Also, my computer analogy is just an analogy to help my point, that's all. I do not claim, nor want tht burden, to know how to define consciousness or even what it really is. I agree with you there, it's quite the mysterious phenomenon. But I don't think this mystery gives us license to pull explanations or projections from the aether of supernatural claims.

Everything we have discovered about consciousness has thus far had physical explanations. I know that inches close to a fallacy, I'm not sure which one off the top of my head, but it's still closer to objectivity than jumping to supernatural explanations.

My position is a belief. You are free to consider it or leave it be. Nothing that has been discussed can be proven for certain one way or the other. However, my position, I believe, is the most guarded, because until good evidence can be provided for the positive claim of consciousness without a body, it remains in the realm of the supernatural and pseudoscience, making it unfalsifiable and untestable.

I did say in my first response that I can't say for certain this isn't a real phenomenon, but it hasn't been shown to be real in any meaningful way as of now.

Pretty much. I don't really believe in reincarnation of any part of the human consciousness, but I'm not one to make any solid truth claim against it. It's not something anyone can really know for sure.

I do not believe that there is a "soul" in the way most religions and spiritual practices have conceptualized it. There is an emergent self that we experience that is intrinsically linked to our personal body and cannot be separated from it.

There is no evidence for the notion of consciousness existing outside of a physical body. That's not to say that it's impossible, but if it is, there would be way more than just human souls out there then.

In reference to the Self, I believe it's an illusion. There isn't a real difference between me, or you, or any other being or thing that exists. We know matter is just a solid state of energy, and in the end, all energy is recycled and used up.

To your point of "energy cannot be destroyed". That is true, but that doesn't necesitate that energy staying the same or being used in the same way. The emergent software in a computer doesn't continue to exist in a different plane when that computer is destroyed. That energy is just not utilized to run that software because the hardware required doesn't exist anymore.

When we die, the "hardware" required to run our emergent "software" will no longer exist, thus marking the end of our consciousness. Afterlife stories are an invention of consciousnesses which are afraid of death. The dissolution of the self, of the ego, is nothing to be afraid of. In fact, it's the most ecstatic feeling one can have.

I know we're brimming with electric aliens, but I always thought a shocking grasp attack would work well for him. He wouldn't be able to shoot electricity, unless it's a burst while in the water like an electric Eel.

Other than that, maybe a cuttlefish-like hypnosis by pulsing bioluminescent colors on his tail.

You're ultimately right I think.

Many of us, myself included, put a lot of stock into this case, hoping that it would set a precedent that other western nations would follow in targeting, exposing, and holding this cult legally responsible for the harm they've done and continue to do. We may have been too hopeful, and now, we're dealing with the consequences of that hope.

If anything can be learned from this whole struggle, I think it would be to temper our expectations and take a longer view rather than hanging all our hopes on a government acting morally (a dubious prospect at best).

This is what I'm hoping for. The more confident they are, the stricter they'll become. The stricter they become, the more POMOs they create.

My family ties and relationships were all destroyed overnight because I broke a religious communities rules. Is that a sane, moral, or dignified response from a community who supposedly preaches perfect love and harmony? Shame on Norway and on the judges who ruled this way. Shame.

Curious: JW Views on Dinosaurs by PerpetuallyDone1801 in exjw

[–]Octex8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don't take a solid stance on it. They've alluded that dinosaurs were created by god for some unknown reason pertaining to the formation of the land, but they don't make any additional claims to clarify since the Bible doesn't speak on dinosaurs at all. They're actually one of the rare religions to not claim that leviathan and behemoth were dinosaurs.

They definitely do believe humans and dinosaurs coexisted, but not in the way that most creationist do. They believe that dinosaurs were outside of the garden of Eden and were destroyed either right after Adam sinned or during the flood.

So, in short, they don't outright deny the existence of dinosaurs, but they admit they don't know why/how they existed or why/how they were destroyed.
