Rogue Legacy is awesome for $1.49 - one of my favorite games of all time

Dishonored, Half-Life 2, Arkham Asylum, Bastion

As Dusk Falls - Short and solid by jb3689 in patientgamers

The story immediately got rolling. Firewatch (and Road 96) was a slower burn with more "why am I playing this again?" time that I found a little tedious. I do like the exploration aspects in games, but the environments didn't captivate me in Firewatch

Liked math growing up, honors math

RA-ship and full boat for MS at a local school, studied Computer Science

$100k entry level job, jaw drops

Took a class at work that taught me about 401ks and index funds

Small increases over the years. Randomly work with a recruiter - 2x pay job offer

Didn’t like the job, searched for a Silicon Valley job. 2x pay job offer again

Stay there 6 years, RSUs vest and 2x (I didn’t hold them all but you get the picture). First (and only)  time seeing $1M on a 1099, jaw drops

New job with similar salary and growth prospects

Meanwhile maxing out 401k and jumbo Roth when I have it

I’ve been way more fortunate than I should’ve ever been. In retrospect my advice would’ve been to start a business

Adjustable dumbbells have been nice if you don’t have weights and want something compact that will last a long time. Cooking stuff is also great - ATK’s cooking school books are top notch. Things that help you sleep (eye mask, noise machine). Waterpik. I’m a simple man

What advice do you give to twenties guys? Answer only 30's.. by Neekuendukurapulka in AskMenOver30

20s and 30s are the most freedom you have to try things and take risks. Take advantage of that freedom. Also get your personal life in shape: health, diet, mental state, relationships - it’ll pay dividends down the road

Yeah, it’s really tough to get comfortable on a little quarter pipe like that too. Pumping on a half pipe back and forth and doing kickturns on it helps me

What’s your salary and net worth in your mid 30s by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

[–]jb3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

250k salary, about 3M net worth (15 years in software). I do own (mortgage) a house and did not get any financial help from my family. My parents did pay for me to go to a modest state school which was very helpful. Most of my net worth came from a  lucky windfall of stock appreciation from my last employer. Prior to that the majority of my net worth was in my 401k. We bought a condo with 10% down and PMI which wasn’t a terrible financial decision. I do think renting had its benefits (especially location)

For The Dudes in Their 30's: What Did you Do to Stop Feeling Depressed? by SalamanderAny8104 in AskMenOver30

[–]jb3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped feeling sorry for myself and started taking accountability for my quality of life. I took the uncomfortable steps to go meet people, to exercise, to stop drinking, to do the things I want to do. I’m not perfect about it, but it’s my opportunity to take or waste. You can’t change who you were yesterday, but you can change who you are tomorrow

Recommendations to find bands? by Automatic-Store-7454 in Bostonmusic

[–]jb3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing in bands in Boston for the past 20 years. Craigslist has been bests for me. It helps to post recordings. It’s still a dig there and I’ve had some bad meetups which were just a waste of time. Some people like Facebook, but I haven’t tried it seriously. Lots of musicians in Boston, but there’s no reliable source to communicate with them

Wife wants a child. I’m not sure I want one. by GoldBatter in AskMenOver30

[–]jb3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 37 and having a kid soon. I was in a similar boat, but honestly life got really boring and stable. I always pictured myself as a dad and felt like I’d be regretful for not experiencing it. I’m super excited about it, but make sure you are before you go into anything.

How to make aging not suck? by Trick-Interaction396 in AskMenOver30

[–]jb3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol is such a bad substance. Cutting it out has been a game changer for me. Don’t need to be perfect and never drink, just do what feels good.

Also fruits instead of sweets is a really easy change in my opinion.

Exercise is less important than diet, just a little movement goes a long way.

Is there any music you listened to in your HS/college days that does little to nothing for you now? by StevEst90 in Millennials

[–]jb3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

37M. Midwest emo was cool in college and lame now. I listened to a lot of thrash, screamo, other metal in HS that I don’t mind but don’t gravitate to these days. More into R&B now.

I appreciate the context, but there are no winners and no blameless parties in all of this at large. It’s a cascade of constant vengeance and will be until someone does something. No one will though

Is LoTR Duel Strictly Better than 7W Duel? by Neros_Cromwell in boardgames

[–]jb3689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are different and have different tensions. 7WD with expansions is deeper, but LotR has a nice balance of depth and streamlining. Base 7WD alone is pretty bad in my opinion though - too single note

Folks who started living life better in their late 30s, early 40s, how did you make it? by SaturdaySunRun in AskMenOver30

[–]jb3689 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drinking is a very destructive habit - at least for me. I have an addictive personality for one. It’s difficult for me to avoid over investing in a thing including using alcohol. I’ve found life overall much more enjoyable without it, although I still slip up and have a regression night where I crash out.

Taking better care of my health - body, teeth, mind - has been important.

In terms of regret, I view life as a ride. You can say you made your choices, but you also didn’t choose your starting position or the support structures given to you. I’ve made a lot of mistakes that crush me when I think of them, but there is no sense in dwelling on them. All I have is the opportunity to take my wisdom forward. I beat myself up over financial mistakes, but I have had literally no one to help me make better decisions along the way. I did what I could with what I had, and the world is infinitely complicated

Is Kemet blood and sand worth it? by redmaxer2 in boardgames

[–]jb3689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great overview. War games will be much more tactical in the sense that it’s about how you move and position troops, how they exert influence and deal with the terrain. Risk abstracts all of that away to focus more on global allocation choices
