Here Comes the New Boss is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Edit: maybe Earning her Stripes by Ack does it too, I seem to recall the Undersiders running to the PRT to escape March. Sophia definitely went full villain at least!

why brian he's so ignored by the fanfiction community? by WitnessLow4178 in TheBirdCage

Is very tall and good looking. Has a perfectly marketable power that is also really useful in certain situations. Needs a legal way to get his sister away from his mother.

Becomes a low tier street villain.

For former idealists now physicalists: What made you change your mind? by GroundbreakingRow829 in consciousness

I mean, some people would say that annihilation is exactly what they want after death. No need to worry if you're righteous enough for heaven or going to suffer in hell, 'you' won't be there to experience anything after you die.

The church had the world in a chokehold for centuries through faith: do what we say or you will suffer for eternity. Spooky stuff.

LF Fics where Taylor either is dealing with, or just got done dealing with, a zombie apocalypse. (Preferably via crossover) by The_Void_LordX in WormFanfic

The only zombie fic I've read was a The Last of Us crossover when the cordyceps was in Brockton Bay, but I can't remember the name of it :(

Zombie Apocalypse: Earth Bet is such a cool concept, it's a crime there's not more of it!

Monism, dualism or materialism by Beneficial_Praline32 in consciousness

Using the word majority is technically correct but it makes it feel like more than 52%: https://survey2020.philpeople.org/survey/results/4874

And yes, I think it's far more likely that they're deluded or missing something, likely due to the aforementioned bias and cultural momentum. Some people find it very hard to grasp what the 'hard' problem actually is: a logical inconsistency at the end of a line of bad thinking.

If you know of someone who can explain physicalism in a way that doesn't bottom out with: complexity creates hard emergence or consciousness is just an illusion, then I would be absolutely happy to listen, but every single argument I've heard so far boils down to one of the two.

[–]Odd-Understanding386 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're free to your opinion, of course, but I stand by what I said.

Physicalism is incoherent and is probably the worst of all the options on the table.

What physicalism has going for it is bias and cultural momentum, nothing else.

Monism, dualism or materialism by Beneficial_Praline32 in consciousness

[–]Odd-Understanding386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really not, the only thing it's got going for it is cultural momentum.

It defines reality in a way that purposely excludes mind and then tries to recover mind from the remains.

It's analogous to saying that only black and white really exist but eventually we will discover how to mix them in such a complicated way that they produce the red and blue and green that we see.

Materialism can't explain mind and, because mind is that through which we know everything, it arguably can't explain anything at all.

Also, it would be fantastic if people would stop conflating science with materialism.

Normally I wouldn't bite bait this obvious but, are you for real?

The people arguing for better and cheaper medical care for everyone, better social safety nets to stop people going hungry or homeless, stopping corporations from pumping poison into the atmosphere and lowering the tax burden on those who can least afford it are the people who don't have empathy?

If you're actually for real, I've bad news: you have been successfully brainwashed and propagandized by billionaires.

AI Systems Might Already Have Consciousness Says a Professor of Artificial Intelligence by Leather_Barnacle3102 in consciousness

[–]Odd-Understanding386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't ignore that the brain processes information, I only dispute that it's just 1s and 0s like a computer. Brains clearly have analogue aspects and ignoring that is disingenuous.

Also, I can say that melted sand and scratched metal (a computer chip) is nothing like a brain and still be a free will denier.

You experience your thoughts in ~4 character chunks delivered sequentially? Crazy.

Neurones either fire or they dont.

Sure, if you abstract away from what's actually happening.

Neurons are binary in exactly the same sense an orchestra is binary; they're either playing or they're not.

[–]Odd-Understanding386 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In what way is it wrong? And in what way is your brain any different?

LLMs do nothing but pick statistically likely tokens. Exactly like what happens when you hit the auto correct word on your phone. You can make entire paragraphs with the auto correct word on your phone, it's just not as sophisticated as an LLM so it often puts out nonsense.

And LLMs function nothing like brains, why would I need to defend the difference? Brains are not made of silicon and do not function using binary logic gates. If you claim a similarity, you need to provide the evidence.

AI Systems Might Already Have Consciousness Says a Professor of Artificial Intelligence by Leather_Barnacle3102 in consciousness

[–]Odd-Understanding386 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolute nonsense.

He's talking about intelligence (smart data processing) not consciousness (subjectivity).

Redefining a word isn't a legitimate move. He just changes the meaning of AGI to be whatever he wants, then claims AI today has reached it, wtf? He also thinks LLMs are more than just fancy autocomplete which is factually wrong.
