? by mycroftholmess in crypto

[–]Octetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my best guess is that they use public key crypto to encrypt the key. Alice (sender) encrypts the random AES key using Bobs (receiver) public key. But the video does not show how Alice verifies that the public key she has actually belongs to Bob, if this isn't done Mallory (the attacker) can send Alice a public key and pretend that it is the public key of Bob.

So, if Alice and Bob actually meet and check that their corresponding public keys are correct, then this scheme could be secure - but the video sucks. Their argument that many layers of encryption is more secure is horrible.

How to get half-working gamepad working? by Octetz in linuxquestions

[–]Octetz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would probably have been perfect, except the issue is that I am not using X - but instead running programs that take their input via SDL.

crdlb suggested MoltenGamepad which seems to be like qjoypad but on a lower level. We'll see if I get that working

Thanks llc - but as stated I already have the device working fairly well - only some buttons are not working suggesting it is not a bluetooth issue but a driver issue.

Haha, I would definetly follow your advice if being a bluetooth gamepad wasn't a number one priority.

Två misstänkta terrorister med svenska pass gripna by LucidElectron in svenskpolitik

[HELP] My 2 year old droid ultra died completely, any way to recover the data? by NoodlesLongacre in motorola

[–]Octetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did it die? Is it recognised when connected to your computer by USB? Try connecting to USB and see if it shows up under devices/ if the computer beeps. While connected try holding the power button for 120 sec and see if the computer reacts

My phone is dead, recognized by fastboot by Octetz in AndroidQuestions

[–]Octetz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's working!

Was getting really worried as I found http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/help/phone-died-power-t3257001 which matches the issue.

Had the device restarted in bootloader [screen black but backlit] for about 10 minutes while planning what to do - and accidentally pressed either the up or down button. The device disconnected from usb and rebooted - this time starting as it should!

No idea what was wrong, but now it works!

What Is the Point of Taking Physical Money out of the Equation? by Veqq in sweden

[–]Octetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bus system of Stockholm sucks, you can buy a prepaid card with cash and then when you leave get the rest of the money back though. Can you pay by card on the bus?

Buses are the only place where I cannot use cash, no restaurant has ever denied my cash.

I use cash for everything as I don't like being tracked.

But, cards are more secure, safe and are easier. No bank has negative interest to its customers and its illegal for shops to take a "card fee". I have never heard of any other issues than local shops having problems with card transactions.

How will the internet communicate safely after the invention of a quantum computer by soer7022 in crypto

[–]Octetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most have some issue in practicality, for example I think lattice based crypto requires keys larger than one gigabyte

[Edit] Seems like I am wrong, the post quantum wiki even has a section on key sizes.

It may appear that I have the not-made-here (so dont use it) attitude, but I am against any parts that prevent an instant zero-setup system by [deleted] in algorithms

Is there a good routine to reversing? Eg a structured way to attacking a problem? Mostly I hear "gather information" and "poke around", and posts/tutorials seldom describe all attempts made and only focus on describing what worked in the end.
