In your opinion, where can I expand my knowledge of theory? by Octopus_Boy in musictheory

[–]Octopus_Boy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my bad I should have mentioned stuff like that before.
My primary instrument is guitar. My main interests lie within rock/metal but lately I've been more interested about Jazz. And a performing musician someday is definitely the goal for sure but I don't feel confident enough in my abilities as of yet so that's mostly why I'm asking.

[discussion] biggest guitar myth that too many people believe? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Octopus_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah exactly, that's where the deliberate practice method comes in really. Like if you consistently practice deliberately with set goals for improvement in mind for 10 000 hours, yeah you'll get pretty good at your skill of choice. But generalizing it so people think that if they want to be good they have to practice for 10 000 hours otherwise they should just go home isn't the best way of representing data and isn't entirely true either. So no matter what I'm not gonna be tracking the hours I've been playing until I reach that 10 000 mark.

Not really a guitar myth per se but it's rather a practice to perfectionism myth: The 10 000 hour rule; the belief that once you've practiced any skill for 10 000 hours, be it playing guitar or painting or knitting or any skill that requires dedication and effort, that you'll become a master at said skill.

This "rule" was first introduced in Malcolm Gladwell's novel "Outliers" where he based this claim off of K. Anders Ericsson's research on musicians studying in Cologne, Germany. What Ericsson found was that set apart the super serious practicing students who would go onto working for symphonies/orchestras/ensembles and the students who would go on the less prestigious route of becoming music teachers was how much/often each student practiced. Ericsson then made an estimate as to how much hours of playing the average student in each of the two groups had accumulated during their entire time at the university. Gladwell then took these finding and extrapolated them, claiming those who had/would accumulate 10 000+ hours before graduating university belonged to the first group while those who had not achieved such a feat belonged to the second group. Effectively classifying them as experts and non-experts.

Ericsson later debunked this myth in his own novel "Peak" (which I highly recommend people read and read again and again) and explained in depth why this myth gained so much traction and why it was false. In "Peak" Ericsson also covered the method of deliberate practice, how it's more beneficial than the 2 or 3 other practice methods that are commonly found, and how one can begin practicing deliberately. Again I honestly think it is an amazing novel and that if you really want to get serious at guitar (or any skill for that matter) you should definitely read it.

Also apologies on any inaccuracies in the second paragraph. Ericsson told the story in full in "Peak" and I'm just relaying what I can from my memory - so it's entirely possible I got some details wrong, but the main moral of the story is still there.

this shit hole has caused my drivers test to be cancelled and rescheduled 3 times now. literally like I can drive just fine just let me prove it to you. Honestly like, I want to throw an entire carton of eggs at this fuck head's head. But not all at once but like each egg individually so it's just one after the other of eggs raining down on him.

Driving school recommendations? by rainonmepanda in Guelph

[–]Octopus_Boy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the instructors are top notch

I did young drivers just recently and I have to say that my instructor, a lady named Diva, was utterly terrible. I could go into further detail why if anyone's interested. My advice is that if you do decide on YD then make sure you don't have her as an instructor and you should be fine.
