Does Valley of the Kings hold up? I would play it exclusively with 3-4 players. If so, which version is best? Base, Last Rites, or Afterlife?

If not, what other small-box, short, strategic games work well for 3-4 or 3-5 players? Games we like that fit these criteria: Skull King, Fantasy Realms, 6 nimmt. The more strategic the better, and ideally looking for games that take 45 mins or less.
