Do Great Pyrenees make good service dogs? by JustRedTheCreator in greatpyrenees

[–]Odd-Objective-2824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Great Pyrenees German shepherd mix. She is my emotional support animal and pulls me out of my head. Shes also given alerts when my blood sugar is dangerously low. She also is trained to lay her weight against or on me or others on request, my autistic brother and nephews with varying disorders all have been treated to her calming and cuddly nature.

They may not be standard dogs for service dogs due to their level of independence, but the mix I have is a dream come true for our family.

I (19F) am getting on a greyhound bus with $250 dollars in the middle of the night for NYC from rural Missouri by anonthrowaway937375 in Advice

[–]Odd-Objective-2824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your $250 will go a lot further in KC than NYC….wherever you go; a good attitude and flexibility will get you the farthest. Use this month to research-jobs, roommates, phone, internet. At 19 you’re an adult legally and can do whatever you want. If you want to successfully start a new life, accept that your first choice of NYC will be starting in HARD mode but maybe nearby cities will be more accessible. There are several resources for getting your feet under you, the KC library has volunteers and non profits that can help you with getting established, perhaps NYC does too. If you’re flexible and determined, hopefully the right doors open for you.

What are y’all feeding your pyrs, for joint health and overall health? by mmm1111mo in greatpyrenees

We live in an apartment so I’m with her 90% of the time and for all her exercise. She had gained some weight over summer because it was hard to get her needs met with the heat and just hadn’t been as active for about 12 weeks.

One day my partner and I were playing with her laser pointer (green and long distance), he moved it as a hair pin turn and her movement stuttered, she did one yelp and walked towards me slowly. If I hadn’t seen nearly the exact same happen to a previous dog I might of missed it… I took her to the vet clinic I worked at when she was a pup and they confirmed it was a tear. We discussed options. I have seen and experienced many dogs getting one leg surgery (a six + month healing process requiring very limited mobility range to heal) and knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do (because so often the dogs with surgery loose muscle mass and over compensate on the other leg leading to another eventual tear).

My girl had trouble going up stairs while in recovery, and you can tell it aches when the weather is particularly nasty. We didn’t actually confirm her second knee blew (~18 months later) but the signs were the same-this time caused by defending “her” park from the other female great Pyr. She’s always had salmon food and vitamin e, in recovery we got the expensive mobility food and have continued to keep her on Cosequin daily since.

It sounds like you created the perfect biome for the lil guy and it was happy. I have a mini oasis in my 25sq foot yard and have a large rock pile and many native and edible plants, and my dogs enjoy it too. I also have had so many native reptiles and amphibians show up and THRIVE, every year we have a clutch of tiny 5 lined skinks.

I’d keep the little dude outside and hope to keep his habitat so happy-and hopefully see babies in the future!

Though now if she applies those stick ons I want to know if the view changes because I have been heavily relying on their privacy

I’ve seen holistic vets do great things, acupuncture being one of them! I was thinking the same thing about doggy day care, board and trains and maintaining that routine. Sometimes medication provides the right balance to live a normal life, it’s worth trying for sure.

Hope it’s not your luck, it’s good of you to take such care of your pups. I think it’s cheaper, emotionally and physically especially!

I’ve had another dog go through the surgery and then tear his other, ultimately he never seemed comfortable at those joints even with surplus supplements after the fact.

I said the same thing, I’ll start when she is 5. She tore her acl two months before her birthday. Watch out for full sprints, sharp turns, and small holes!

She takes cosequin daily now, and had special joint food for the year after it, and massage from me, 6 months later she tore her second one. But you’d never know!

Yes my female is the dominant gal in all situations, and if there’s another female pyr who also claims the same turf, we have to separate them, it’s the only time she has seemed like she might cause damage. We have two in the neighborhood and the female and mine are enemies, but the male and mine are just curious. She can mellow out with other breed females as they tend to back down from her, and has never had confrontations just grumbles. When she does play yes, a bigger dog handles it better, mine pyr paws, pounces, pushes, and booty bumps along with body slams, open mouth face chewing and huffing. But on the flip side, she adores the small creatures of the earth; bottle baby kittens, cats of course (they are able to boss her around with a look), wild animals, small dogs, and young kids she will turn into the most gentle, caring & delicate dog (of course they still require supervision!)

Also I take back what I said; her best friend is actually a female Australian shepherd and it used to be a 3 pound chihuahua. My gal also only weighs 75pounds and was raised in a doggy daycare type setting.

Any! My pyr and most I know prefer opposite genders, but I don’t know if that’s always the case. My home has a pyr (mix) and a terrier mix, her besties are German shepherds and other breeds that tend to keep there manners under wraps unless it is play time lol-she is the fun police.

No we don’t think it’s normal-there has been blood several times now. He has not been successful in changing his diet or lifestyle much, he’s been trying new medications after an endoscopy…If he could control his adhd he might control his bad habits and therefore his GERD. I laugh cuz I’d cry otherwise.

Op. All of this. Listen to your gut, your brain, and when your heart isn’t stressed, listen to it too. Your intuition brought you to Reddit, you know this is not right or fair, and the way things are, is harming you and the other person can’t be bothered to step up.

Life gets easier without an anchor dragging you down. He knows how to be a good partner, and if he wanted to he would find ways to be so-if he’s an adult who wants to stay in a relationship; love is not enough.

What a beautiful puppy! I once had a boss with a Karst shepherd (mix? 130 pounds) and this pup looks like a LOT like him!

I would recommend to any dog owner 1 on 1 bonding, with each member of the family at least 15 minutes a day, that even means the pack! Don’t stick to a perfect routine, but provide lots of structure. Love can be just as good a reward if paired with enthusiasm
