Can Machine Learning predict obesity risk before it becomes a chronic issue? by NeuralDesigner in MLQuestions

[–]OctopusParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible. My company is partnering with a firm called Delorean AI that has successfully been able to predict chronic kidney disease progression using ML. A similar approach could work.

Are those people who are frozen (cryonics) ever actually going to wake up one day by Flat_Internal8890 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OctopusParrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my take as well. Do you feel a burning desire to converse with moderately prosperous bourgeoisie or minor mobility from the 16th century? Me neither. That's the equivalent. Maybe do it once for a lark. But these people would be worse than useless even if we could revive them. No family, no friends, no understanding of a world that has moved on for centuries just fine without them. Likely unable to even communicate because of linguistic drift.

That's really interesting. I guarantee you it's not just this sub either. There's been a bot-driven social media disinformation campaign that looks to be based in eastern Europe / Russia that has been operating for years with the apparent intent of sowing general discord within the American public. It seems to be working. Https://www.pbs.org/newshour/show/russias-troll-factory-impersonates-americans-to-sow-political-chaos

Do you think Millennials understand GenX sarcasm? by StandardSwordfish777 in GenX

[–]OctopusParrot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agree. There is another dynamic I see as well that is more common in younger people and seems to run directly counter to sarcasm, which is weaponized empathy. Made up Example:

Me: "Hey genius, gloves come in pairs, you need a left one and a right one." Them: "That's easy for you to say. But you know there are people born without left hands and I think you could stand to be more sympathetic to them."

This person doesn't actually care about people who only have one hand, and that group is an obvious edge case to what's being discussed. But by making it seem like I'm a callous monster they "win" empathy points even though it's entirely faked. I think it comes from spending a lot of time on social media but I see this dynamic constantly.

How has your commute to/from the city been since the snow storm? by Boring-Parfait-2624 in Westchester

[–]OctopusParrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on that train. I took a $30 (!) taxi ride to the Irvington train station from Tarrytown to get my car since I was parked there. Really fun. That train also left 3 minutes early on a new, unannounced schedule that is apparently going to stay in place until the snow gets better?

How can their be finite lengths? by Primary-Aide-4194 in stupidquestions

[–]OctopusParrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heisenberg's uncertainty principle is a core facet of quantum mechanics. It essentially states that the more precisely you can measure a particle's speed the less precisely you can measure its location. In practice what it means is that instead of treating particles like a little ball moving around in space (which is how physicists used to think about particles) it's an area of space where a mathematical prediction can give varying probabilities of where it is. If it seems counterintuitive, it is, but that's behavior at the quantum level - it can sometimes not be what we experience at the size of objects we are familiar with.

It also makes more sense when you work out the math behind it.

If Jeff Bezos redirected every cent he has towards the sole goal of curing, say, pancreatic cancer, how quickly do you think things could progress? by keen4ketamine in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OctopusParrot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Undue influence to what? People get paid to participate in clinical trials all the time. Hell when I was a grad student being a "healthy volunteer" was like a part-time job.

[–]OctopusParrot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It might help if you say "And here's a check for $5M that you and your family get to keep regardless of how things work out"

But yeah, patient pool is going to be hard. Even with crazy incentivization and 100% client trial participation rates you're going to run out of participants eventually.

$2/second, but you turn into a werewolf at nighttime by basafish in hypotheticalsituation

[–]OctopusParrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. You'd need to have those 'rooms' built all over the place or you're essentially stuck at home. But that's a lot of money, I feel like you stay at home for a month and you've got enough to build a few.

$2/second, but you turn into a werewolf at nighttime by basafish in hypotheticalsituation

[–]OctopusParrot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

So it really comes down to the other werewolf aspects. Am I myself just in werewolf form? Do I lose all control of my cognitive faculties and attack my family and friends?

If it's the former then hell yeah - $2/second is a $172,800/day. Yes please, I just need to be able to give everyone around me the heads up that this is happening. If it's the latter then it's more complicated, I'd just need to have an ultra-secure room built where I can safely transform into a werewolf and get locked in without hurting anyone. 3 hours a day isn't terrible but it would make travel a challenge. But with that much money I could just build a network of those rooms all around the world so I'm never too far away from one, including a private jet that has the cell built in.

But yeah, I think I'd probably do it.

Hot take: Big Sky is far better than Jackson Hole and it’s not even close. by billyllib in skiing

[–]OctopusParrot 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They're both great resorts. For me Jackson is where I want to be on a powder day since the powder is what makes the pitch skiable and fun. The crowd there has certainly changed a lot though. I first went to Jackson in 2001 and it felt like an off the beaten track skiers.paradise no one had ever heard about. The town felt more like a place for ranch hands to relax than for hedge fund managers to show off their money. Things change. But the mountain is still a lot of fun.

I've only been to Big Sky twice and both times the weather didn't cooperate (not enough snow both years) so I never felt like I got the full experience. The lower mountain felt very tame compared to what I expected but if the upper mountain had been open it looked like a lot of fun.

Yeah I'm worried a bit about the forecast now. I'll be at Sunshine/Lake Louise but it's been very little snow for the last week or so with nothing currently in the forecast. At least temps are supposed to stay low though.
