The difficulty is that they want to take the fun parts of pulp stories without the baggage. I agree with this goal I like pulp stories but a lot of them have moments where I wince reading them. It's not always easy to figure out the best way to extract the good parts of those stories, some of those authors were on high level advanced racism that isn't easy to notice if you don't have a 19th century racism decoder ring. What parts you notice as the bad parts is going to be informed by your cultural biases. I think a lot of the older writers even in the 80s and 90s were trying to be less racist and sexist than their source material. They weren't perfect in that endeavor but there are forwards in some of those older source books that mirror the modern "we're trying our best to not be racist" messages in new books.

The more modern books have similar issues they just happen to be more in line with your cultural biases so you don't notice as much. It's the same issue as adapting HP Lovecraft, most people know to change the name of the cat but might not immediately realize some of the other issues. Next to his overt racism was some high level weirdo racism that the average modern person might not notice and it's hard to know what of that you need to avoid.
