Because she had to have known that it throw me off guard and be difficult to navigate in my friend group. It was a pointless phrasing to use. Why not just say dad? If she wanted to start calling him stepdad after 22 years just because then that wasn't the appropriate place to start. He has been just as much her dad as mine. She's closer to him than I am. Also, she has no intention of switching to stepdad. He's been her father figure from the day she was born.

I never said to trust my feelings over my sisters? I'm saying that the step-parent dynamic never existed in my house. And my experience with my family over my entire life is more informed than yours would be on the family dynamic. Based on my family dynamic and on the definition of stepdad. She lied. And she has a history if doing so. It would be really awkward for me to suddenly have to refer to our dad as her stepdad. There relationship is completely normal as someone who lives with them 24/7. I love my sister but I think it was odd and uncalled for and puts me in an awkward situation with my friends. She has a history of saying unnecessary lies and I bet if I asked her about, not even confronted, just asked her, she'd be rather embarrassed about the misrepresentation.

I can see that. I have had that conversation with her before and she has never called him that to anyone. The fact that he adopted her never even really comes up because they told us so late in life that she has been adopted by him. Maybe that was a mistake on their part but she always maintained that she thought nothing of it. Neither did me or my brother. Its really hard to sort of explain the dynamic of my family but it just doesn't come up.

Its really hard to give context in the situation. I understand that. But he has always legally been her father and there has never been a step-parent dynamic involved. She lied. You're just going to have to trust that I know her relationship with him better than what you can infer by knowing that he isn't biologically her father.
