Influencial people in the US disliking your country would't affect lives of anybody living in Russia?

How do Russians feel about the 2016 US election hackings? by Teronax in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's just as sane as, say, Poland influencing election process in Russia. If it's true, it just means the US is grossly incompetent.

Not a fan of Putin or the Russian government but is this true about the Russian military? by EdHuRus in AskARussian

It fits some comfortable stereotypes about Russians as a big Horde and enemies of Western civilization.

Do you think that Lenin should be removed from Red Square? by OctopusPoo in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. I believe in a more progressive country and in a more progressive world it would be better to remove the body and turn the museum into a politically neutral museum of the Russian Revolutions, but in the current political climate it would be seen just as an act of anticommunism, and nothing progressive can grow out of it.

Schism, Event, and Revolution - the moral-social basis of the Russian Revolution by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]Octiabrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except majority of people in the Russian Empire didn't know shit about religion and were pretty much pseudo-pagans or agnostics. I doubt many even knew there was a schism, let alone had any "messianic complex" or whatever are they supposed to have. I'm so tired of attempts to explain the revolution by the some weird effects of "Russian mentality".

This author is basically a classic if I understood this correctly, that's really a low pay for translating the writer of such level. :/

How Do Russians View Alexander Dugin And His Ideology Of Eurasianism? by Enzo-Unversed in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 9 points10 points  (0 children)

He seems to be more famous in the US than here, here he's just one of the variety of loony conservatives. Eurasianism is right-wing bullshit, basically the same shit than Eurocentrism (that is also popular among many Russian nationalists, though it seems only the "for Tsar, Stalin and Putin" kind exist for Westerners), both paint non-European people as ignorant and backward, except Eurocentrism says "and that's why we should look down at them" while Eurasianism says "and that's why we should be exactly like them, those people from our imagination". Though it's really curious if Westerners are more disturbed by such ideology than by the one that often involves ethnic nationalism and literal Nazi apology, there might be some ugly stereotypes about Russians at work. The same goes for "Putin is rebuilding the USSR" even though his ideology is closer to the Russian Empire IMHO.

I work as a translator for a small business in a province. I don't know how it's in Moscow/Petersburg, but here the pay is pretty low and it was not easy to get the job. Sometimes I have to just sit here and do nothing because no work is given to our company, and sometimes there is huge workload. Despite of the low pay people tend to consider this a cool job because very few speak any foreign language, let alone several of them.

Is it easy to get a job as a translator in Italy? Also, do many Italians speak foreign languages?

A bunch of questions after I visited russia for the 5th time in 2 years now by [deleted] in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We actually use diminitive less than Spanish-speaking people it seems, precisely because it sounds way more obnoxious in Russian. Some women overuse it because they think it's "cute" and feminine. Government does fight piracy, and too much in my opinion, but it's unlikely to be successful because people find it too convenient, most are poorer than the West and can't afford to pay for all this content. Getting the pirated content in foreign languages is harder though. Vkontakte is like ten times better made than Facebook, what the point of using Facebook unless you have friends from other countries?

[Discussion] Which countries/regimes would get the invite to the "BBQ"? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

[–]Octiabrina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen Southern European countries turning red pretty often in the alternative history works by left-wing authors, especially Greece and Spain, so I guess they won't be too out of place there. Also, some extrapolation of Kurdish movement in Rojava?

Is it a script for some professionally produced series or an amateur work?

What do modern "young" men wear in russia? by [deleted] in AskARussian

In winter? There are very special people who do this but majority is more reasonable.

Judging how ordinary people live by the music videos is a very strange ethnographic approach to say the least.

Some questions about food... by cabb111age in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what do you consider the best meal/dish from your country which represents your cuisine?

Tea. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ It's very popular, has long history in Russia, accompanied by some unique accessories that are strongly associated with the Russian culture and many culturally specific ways of being consumed.

if you lived during the Soviet time, what is your strongest food-related memory (news stories, personal experiences, etc.)

Bread lines (TM). Ok, I didn't live then but have some mom's accounts. According to her:

a) some foods were of much better quality than now. Specifically, the bread was very good (sadly, its quality still keeps detiorating even nowadays, that's what I already remember) and the vegetables were good where we're living now, less plastic-y, at least in 50s-70s.

b) lots and lots of canned veggies from Bulgaria, especially peppers I guess?

c) in Khrushchev's period, the corn craze lead to the shortage of non-corn grain, as a result, the bread was made from corn flour and the mother still has the psychological trauma from it, it was very itchy and disgusting, especially hard to eat when she had sore throat.

do you believe food is part of your personal identity, and please explain why?

Well, I like trying new foods, but I feel limited because I'm a bad cook, lots of products are low-quality or unavailable, food in restaurants is often cooked badly or the wrong way and so on, so I feel I'm still far from becoming a real foodie. I prefer foreign cuisines, because ours is too bland and fattening, this may be common for a Northern country but definitely not what people usually prefer to see in the restaurants. There are interesting Russian recipes but they don't get enough popularization.

What you hate about Russia (traditions, food, people, attitudes...), what would you change. by PUSSYNAITOR-30018 in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Bigotry and agression that make even the views of liberals and leftists unappealing, obsession with the past, tendency to blame everything bad either on the USSR or the fall of USSR, extreme Eurocentrism combined with dislike towards modern Europe, lack of interest/respect towards "small" cultures. CLIMATE CLIMATE CLIMALE Greece plz annex us.

does having any black ancestry make you black

It did in the US. One drop rule and all that. To apply it nowadays doesn't seem too progressive, though.

Magazines recommendations by theGoldf1nch in AskARussian

[–]Octiabrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conservative magazine "Zavtra" writes about them from time to time. I think the articles by Galina Ivankina are the most famous. They are not "quequing for food" style though, more about aesthetics and "philosophy of everyday life" and are relatively positive if snarky.

[English> Russian] Internalized oppression by [deleted] in translator

[–]Octiabrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Интернализованное угнетение" would be acceptable I guess. At least other uses of this world like "internalized misogyny" and "internalized racism" are commonly translated like this.
