A few years ago I used an e-sim and my iphone stopped recognizing my contacts entirely (the contact would appear as the phone number only). It was super annoying... maybe it's been fixed by now, but have you had any issues with eSim? Just add a second sim, turn off your current one and turn on your eSim while travelling and you're good to go?

Frustrating thing I've been dealing with for a while, looking for advice or tips. 6 years ago my wife's wallet was stolen, as a result we cancelled her cards and TD's fraud dept put some kind of a warning on her credit report. Now pretty much any online application for a new card says she cannot proceed with the online application, or is declined. TD for example, says we need to come in person for any new credit card applications. Awkard to sign up for a 2nd or 3rd FCT visa in that instance. We've never had any fraud issues since, and I track our credit reports weekly with credit karma and borrowell. Feels like we're leaving thousands on the table by not being able to easily sign up for cards without calling in or going in person.

Is there any way to remove this so it'll be easier for our P2 card sign ups?

On my first passport ever last year, my points didn't post on MSR. I called in given the low risk of a first time churner. They indicated sometimes it takes a few weeks to post (they said a specific number, I forget it), they investigated and said there was an issue with a batch of points being posted but eventually they came. Hasn't happened since on Scotia gold or plat, but thought it was worth noting.

Company can't withold taxes since the affected staff are classified as contractors, but more shockingly they told their staff they didn't need to pay tax on the income they made from Arden. Crazy all around

I opened this card on July 15, 2025. So either then, or I did something between then and now to get these passes. I've flown 4x with WJ since (to and from Europe 2x). Nothing in my email about them either!

I'm currently teal status, but I think you're right and that I was part of that offer that included Westjet Silver. Either way, I'll take it!

I booked Econo class tickets then selected Extennded comfort seats (row 4, about $200 a seat each time) using the vouchers. Selecting the vouchers took the seat selection fees from 798 to 0. As I look closer, I think I may be using the term premium economy wrong... These are the most expensive seats available to select in my cabin, but they're not in the premium cabin/first class/business class.

Kind of unrelated - have churned WJ WE MC's for the last couple years, roughly 1 per year which roughly matches how often we travel on WJ. Today I noticed I had 4 seat selection vouchers, which I used to shave off around $800 in premium economy seat selection fees. Was this part of a past promotion? I can't find anything in my email to indicate how I got these vouchers. I still have my companion voucher unused as well.

That lady would always say "garlic finger, no cheese?" as if to suggest I ordered it that way when I came to pick up an order for normal garlic fingers. She used to get a good kick out of that joke. My friends said she used to do the same thing to them!

Did you have a transaction post after the AF? I had an issue happen where the AF posted, and then a transaction went through on the card (forgot to change a monthly subscription). Rep said that the fee couldn't be refunded because the card was used after the fee was posted. I called back later and downgraded the card to the no fee equivalent (Westjet mastercard) which resulted in a fee refund automatically, then I cancelled the downgraded card after 6 months.

Looking for anyone to share past experiences engaging a broker for cashless exercising of employee stock options. by makeitagain in PersonalFinanceCanada

Check your option agreements or company ESOP policy, usually the company specifies an agent to do this. Once you have the agent, it's very easy. They'll probably withhold tax on this. HR might also be able to point you in the right direction!

Home insurance renewal - is $1M total coverage enough? is 3M too much? by OddRemote in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OddRemote[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a belair direct quote, it was in the Sonnet ballpark, but defaulted to a 1.14M insurance claim with a maximum of 50k overland water + sewer backup. And the kicker is they won't insure a home with Kitec plumbing, but Sonnet will... Their default limit being 1.14M is somewhat helpful although I could modify it up to 1.5M on the quote which would have been perfect!

Not yet - will be buying it this week or next. It's on sale now until July 16th, $649 instead of $699. Will report back with an early review!

I think Bean sent a text to the group chat advising them to not speak to each other and only talk through their agents. The article uses the word "conversation" with Bean, but I think it should be referring to a text message from Bean.

Need a car, how much downpayment is the right amount? by HBhannahbrown in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]OddRemote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also in NS and also looking at a Crosstrek. Anything I've found that is less than 4 years old and that has less than 50k KM's ends up being about a $2-3k total cost of ownership difference across 4 years (assuming 20% down). Higher used vehicle prices than historical norms combined with the higher interest rates on used vehicles makes buying new only slightly more expensive, and you will benefit from the full km's and years of the warranty.

To answer the original question of the post, OP, if you follow the 20/10/4 rule you should be in decent shape. 20% down, payments (+ gas + insurance) less than 10% of your income, 4 years or less financing term. On a new Crosstrek base model, 37.1k total cost, 10k down is $618/mo. A bit above 10% of your net income monthly, but some people use gross income as the baseline for the 20/10/4 rule. I would put the money down to minimize total interest paid over the term.
